The overarching goals of this study are to introduce engineering concepts to middle school students through digital fabrication, and increase science competency while stimulating interest in STEM careers. This pilot study incorporates digital fabrication, engineering design, and visualizations into a comprehensive unit that integrates hardware, software, curricula, and a collaborative space. The engaging nature of these activities may improve student attitudes toward STEM disciplines and increase the likelihood that students will take advanced STEM coursework and choose STEM careers, as they feel the success of completing hands-on activities supported by visualizations in content that might otherwise be overwhelming. Fabrication activities are a vehicle that may help deliver science content about electricity in a group setting that is approachable for students who may be less likely to pursue STEM activities. Three eighth-grade classes (n=57) participated in hands-on science lessons that incorporate technology to deepen their understanding about electricity using modeling, simulations, and measurement probes. The researcher triangulated data, including student interviews, analysis of student work samples, pre-/post tests, and the STEM Semantics Survey. Data may help provide practical ways to enhance interest and skills necessary to encourage participation in STEM activities, courses, and careers. This paper focuses on student attitudes, as measured by the STEM Semantics Survey. The paired samples t-test failed to reveal a statistically significant difference between the mean overall pretest and overall posttest totals.

Agent-based modelling of human crowds has now become an important and active research field, with a wide range of applications such as military training, evacuation analysis and digital game. One of the significant and challenging tasks in agent-based crowd modelling is the design of decision rules for agents, so as to reproduce desired emergent phenomena behaviors. The common approach in agent-based crowd modelling is to design decision rules empirically based on model developer's experiences and domain specific knowledge. In this paper, an evolutionary framework is proposed to automatically extract decision rules for agent-based crowd models, so as to reproduce an objective crowd behavior. To automate the rule extraction process, the problem of finding optimal decision rules from objective crowd behaviors is formulated as a symbolic regression problem. An evolutionary framework based on gene expression programming is developed to solve the problem. The proposed algorithm is tested using crowd evacuation simulations in three scenarios with differing complexity. Our results demonstrate the feasibility of the approach and shows that our algorithm is able to find decision rules for agents, which in turn can generate the prescribed macro-scale dynamics.

In this paper, a novel approach to determine the small signal model of an LLC resonant converter is presented. The proposed model uses analysis techniques from communications theory to determine the control-to-output transfer function required for the design of a digital compensation network. The model considers the effects of higher order harmonics and sideband frequencies generated by the variable switching frequency control method, as well as the effects of the LLC resonant tank and the output voltage rectifier. Experimental data from a prototype LLC resonant converter was obtained to verify the analytical results, and revealed that the proposed model is an accurate representation of the prototype converter dynamics. Simulation results demonstrated that a digital compensator design based on the proposed model was able to achieve output voltage regulation.

human performance modeling (HPM) can be used to explain and predict human behaviors under certain situations, helping designers in the design stage through evaluating the interface, procedure, staffing, etc. This study discusses the feasibility of introducing HPM methods into digital nuclear power industry through 1) the new characteristics of human- system interaction/human performance in digital main control rooms (MCRs) of nuclear power plants (NPPs), 2) the simulating abilities of available HPMs on their latest progress. Based on the review of the two issues, we conclude that: 1) digitalization of NPPs changes operators' performance through the system, task, environment and human himself. 2) HPM is classified as human reliability modeling and cognitive modeling. The lack of performance data could be an obstacle for applying human reliability modeling in digital MCRs. The unclear underlying mechanism of human-system interaction in digital MCRs constrains the introducing of cognitive modeling. © 2013 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

Lessons learned from case studies have had a significant impact on both education and practice of engineering and related disciplines. The history of practice in many engineering disciplines is, in large part, the story of failures, both imminent and actual, and ensuing changes to designs, standards and procedures made as the result of timely interventions or forensic analyses. In addition to technical issues, professional and ethical responsibilities are highlighted by the relevant cases. Pilot studies had assessed the use of failure case studies in civil engineering and engineering mechanics courses at Cleveland State University under an earlier NSF sponsored project. Over the past few years, the project has extended the work of implementing and assessing case studies from Cleveland State University to other university partners, and has broadened the scope to cover other engineering disciplines, as well as the NSF Materials digital Library. This paper reports the results of case studies in various courses at a diverse data set from seven universities. The results strongly suggest that failure case studies support a subset of ABET outcomes that may be referred to as the "Professional Component" of the curriculum. The Professional Component outcomes include understanding of professional and ethical responsibilities, understanding the impact of engineering solutions, life-long learning, and knowledge of contemporary issues.

