digital human Models are used extensively in virtual manufacturing to evaluate hand clearance and reach. Spatial assessments of accommodation are typically conducted using digital human models representative of the manufacturing population. Unfortunately, these models are often based on anthropometry gathered from sources that are not representative of the actual target worker population. For example, the size and shape might be based on data from the U.S. military, which differs ***, age, and race distributions from the typical automotive manufacturing population. Ford ergonomists traced errors in accommodation predictions to these inaccurate representations. Using a recently developed statistical methodology incorporating principal components analysis, the anthropometry of the target worker population was synthesized. Using these new data, Ford updated the anthropometry of their digital human models to reflect changes due to secular trends in the U.S. The models also consider the diversity in age and race, thus producing Ford manikins that better represent the variability in their worker base. The improved ability to accurately predict accommodation allows for significant immediate and long-term reductions in engineering costs. Copyright © 2009 SAE International.

The objective of this study was to examine to what extent ergonomics simulations of manual assembly tasks correctly predict the real outcomes in automotive assembly plants, and if recommended measures originating from ergonomics simulations are considered. 155 ergonomics simulation cases done by nine simulation engineers at Volvo Car Corporation in Gothenburg were used in the study. The evaluations of the ergonomics conditions in reality of the cases were done by six professional ergonomists working in the company. The results show that digital human modelling tools are useful for providing designs for standing and unconstrained working postures as well as for the design of various auxiliary devices and their needed space for movements. The study also identifies areas that require additional development in order to improve the digital human modelling tools' ability to correctly predict a work task's real outcome. Moreover, a better feedback of product and process changes, and a more careful order description to the simulation engineers, would improve simulation results in current and future projects. digital Signal Processing (DSP) is a course offered by many Electrical and Computer engineering (ECE) programs. In our school we offer a senior-level, first-year graduate course with both lecture and laboratory sections. Our experience has shown that some students consider the subject matter to be too theoretical, relying heavily on mathematical concepts and abstraction. There are several visible applications of DSP including: cellular communication systems, digital image processing and biomedical signal processing. Authors have incorporated many examples utilizing software packages including MATLAB/MATHCAD in the course and also used classroom demonstrations to help students visualize some difficult (but important) concepts such as digital filters and their design, various signal transformations, convolution, difference equations modeling, signals/systems classifications and power spectral estimation as well as optimal filters. In our institution the laboratory section was offered mainly as a software (SW) environment (mostly working with matlab/simulink.) However since Spring 2008 semester, a hardware (HW) component has been added to the laboratory where students work with Texas Instruments TMS 3206713 DSP boards in addition to using software packages in implementing some of the DSP algorithms in both hardware and software. In addition, the software programming environment of LabVIEW is being considered as another tool to be utilized in the laboratory section. Our introductory classes introduce students to software tools and this advanced sequence of lecture/laboratory sections allows students to apply their knowledge of available tools to an important application area within the electrical/computer engineering discipline. This paper describes an effective integrated method for estimation of subject-specific mass, inertia tensor, and center of mass of individual body segments of a digital avatar for use with physics-based digital human modeling simulation environment. One of the main goals of digital human modeling and simulation environments is that a user should be able to change the avatar (from male to female to a child) at any given time. The user should also be able to change the various link dimensions, like lengths of upper and lower arms, lengths of upper and lower legs, etc. These customizations in digital avatar's geometry change the kinematic and dynamic properties of various segments of its body. Hence, the mass and center of mass/inertia data of the segments must be updated before simulating physics-based realistic motions. Most of the current methods use mass and inertia properties calculated from a set of regression equations based on average of some population. In this paper, we calculate avatar-specific mass and inertia properties from the scans of digital human. The mesh of the digital human model is split using equations defined by a plane at each joint. The equation is used to split up the geometry. The resultant geometry is closed to make the mesh hole free. Mass, center of mass (assuming uniform density) and inertia tensor are then calculated using the method described in the paper (Mirtich 1996). The method can be used in all physics-based digital human modeling and simulation software where the scan of the avatar is available. The use of mass inertia properties calculated by this method enables users to customize digital avatar and simulate motions for specifically for that avatar. Copyright © 2009 SAE International.

Virtual manufacturing technology has become an effective method for decision and planning in manufacturing. Due to ergonomics problems are widely concerned in assembly design planning, a human-centered virtual assembly system framework is proposed for ergonomics analysis for assembly operation in this paper. The six-layer framework integrates virtual human modeling, motion capture and recognition, ergonomics evaluation and virtual assembly process planning as an organic whole. Data exchanging and system function are discussed based on this framework. The work in virtual reality (VR) technology, motion capture technology, ergonomics method and optimization method for implementing the system is also described. The framework would provide a new approach for the combination of virtual manufacturing and ergonomics analysis in the future.

