Semiotics is the study of human use of signs and symbols, and humanspsila reaction to the interpretation of signs employed in communication and coordination. These elements of semiotics can be further expanded into four basic component modules; perceptual, epistemic (E), deontic (D) and axiological (A), originally based around a set of social norms. In this paper, we describe an organisational semiotic approach to designing intelligent agents and stakeholder negotiation based on these main components and a proof of concept in MASBO (multi-agent system for building control); a multi-agent system designed to provide co-ordinated management on building control HVAC systems within an intelligent building and CDE (collaborative design environment); a platform for stakeholders to negotiate their environmental specification.

So far, design and deployment of microelectronic, implantable devices has largely had a strongly ldquoad-hocrdquo character. The majority of existing devices has been custom-tailored to the specific application in mind, in an effort to abide by strict design constraints on safety as well as power and size. However, an enabling technology and the fact that implants are gradually becoming mainstream market products calls for a more structured design approach. Towards that end, in this paper we present ImpBench, a novel benchmark suite meant for designing and evaluating new digital processors for microelectronic implants. In an application field as wide as the various pathoses of the human body, we have conceptualized this suite based on common-sense and market-driven indicators, and we have established its usefulness and uniqueness based on extensive experimental measurement. The suite consists of eight carefully selected programs, chosen on the basis of popularity among contemporary and emerging implant applications. MiBench being the closest to our application field, that is embedded systems, has been used for a detailed comparative study. Since implants are required to perform control-, processing- or I/O-intensive tasks, various benchmark characteristics have been studied, namely: performance (IPC), cache and branch-prediction behavior, instruction distribution and power consumption. Results display significant variation from existing benchmarks to justify the need for and usefulness of ImpBench.

In this paper, a simple digital control scheme for the parallel module converter is proposed using a digital state feedback control method. In this approach, the large signal average converter model is used to derive the robust tracking control algorithm of the state feedback controller instead of using the small signal modeling approach. The proposed control system can precisely achieve the interleaved current sharing and the output voltage regulation, and can achieve the systematical controller design for digital implementation using the pole placement technique. Also, a dynamic gain feed-forward control method using the operation point of the converter is proposed to improve the audio susceptibility. For a design example, a parallel module bus regulator system in the Low-Earth-Orbit (LEO) satellite power system application, which has an input voltage step change, is implemented using a TMS320F2812 DSP.

This paper represents current and probable applications of digitalhumanmodeling (DHM) in different industries. Three real-world challenges, Cummins Inc. (New Product Launches), NASA (Ground Operations), Purdue University (DHM in Curriculum), are investigated for current/probable benefits of DHM. Direct contacts with company representatives and academic faculty were established to understand the current challenges and probable demands of tasks/operations in industry where DHM tools can be utilized. Dassault Systemes' CATIA V5 PLM solution package and UGS Tecnomatix JACK DHM software was utilized to offer a resolution for industrial (Cummins Inc. and NASA) challenges and a software manual (JACK) is developed to enhance the engineering curriculum at Purdue University. The results indicated that DHM tools have potential to improve the product development challenges and provides control of the entire process of designing and analyzing a product before it's ever launched. DHM in engineering curriculum would also increase the integration/adaptation of DHM tools in industry.

This paper presents the current and probable future applications of digitalhumanmodeling (DHM) in Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) implementations. A Formula I race car and a marine vessel were developed by the integration of PLM and DHM software packages. Dassault Systemes' CATIA V5 PLM solution package was used for CAD/CAE design/analysis and UGS Tecnomatix JACK software was utilized for visual/mathematical ergonomics and human analysis. Literature review for future work, [1] and [2], was discussed to investigate the potentials of DHM in PLM for simulation of a blast motion in Navy vessels. The results and observations indicated that integration of DHM and PLM packages have potentials to improve the product development efforts and offer an enhanced approach for simulation of complex systems where there is human-machine integration.

This paper focuses on validating the performance of virtual interactive design (VID) environment with dynamic ergonomics analysis. Previous studies have only validated VID for posture-based static ergonomics analysis, and applied the methodology on several studies. While since dynamic information is important for ergonomics analysis, this study will investigate the performance of VID environment for ergonomics analysis considering dynamic information such as velocity, which uses motion instead of posture as analysis target.

The work presented in this paper refers to the implementation of a product development process based on the use of virtual model of the human body to design specific custorn-fit product, such as a prosthesis socket (interface between the residual limb and the mechanical part of the prosthesis). It considers the integration of advanced ICT tools coming from the reverse engineering, the physics-based modelling and simulation, and the rapid prototyping fields. The paper describes problems related to the implementation of each step within a real socket development process.
The main objective of this work is to show a broad view of digitalhumanmodeling software as a tool for aiding interior design projects for aircrafts. This will be achieved by showing digital manikins and their use d...

Using finite element models, the brain tissue deformation is simulated in the case of the head impact during crash accident. In the first part of the research the FE-model is built, in this model complex geometry of the human head, material properties and nonlinearity are considered. There are ten kinds of parts included in this model, which are neurocranium, forehead scalp, cerebrum, cerebellum, brainstem, brainstem, callus, cerebrospinal fluid, viscerocranium, cervical vertebra, neck and shoulder. Referring the material parameters given by references for human brain tissues, the deformation under the conditions that the vehicle is impacted under certain velocities of 60km/h, 90km/h and 120km/h is simulated. The results of the digital simulation show the pressure, stress and strain distribution on the mid-sagittal plane. The results represent that the location of the contusions of the brain tissues and more important is that from these simulations it can predict the injury biomechanics of the head impact. The findings of this research work are helpful for the digitalhuman, particularly the brain contusion mechanism study. They are also useful for the design of the head protective devices.