Now-a-days, it is a very common trend for youth to go for regular gymnasium for muscular body building or eliminating extra fat. Most of the equipments used for these purposes are generally for indoor exercises. Thus there is least scope of rigorous outdoor exercise in open air environment. An attempt has been made by the present authors to develop a concept model of Ergometer which is to be installed in open space like park. After a small user survey and brain storming, it was decided that the intended design should be unique in look;aesthetically appealing;compatible for both adult Indian male and female;easy to use and most interestingly, it would be motivational factor for people to continue their exercise for longer duration. People would feel happy because more battery (inbuilt) recharging would happen if they go for intense and longer duration exercise. Those batteries would be used in night for illuminating the park. Innovative concept model of the Ergometer was evaluated and subsequently, design was modified by providing more human-centric inputs (various adjustable features for anthropometric compatibility;easy reach towards handle, clearance dimensions, inputs for riding comfort etc.) through proactive virtual ergonomics techniques using digital human modeling and simulation. © 2013 IEEE.

Awkward postures represent one of the major ergonomic risk factors that cause work-related musculoskeletal disorders among hydraulic excavator operators. Awkward postures subject operators to discomfort in the neck, shoulders, and back, due to the inherent nature of the job, especially bending to improve visibility, maintaining eye contact with below ground-level work, and control locations. This work presents the design, analysis and results obtained from an ergonomic study - using the digital human modeling tool, Jack® - to investigate the effect of using a heads-up display concept in the cab to improve work visibility and reduce physical workload due to awkward postures in the operation of a hydraulic excavator.

The objective of space habitat design is to minimize mass and system size while providing adequate space for all necessary equipment and a functional layout that supports crew health and productivity. Unfortunately, development and evaluation of interior layouts is often ignored during conceptual design because of the subjectivity and long times required using current evaluation methods (e.g., human-in-the-loop mockup tests and in-depth CAD evaluations). Early, more objective assessment could prevent expensive design changes that may increase vehicle mass and compromise functionality. This paper describes a new interior design evaluation method to enable early, structured consideration of habitat interior layouts. This interior layout evaluation method features a comprehensive list of quantifiable habitat layout evaluation criteria, automatic methods to measure these criteria from a geometry model, and application of systems engineering tools and numerical methods to construct a multi-objective value function measuring the overall habitat layout performance. In addition to a detailed description of this method, a C++/OpenGL software tool which has been developed to implement this method is also discussed. This tool leverages geometry modeling coupled with collision detection techniques to identify favorable layouts subject to multiple constraints and objectives (e.g., minimize mass, maximize contiguous habitable volume, maximize task performance, and minimize crew safety risks). Finally, a few habitat layout evaluation examples are described to demonstrate the effectiveness of this method and tool to influence habitat design.

The deep understanding of human-rifle interaction is not only crucial to improve the rifle firing accuracy, but also important for rifle design. In this paper, the construction of a biological coupling human-rifle model for standing posture was created using *** and ***. Firstly, the rifle model was built by virtual prototyping technology based on the software of ***. Secondly, the human model was generated in *** on the database of human dimensions of Chinese adults. Finally, the simulation of human-rifle system was performed by the model, in which the interface between the human model and the rifle model was modeled using corresponding constraints. The feasibility of the application of biology mechanics model of three-dimensional digital human body to the researches of human-rifle system was explored, and it can provide the basis for the researches of human-rifle interaction and dynamic response of human-rifle system. © (2013) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.
