In this paper, we introduce the Warehouse Augmented Reality Program (WARP), its functionality, practicality, and potential use cases in education. We build this application on the backbone of WebXR. Using this application programming interface (API), we create an interactive web tool that displays a life-sized warehouse in augmented reality (AR) in front of users that can be viewed on a smartphone or a tablet. AR is a technology that displays virtual objects in the real world on a digital device's screen, allowing users to interact with virtual objects and locations while moving about a real-world environment. This tool can enhance warehousing education by making it immersive and more interactive. In addition, the tool can make warehousing operations more efficient and warehouse design less costly. We highlight how our tool can be applicable and beneficial to education and industry. We demonstrate how this tool can be integrated into a problem-based learning (PBL) assignment about warehouse layout design and order picking. The PBL activity involves comparing two different warehouse layouts (fishbone and traditional) by completing a set of order picking tasks in AR warehouse environments. The task is to perform single item picking over thirty orders and comparing the average order picking time per layout. Then, we use the results of these human subject experiments for validating the realism of the warehouse layouts generated by the tool by comparing the empirical completion times with the analytical results from the literature. We also administer a system usability scale (SUS) survey and collect feedback from industry experts. © American Society for engineering Education, 2024.

Industry 5.0 emphasizes human-centric approaches in technological advancement, particularly crucial in healthcare applications such as prosthetics development. While individual technologies like additive manufacturing, machine learning, digital twins, and tissue engineering have shown promise in prosthetics innovation, their integration remains a significant challenge. This paper presents a novel multidisciplinary framework developed through the National Centre for High-Performance Computing (CN-HPC) project, which addresses the gap between individual technological capabilities and their coordinated application in personalized prosthetics development. The framework, implemented through collaboration between six research groups from two universities, employs the House of Quality methodology to align technological integration with patient needs. Our approach encompasses a comprehensive seven-step process, from initial patient requirements definition through virtual modeling, production process optimization, virtual sensing, machine learning enhancement, digital twin simulation, to advanced tissue engineering. A data model facilitates seamless information exchange between different technological domains and research groups. This research contributes to the field by providing a scalable, human-centered framework for technology integration in medical device development, potentially extending beyond prosthetics to other healthcare applications. The proposed framework represents a significant step toward realizing the full potential of Industry 5.0 in healthcare manufacturing through the systematic integration of advanced technologies for delivering personalized prosthetic solutions. © 2024 The Authors. Course content plays a critical role in student success. Among all college students, students with disabilities (SWD) face numerous additional challenges when digital content is inaccessible or difficult to use. digital note-taking has been increasingly implemented and studied in higher education for its potential to further develop universal design for learning (UDL) techniques to benefit all students, especially SWD. This study combines low-stakes assessment results with surveys about accessibility, belongingness, self-efficacy and perceived learning in connection to the use of digital notes. The multi-discipline, multi-site, and multi-timepoint research design includes two junior-level undergraduate probability and statistics courses in the disciplines of Computer Science and Industrial engineering at the University of Illinois Urbana Champaign (UIUC). The study investigated the effect of digital notes introduced at week 10, produced using ClassTranscribe developed at UIUC. The digital notes allow for transcripts, screenshots, and mathematical equations taken directly from video recordings. The digital notes were provided to the students of the two classes in *** *** formats with included links to the video. Additionally, we considered Students With Accessibility Needs (SWAN) if they reported conditions that prevented them from attending class at some point while not having an officially recognized disability by the university. The students in the classes were surveyed three times: a baseline survey followed by two posttest surveys. The baseline survey was conducted early in the Fall 2022 semester by measuring the students' perceived accessibility of the course using the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG)-based POUR model in the context of mathematically-rich engineering courses. The rapid evolution of artificial intelligence, big data, and generative AI models has ushered in significant transformations across various sectors, including education. digital human Technique, an innovative technology grounded in advanced computer science and artificial intelligence, is reshaping educational paradigms by enabling virtual humans to simulate human behavior, express emotions, and interact with users. This paper explores the application of digital human Technique in education reform, focusing on creating immersive, intelligent classroom experiences that foster meaningful interactions between teachers and students. We define digital human Technique and delve into its key technical components such as character modeling and rendering, natural language processing, computer vision, and augmented reality technologies. Our methodology involves analyzing the role of educational digital humans created through these technologies, assessing their impact on educational processes, and examining various application scenarios in educational reform. Results indicate that digital human Technique significantly enhances the learning experience by enabling personalized teaching, increasing engagement, and fostering emotional connections. Educational digital humans serve as virtual teachers, interactive learning aids, and facilitators of emotional interaction, effectively addressing the challenges of traditional educational methods. They also promote a deeper understanding of complex concepts through simulated environments and interactive digital content. © 2024 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

