The present paper describes the construction of a multimodal database, referred to as the PROMETHEUS database, which contains recordings from heterogeneous sensors. The main purpose of this database is the development of a framework for monitoring and interpretation of human behavior in unrestricted environments of both indoor and outdoor type. It contains single-person and multi-person scenarios, but also covers scenarios with interactions between groups of people. It is devoted to detection of typical and atypical events, while care has been to taken for the recordings to be as close to real-world conditions as possible. The uniqueness of the PROMETHEUS database comes not only from the unique sensor sets but is due primarily to its generic design, which allows for embracing a wide range of real-world applications (including smart-home and human-robot interaction interfaces, indoors/outdoors public areas surveillance etc).

Clothes fitting simulation is of great importance in assisting online fashion shopping. Recently, human mannequin and clothes simulations have improved to the point that they can generate realistic animation of clothes in real-time. However, under the constraints of online technologies, e.g. server calculation and download speed, this function is only available with larger online retailers. With the consideration of a low cost system installation and limited Internet download speeds, an experimental online toolkit development was undertaken. It consisted of creating and adjusting the digital human model, digitalising clothes data and virtually fitting clothes. Finally, the whole process was integrated into an online fashion shop.

With the explosive development of wireless communication technology, more and more implanted medical devices appear in everyday life. Because of the limited energy resource in implanted devices, the energy-quality wireless system design is the biggest challenge. In this paper, we update our former system level energy model and make it suitable for implantable medical communication system. In the new model, the impacts of human body tissue on the signal transmission are considered. The wireless system energy consumption is minimized by adjusting the digital base-band and RF parameters such as signal bandwidth, peak-to-average ratio (PAR), modulation levels, data rates etc. In the communication quality evaluation, we consider the effects of 1/f noise and the third-order harmonic distortion in addition to normal channel noise.

In the current world, by and large, computer interaction relies on visual and auditory feedback and to make interactions more realistic, tactile response would be essential e.g. for medical training simulations. Haptic interfaces would make the digital models to be probed and felt by the users and more specifically in a medical world by medical students, these simulations, also can reduce costs and provide experience with a greater variety of pathologies, and enable the trainee to repeat training procedures over and over without the need for a cadaver. The system being developed as part of this research program will enable it to be used in conjunction with a simple surgical simulation which will have both visual and tactile feedback. The simulation allows users to not only see an on-screen computer application, but to actually 'feel' it by touching and manipulating virtual objects.

The reconstruction of accurate freeform surface models of 3D scanned objects is a common task encountered in creating virtual reality environments for anatomical reconstruction, cartography, cultural artifact modeling, digital archaeology, infrastructure renewal, and computer-aided design. Difficulties occur in reconstructing smooth surfaces from these scanned data sets because the acquired data is very large and is often infiltrated with scanning errors. For surface reconstruction, visualization, and interactive virtual modeling, it is necessary to reduce the amount of raw scanned data. Many existing data simplification techniques are complex and not directly applicable to spline-based surface models. A novel two stage contour-based data simplification algorithm is introduced in this paper and applied to facial surface reconstruction, which may be used for human modeling for computer games or model creation for virtual museums. The first stage extracts a series of equally spaced sectioned contours directly from a dense 3D data points. In the second stage, each extracted contour is redefined as a cubic B-spline curve by reduced number of control points defined by a user defined reduction ratio. A lofted surface is finally created from these reconstructed contours. The effectiveness of the synthetic surface reconstruction algorithm is demonstrated using its deviation values from its original point cloud data set. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm generates a fairly accurate spline based facial model with only 5-20% of the actual scanned data, based upon the surface complexity. Performance can be improved by increasing the number of extracted contours, followed by a greater reduction ratio in the second data simplification stage.

