This paper discusses ongoing collaboration between engineering and industrial design at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC). The aim of this collaboration is to promote better understanding in engineering students of the kind of broad human-centered design thinking employed by industrial designers. At the freshman engineering level, industrial design content has been included in an engineering design graphics course, GE 101. This content includes lectures from a member of the industrial design faculty and, in the lab portion of the course students participate in industrial design activities including identifying design opportunities, brainstorming and other ideation strategies. At the advanced level we offer GE 402/ARTD 445, Computer-Aided Product Realization. engineering students enroll in GE 402, while industrial design students take ARTD 445. The two linked courses meet at the same time, but normally in separate locations. Owing to a distance of more than a mile separating the two locations, the participants prefer to meet separately whenever possible. Video conferencing equipment at both locations is used to link the classes. In the first half of the course students become familiar with digital prototyping tools, both software and hardware. In the second half of the semester students work in multidisciplinary teams on a product design project. The project deliverable is a digital prototype of the product. Most engineering students are familiar with the parametric modeling software, Autodesk Inventor. On the industrial design side, students are familiar with SolidWorks, a comparable solid modeling software produced by Dassault and commonly used by industrial designers in practice. The first part of the course involves them quickly converting to Inventor so that all are using a common platform in the design project. In this work, we consider the problem of modeling the dynamic structure of human activities in the attributes space. A video sequence is first represented in a semantic feature space, where each feature encodes the probability of occurrence of an activity attribute at a given time. A generative model, denoted the binary dynamic system (BDS), is proposed to learn both the distribution and dynamics of different activities in this space. The BDS is a non-linear dynamic system, which extends both the binary principal component analysis (PCA) and classical linear dynamic systems (LDS), by combining binary observation variables with a hidden Gauss-Markov state process. In this way, it integrates the representation power of semantic modeling with the ability of dynamic systems to capture the temporal structure of time-varying processes. An algorithm for learning BDS parameters, inspired by a popular LDS learning method from dynamic textures, is proposed. A similarity measure between BDSs, which generalizes the Binet-Cauchy kernel for LDS, is then introduced and used to design activity classifiers. The proposed method is shown to outperform similar classifiers derived from the kernel dynamic system (KDS) and state-of-the-art approaches for dynamics-based or attribute-based action recognition.

In recent time's digital microfluidics have gained much attention as an emerging technology that provides automation in fluid handling within a miniaturized substrate. Compared to traditional bench-top procedures, microfluidic biochips offer the advantages of low sample and reagent consumption, less likelihood of error due to minimal human intervention, high throughput, and high sensitivity. With the increase in number of bioassays for concurrent operation to be mapped in a single digital microfluidic platform needs for design automation as well as testing and fault diagnosis techniques become highly relevant for better accuracy in results and efficiency in operation. In spite of individual and independent control of electrodes -a new droplet manipulation method based on a “cross-referencing” mode that uses “row” and “columns” to access electrodes has recently come into use. The cross referencing technology largely scales down the control pin number on chip, which not only brings down manufacturing cost but also enables larger number of bioassay integration on a single biochip platform. However, the cross-referencing scheme due to severe electrode interference and other defects can result in faulty operations which in turn cause erroneous results or complete malfunction of the device. In this paper we tried to identify specific types of faults that may occur in cross referencing biochips and developed techniques for detection and location of such faults with the objective of (i) optimum resource utilization and (ii) minimum consumption of time. Testing simulation has been carried out with different size of 2D grids and with different number of test droplets and the corresponding results are found to be encouraging.