Integrating the seemingly divergent objectives of aircraft seat configuration is a difficult task. Aircraft manufacturers look to design seats to maximize customer satisfaction and in-flight safety, but these objectives can conflict with the profit motive of airline companies. In order to boost revenue by increasing the number of passengers per aircraft, airline companies may increase seat height and decrease seat pitch. This results in disaccommodation of a greater percentage of the passenger population and is a reason for rising customer dissatisfaction. This paper describes an effort to bridge this gap by incorporating digital human models, layout optimization, and a profit-maximizing constraint into the aircraft seat design problem. A simplified aircraft seat design experiment is conceptualized and its results are extrapolated to an airline passenger population. The dependence of passengers' comfort ratings on seat height and seat pitch are analyzed, with the aim being to study how to maximize the design's profitability while not compromising comfort. This is a specific example of a general problem: modeling the design space of multi-objective problems involving designing for human variability. These multiple and often conflicting objectives can exist purely within the design (e.g., minimizing weight while maximizing strength) or can involve higher-level targets such as satisfying customers, passing regulatory requirements, and achieving profits (unfortunately these are not always congruent). Introduction to engineering design (EI-100) is a first-semester 3 credit required course for every engineering program of Universidad de las Americas Puebla (UDLAP). Course content and classroom activities are divided into three, two-hour sessions (modeling, Concepts, and Laboratory) per week. Students have six different El-100 facilitators (an instructor and teaching assistant for each session). UDLAP's engineering students have in EI-100 a great opportunity for a multidisciplinary collaborative experience. EI-100 is a team-taught course that uses active, collaborative and cooperative learning, which has been a major player in UDLAP's efforts of engineering education reform since 2001. However, EI-100 could be improved taking into account technological advances and recent research on human learning and cognitive processes that underlie expert performances. The How People Learn (HPL) framework was used to redesign EI-100 to further promote an interactive classroom while integrating multiple formative assessments by means of Tablet PC technologies. The VaNTH Observation System (VOS) is an assessment tool developed to capture qualitative and quantitative classroom observation data from teaching and learning experiences of the bioengineering classroom. VOS is a four-part system that incorporates the elements of HPL framework and uses four recurring methods of collecting classroom data: recording student-teacher interactions, recording student academic engagement, recording narrative notes of classroom events, and rating specific indicators of effective teaching. VOS was used to systematically assess HPL framework implementation in EI-100 classrooms. Observers measured differences in classroom experiences resulting from the innovations and redesigned learning environments. This Paper introduces a research method and exemplary test results used to define operator's predispositions that are carried out by Department of Avionics and Control, Faculty of Mechanical engineering and Aeronautics, Rzeszow University of Technology. Researches carried out under laboratory conditions define candidates predispositions to perform pilot profession and are one of the recruitment process elements for pilot specialty. Tests are carried out with the use of specialized informatics tool, that enable the evaluation of operator's predispositions and is not sensitive to candidate gender, race and origin culture. This paper presents and analyzes the results obtained during the researches conducted in the period from 2006 to 2008. An important part of the work is a proposal of a simplified informatics model of pilot. This model considers, in the operator's predispositions evaluation process, those elements of particular importance to perform pilot profession. Copyright © 2009 SAE International.

The retrieval of digital evidence responsive to discovery requests in civil litigation, known in the United States as "e-discovery," presents several important and understudied conditions and challenges. Among the most important of these are (i) that the definition of responsiveness that governs the search effort can be learned and made explicit through effective interaction with the responding party, (ii) that the governing definition of responsiveness is generally complex, deriving both from considerations of subject-matter relevance and from considerations of litigation strategy, and (iii) that the result of the search effort is a set (rather than a ranked list) of documents, and sometimes a quite large set, that is turned over to the requesting party and that the responding party certifies to be an accurate and complete response to the request. This paper describes the design of an "Interactive Task" for the Text Retrieval conference's Legal Track that had the evaluation of the effectiveness of e-discovery applications at the "responsive review" task as its goal. Notable features of the 2008 Interactive Task were high-fidelity human-system task modeling, authority control for the definition of "responsiveness," and relatively deep sampling for estimation of type 1 and type 2 errors (expressed as "precision" and "recall"). The paper presents a critical assessment of the strengths and weaknesses of the evaluation design from the perspectives of reliability, reusability, and cost-benefit tradeoffs.

This paper describes a novel model-based controller designed to simulate human motion in dynamic virtual environments. The controller was tested on SantosTM, the digital human developed at the Virtual Soldier Research Program at the University of Iowa. A planar 3-degrees-of-freedom model of the human arm was used to test the hypothesis. The controller was used to predict on line, optimal torques required to move the end effector towards a target point. The control law was implemented using classical gradient-based optimization and the recently developed technique of model predictive control (MPC). An advantage of MPC is that it replaces intractable closed loop optimization problems with more easily implementable open loop problems. The controller was used to produce physically consistent simulations of the motion of a human arm in a virtual environment in the presence of external disturbances that were not known in advance.