The retrieval of digital evidence responsive to discovery requests in civil litigation, known in the United States as ¿e-discovery,¿ presents several important and understudied conditions and challenges. Among the most important of these are (i) that the definition of responsiveness that governs the search effort can be learned and made explicit through effective interaction with the responding party, (ii) that the governing definition of responsiveness is generally complex, deriving both from considerations of subject-matter relevance and from considerations of litigation strategy, and (iii) that the result of the search effort is a set (rather than a ranked list) of documents, and sometimes a quite large set, that is turned over to the requesting party and that the responding party certifies to be an accurate and complete response to the request. This paper describes the design of an ¿interactive task¿ for the text retrieval conference's legal track that had the evaluation of the effectiveness of e-discovery applications at the ¿responsive review¿ task as its goal. Notable features of the 2008 interactive task were high-fidelity human-system task modeling, authority control for the definition of ¿responsiveness,¿ and relatively deep sampling for estimation of type 1 and type 2 errors (expressed as ¿precision¿ and ¿recall¿). The paper presents a critical assessment of the strengths and weaknesses of the evaluation design from the perspectives of reliability, reusability, and cost-benefit tradeoffs.

This paper presents a novel rapid product manufacturing technique that will reduce cost and compress time for delivery of products produced in batches. The technique is composed of four stages - digital prototype, computer aided engineering analysis, physical prototype and rapid tooling manufacturing system. The technique effectively integrates the contemporary advanced manufacturing technologies such as solid modeling, CAE, reverse engineering, rapid prototyping and rapid tooling in improving the product design, analysis, prototype, mould and production process. Example of products developed through this technique is also reported in the paper. The initial findings prove the potential of the technique in reducing the time and cost of product development and manufacturing in the quantity or batch production environment. This technique is experimented through the senior design project and proved highly effective in presenting opportunities for students in applying various state of the art product manufacturing technologies that they have learnt in their engineering technology curriculum. © American Society for engineering Education, 2008.

During the 2006-2007 academic year, a team of faculty from the Kate Gleason College of engineering developed a proposal for a pair of Master's programs (a Master of Science program and a Master of engineering proposal) in the field of Sustainable engineering. Sustainable engineering has been described as "engineering for human development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs" [3]. Both programs are multidisciplinary in nature and include coursework from the disciplines of Industrial and Systems engineering, Mechanical engineering, Civil engineering Technology, and Public Policy. The programs offer students the flexibility to develop 'tracks' in their program of study which would permit deeper immersion in domains such as renewable energy systems, systems modeling and analysis, product design, etc. Student interest in the programs has been very favorable. This paper describes the context at RIT from which the idea for these programs arose, the program development process that was followed, and the structure of the two programs. © American Society for engineering Education, 2008.

As part of a laboratory intensive curriculum, Mechanical engineering students at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo are required to take a senior level class in Mechanical Control Systems. In addition to three one-hour lectures, students attend a weekly three hour laboratory session where course concepts are reinforced through hands-on modeling and experimentation. This paper describes a newly implemented and innovative laboratory experience which is centered on a hydraulic position control system. Often experiments in Mechanical Controls are heavily influenced by non-linearities such as friction or backlash which cause inexperienced students to lose confidence in linear system modeling as an effective analysis and design tool. A hydraulic system was chosen for this laboratory due to excellent correlation between experimental results and the linear modeling techniques taught in the course. This laboratory experience is designed to integrate linear system modeling techniques, experimentation and data collection, control system design, and design verification through physical testing using a variety of hardware and software tools. The main objectives of the laboratory are to give the students practice and confidence in advanced control system modeling, experience with precision hydraulic positioning systems, practice in designing Proportional-Integral (PI) controllers, exposure to digital control systems and experience and physical understanding of the sometimes dramatic condition of instability. The methodology includes a unique procedure that uses root locus concepts and asks the students to drive the system to instability to determine system parameters. The paper describes the laboratory experience in detail and gives some example results and an assessment of student learning. © American Society for engineering Education, 2008.

This paper describes a novel methodology for development of real-time control design and implementation of an enhanced bang-bang controller with particular emphasis on student use in a laboratory environment. The students designed and implemented their controller using a dSPACE DS1104 digital signal processor (DSP)-based data acquisition control (DAC) system, and MATLAB/Simulink environment. The controller is implemented in real-time, using the position control of a brushless drive system as a testbed. Experimental results show that the improved bang-bang controller produces adequate control performance, particularly in handling nonlinearities and external disturbances. The real-time design of the controller is integrated with previously taken lectures in linear control systems course offered every spring semester. The paper also presents a hardware platform used during the course. © American Society for engineering Education, 2008.