Nowadays it is very important that technical people make use and apply available technologies and methodologies to their field of work. In the engineering field there are many computer-based tools that can have a significant positive impact on the manner that several processes and procedures are currently performed, thus making them more efficient and effective. And as educators, it is important to expose students to these technologies, and it is important to motivate their use during their time on campus. One such technology in the area of Computer-Aided engineering (CAE) is parametric solid modeling, and one such field would be the field of biomechanics. Parametric solid modeling was initially implemented in a commercial CAD software more than 25 years ago, and right from the start it was identified as a technique that - properly applied - would result in a positive impact in various phases of the engineering design process. Biomechanics as well can be considered a relatively new field in engineering, dealing with the application of engineering mechanics to study anatomical and functional aspects of biological systems. In the biomechanics field we have spine biomechanics and orthopedics, which deal with studying musculoskeletal systems. Students were exposed to these two areas, parametric solid modeling and biomechanics, in the context of a design Senior Project. One of the most critical problems that doctors and researchers encounter is the lack of effective tools to study, in this case, the human spine. The typical approach is to perform studies with cadaver spines, or with some highly-regulated in-vivo studies on animals. Both alternatives have benefits but they have many limitations as well, thus the need for other tools that will help in their studies. Hardware Description Language and Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) have revolutionized the way digital Logic design is taught and implemented. Traditional ways of teaching logic design using discrete components (TTL: Transistor-Transistor Logic and CMOS: Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductors) have been replaced by Programmable Logic Devices (CPLD: Complex Programmable Logic Devices and FPGA). Today, a more standard development process is widely used in industry. The process uses Hardware Description Languages as a design entry to describe the digital systems. The two most widely used Hardware Description Languages in industry are VHDL (Very High Speed Integrated Circuit Hardware Description Language) and Verilog (Verifying Logic). Although most traditional electrical and computer engineering programs have updated their curriculum to include topics in hardware description language and programmable logic design (FPGA/CPLD), two-year and four-year electrical engineering technology programs have fallen behind and are moving slowly in updating their curriculum. To effectively meet the next generation's workforce needs, the electrical and computer engineering technology curriculum must be current, relevant, and teach technology that is widely used in industry. To meet this goal, this paper propose a curriculum development project designed to meet the needs of both community college and university-based two-and four-year technology programs that will develop new courses in logic design and hardware modeling using VHDL and Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) Logic design to teach students marketable logic design skills. Curriculum development will include the development of hands-on re-configurable computing labs both at the university and the community college, we will be able to provide students at universities and community colleges with state-of-the-art training tools that match the expectations of industry. Internet chat-based tutorials are being developed for integrating computer modeling and design and mathematics skills into mechanical engineering undergraduate and middle school outreach programs. In modeling and design projects, tutorials help students navigate complicated software interfaces while teaching fundamental concepts through dynamic dialogues between tutorial agents and student user groups. In a typical assignment, students are asked to perform a design or modeling task that includes the use of software such as a commercial finite element code or specially designed educational software. Students work in teams, but team members are distributed within a room or between remote sites, linked by a text interface. As students collaborate electronically, an intelligent agent monitors their interactions and interjects questions or comments in response to the use of key phrases, or due to other triggers. This platform is also being adapted to the collaborative teaching of mathematics skills in engineering applications. In all projects, agent-monitored tutorials are being used to help automate collaborative learning experiences and to study how students can effectively interact with each other and with the software agents. In undergraduate projects, fundamental knowledge and intuition in interpreting results are emphasized. In outreach efforts, participants are led to consider how their work relates to the broad mechanical engineering profession.

Our bodies shape our experience of the world, and our bodies influence what we design. How important are the physical differences between people? Can we model the physiological differences and use the models to adapt and personalize designs, user interfaces and artifacts? Within many disciplines digital human Models and Standard Observer Models are widely used and have proven to be very useful for modeling users and simulating humans. In this paper, we create personalized digital human models of perception (Individual Observer Models), particularly focused on how humans see. Individual Observer Models capture how our bodies shape our perceptions. Individual Observer Models are useful for adapting and personalizing user interfaces and artifacts to suit individual users' bodies and perceptions. We introduce and demonstrate an Individual Observer Model of human eyesight, which we use to simulate 3600 biologically valid human eyes. An evaluation of the simulated eyes finds that they see eye charts the same as humans. Also demonstrated is the Individual Observer Model successfully making predictions about how easy or hard it is to see visual information and visual designs. The ability to predict and adapt visual information to maximize how effective it is is an important problem in visual design and analytics.

This paper firstly introduces the frame system of digital city and the process of 3D city modeling, and discusses the method of CSG modeling of buildings. This method extracts CSG primitives according to building features, then makes geometric transformation and regular Boolean operation on these primitives to form 3D model of buildings. The process of modeling and inner topological relationship of buildings can be represented by this method.

Established at NASA Glenn Research Center (GRC) in 2006 to meet the need for rapid mission analysis and multi-disciplinary systems design for in-space and human missions, the Collaborative modeling for Parametric Assessment of Space Systems (COMPASS) team is a multidisciplinary, concurrent engineering group whose primary purpose is to perform integrated systems analysis, but it is also capable of designing any system that involves one or more of the disciplines present in the team. The authors were involved in the development of the COMPASS team and its design process, and are continuously making refinements and enhancements. The team was unofficially started in the early 2000's as part of the distributed team known as Team JIMO (Jupiter Icy Moons Orbiter) in support of the multi-center collaborative JIMO spacecraft design during Project Prometheus. This paper documents the origins of a concurrent mission and systems design team at GRC and how it evolved into the COMPASS team, including defining the process, gathering the team and tools, building the facility, and performing studies.