In line with the emerging Industry 5.0 paradigm's human-centricity characteristic, manual assembly has long been an indispensable element of small-batch and customized products. However, the complex assembly information brings a huge cognition burden for the worker, which restricts the development of the human-centric assembly. To take advantage of the valuable model-based definition (MBD) information in the intelligent manufacturing environment for cognition assistance, an MBD-enabled digital twin modeling method is studied. Firstly, the MBD information is divided into five layers to describe the information according to the assembly process. Based on the assembly layer information of the MBD model, an MBD-digital twin (MBD-DT) model framework is established to illustrate the connection between the MBD model and the digital twin assembly. The MBD-DT modeling problem is solved by an optimization method for assembly model mapping. Finally, the cognition needs in the manual assembly process are analyzed, and the cognition assistance method using the MBD-DT model is discussed. The research of this paper can be applied to digital manufacturing enterprises, extending MBD resources from the design end to the on-site assembly end, providing real-time assistance for manual assembly, and achieving sustainability in human-centric smart assembly, which meets the core value of Industry 5.0. © 2023 IEEE.

With the increasing adoption of the digital Twin concept in the construction industry in the operations and maintenance phase, researchers and practitioners are increasingly seeking suitable technological solutions for the design and construction phases. While it is widely accepted that the required platforms hosting the digital twin must be cloud-based to fulfill the requirements of ubiquitous accessibility and centralized consistency, questions regarding the need for data schema remain. Some academics argue that a structure-free organization of data is suitable for realizing digital twins and the data streams from and to the respective platform. Hands-on experience in the BIM2TWIN project supports a counter argument, i.e., that structure-free data is insufficient for most use cases around AEC digital Twins. The sheer information complexity of construction projects requires well-defined data structures enabling unambiguous and error-less interpretation. This becomes apparent when reflecting on the well-established concept of the data-information-knowledge pyramid describing that raw data must be processed into understandable and meaningful high-level information for human decision makers, subsequently providing the basis for cross-project domain knowledge. Based on this observation, we highlight that object-oriented modeling is a widely recognized information modeling technique that facilitates the structuring of complex domain information. We compare it with ontology-based model concepts that provide a similar, yet more abstract means for information modeling. © 2024, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

As intelligent vehicle technologies advance, autonomous service applications like retail vehicles are disrupting traditional service modes. However, effectively coordinating these emerging technologies in service systems design and optimization faces challenges due to unpredictable customer behaviors and demands. This paper explores the potential of parallel service theories to address the complexity of blending automation and human factors. We present a case study applying a parallel service approach to optimize an autonomous retail vehicle service system. By implementing a human-in-the-loop strategy, we focus on modeling customer preference to guide vehicle routing. Simulation experiments demonstrate improved delivery times compared to a basic nearest-neighbor policy. Despite limitations like simplified customer models, our preliminary results suggest parallel services hold promise for managing future hybrid human-machine service systems. © 2023 IEEE.

The presence of moisture in the insulation system is detrimental to the performance of power transformers. Traditional solid insulation drying process in the transformer industry uses empirical recipes to ensure low levels of moisture but often require long cycle times firstly because active parts with the heaviest and thickest insulation assemblies, which are the hardest to dry, must be covered by the recipes, and secondly because no practical moisture sensor exists that can monitor moisture along all the stages of the process. In addition, process data and operating history are usually recorded by hand which is prone to human errors and difficult to analyze. Optimization of the drying process can be achieved through the Internet of Things, Data Analytics, and other emerging technologies. As an example of the evolution of transformer manufacturing practices, this paper describes a method for monitoring the drying process of solid insulation considering Internet of Things and analyzing the data aiming to optimize cycle times ensuring low moisture levels. The devised architecture, the software design, as well as the Internet of Things based monitoring system are presented following the main requirements of the power transformer manufacturing industry. © 2024 IEEE.

Effective manpower planning is crucial for any organization, including universities, as it directly influences performance, productivity, and overall success. Inefficient recruitment processes can lead to increased costs, higher turnover rates, and suboptimal utilization of human resources, negatively impacting the institution's ability to achieve its goals and maintain a competitive advantage. The objective of this study is to develop a comprehensive digital solution to streamline and enhance recruitment and manpower planning processes, replacing traditional manual methods. This paper presents the Recruitment and Manpower Planning System, an innovative web-based platform designed using Extreme Programming (XP) methodologies. The system integrates modern programming tools such as Visual Studio Code, Laragon, Laravel 9, and MySQL, and utilizes Unified Modelling Language (UML) for precise system design. A mixed-methods approach, incorporating quantitative data from structured questionnaires administered to 500 users, informed the system's design. Data analysis indicates a 40% reduction in recruitment time, a 35% increase in successful job placements, and a 90% user satisfaction rate. Rigorous testing phases ensured system accuracy and quality. This digital solution not only optimizes recruitment processes but also provides a robust prototype for future advancements in manpower planning systems. © 2024 IEEE.
