Airbag induced injuries to front seated infants and children have resulted in US government recommendations that suggest, among other things, the placement of children into the rear seat area of motor vehicles. During a rear impact, however, most conventional automotive front seats occupied by adults will collapse into the rear seat area. This exposes the rear-seated children to other risks of injuries. Rearward load strength tests run on a wide variety of commercially available automotive front seat systems, such as the single or dual sided recliner types and the stronger belt integrated types, demonstrate a wide range of occupant load resistance. digital human simulation offers a cost effective, efficient, and accurate means for predicting occupant response and interactions influenced by various types of non-linear deforming seat systems, as well as various types of restraints, and vehicle interior structures. In this study, several computer simulations of rear impacts were performed with an available ATB (Articulated Total Body) computer code to demonstrate an efficient and accurate means for assessing the safety performance and hazards associated with occupied front seat collapse into a rear seat area occupied by children. The analysis considered a wide range of different sized front-seated adults (i.e. 50 kg females to 110 kg males), various types of front seats with a range of ultimate non-linear collapse strengths (i.e. 3,220 N up to the 14,500 N level of a Belt-Integrated-Seat), and various impact severities with speed changes between 22 to 45 kph. After performing the analysis several actual sled-buck experimental tests were made, with the same parameter range and a full vehicle interior, to verify and validate the human model predictions for the range of parameters described above. This paper presents the results of a study using computer human modeling to examine machine appendage speed. The objective was to determine the impact of roof bolter machine appendage speed on the likelihood of the operator coming in contact with. A contact means two or more objects intersecting or touching each other, e.g., appendage makes contact with the operator's hand, arm, head or leg. Incident investigation reports do not usually contain enough information to aid in studying this problem and laboratory experiments with human subjects are also not feasible because of safety and ethical issues. As an alternative, researchers developed a computer model approach as the primary means to gather data. By simulating an operator's random behavior and machine's appendage velocity, researchers can study potential hazards of tasks where it is not possible to perform experiments with human subjects. Analysis information is helpful to the mining industry in terms of making recommendations that reduce the likelihood that roof-bolter operators experience injury due to contact with a moving boom. Data analysis of roof bolter simulations show that the virtual-operator's response time has little effect on the number of contacts experienced. Based on frequency and cross-tabulation, regardless of other variables, contact incidents were always greater when the boom was moving up, were always greater on the palm, and were always greater for the boom part of the machine. Also, regardless of boom speed, the 25th-percentile- sized operators experienced more contacts than did other operator sizes. Furthermore, regardless of boom speed, the 152-cm mine seam experienced more contacts than did other seam heights tested. Results of a survival analytic approach suggest that controlling the boom speed is the most important factor in determining the risk of an operator making contact. Cutting development times in car manufacturing means bringing forward the knowledge processes. Simulations based directly on CAD data reduce or replace time-consuming hardware loops significantly and therefore make a significant contribution to this. Ergonomic product design is an area that is challenged as far as the further development of virtual methods is concerned. Simulation of the static and quasi-static positions of passengers inside the car is the current state of the art in ergonomic product design. For this reason, interest is strongly focused on the simulation of complex movement processes within the context of enhancing simulation tools. For the car manufacturer, the manner in which people enter and leave the car is of particular interest. Getting into the car is the customers' first actual contact with it. It may also develop into a serious problem for car drivers, as they get older. The work described here is aimed at establishing basic principles for the simulation of car-entry movements that permit them to be modeled. In the first project phase the focus was on the development of a method of registering and evaluating car-entry movements quantitatively. It was considered especially important for later implementation for the results to be compatible with the planned "RAMSIS" simulation tool. During the data collection process, entry movements were recorded by means of an optical tracking procedure -the "Vicon 624" system from Oxford Metrics. BMW has developed a "Variable In- and Egress Mock-up" (VEMO) to permit variations in the entry geometries. Initial tests were used to validate the feasibility and accuracy of the experimental structure. They revealed the necessity for a further preliminary study relating to entry strategies. The result of the representative study was that the "Slip-in" strategy is the most used strategy of male and female persons. Ejection seat cushions in current U.S. Air Force aircraft are not suitable for comfort during extended missions. Specific physiological problems such as buttock, leg and back pain, numbness and tingling in the extremities, and overall fatigue have been documented in past laboratory research and operational use [1,2,3,5,6]. designing a single cushion to address the physiological problems of the entire aircrew population is a significant challenge. Cushion material selection, cockpit space restrictions, and limited ability to reposition during flight contribute to discomfort during extended missions. Ejection seat dimensions and contours are fixed in most cases, causing accommodation problems for large and small occupants. A pilot study was performed at the Air Force Research Laboratory at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base to investigate objective test methods for determining cushion comfort. Five volunteer subjects were tested with a variety of operational and prototype cushions. Peak seated pressures, contact areas, and lumbar spinal shapes were measured for each cushion. Tests ranged from six-minute quick looks to gather comparative objective measurements, to four-hour extended seating tests to gather subjective and performance data. The study showed objective test methods could be used to identify comfort trends for different cushion candidates. Seated peak pressures and contact areas differed among the cushion specimens that were tested. Trends in subject performance and comfort ratings were also shown. Alternate pressure and shape measurement test equipment and data analysis techniques should be investigated. The data also show that the comfort characteristics of current operational equipment could be improved.

Analysis, design, simulation and DSP-based implementation of a digital controller using a Posicast element are presented for the boost converter. Different from the classical Posicast approach, the proposed control method here reduces undesirable sensitivity greatly by using Posicast within a feedback loop. Furthermore, unfavorable effects on system stability caused by the RHP zero and parasitic elements in the boost converter's dynamics can be ignored in the design of controller because of its narrow open-loop bandwidth. Transient and frequency responses are presented. The performance of a Posicast-based controller for a boost converter has been investigated through simulation and verified by experiment. The sensitivity of the system dynamical response to variations in controller parameters was examined. The effect of load resistance variation was also tested.

The NSF digital Clay project is focused on the design, prototyping, integration, and validation of a computer-controlled physical device capable of taking any of a wide range of possible shapes in response to changes in a digital 3D model or to changes in the pressure exercised upon it by human hands. Although it clearly is a natural and unavoidable evolution of 3D graphical user interfaces, its unprecedented capabilities constitute a major leap in technologies and paradigms for 3D display, for 3D input, and for collaborative 3D design. In this paper, we provide an overview of the digital Clay project and discuss the challenges, design choices, and initial solutions for a new finger sculpting interface designed for the digital Clay and prototyped using conventional 3D I/O hardware.

The design of artifacts and environments for people with disabilities has been frustrated by the lack of design oriented digital human Models (DHM). This paper describes a process for the development of a Functional Visualization System (FVS) for the creation of DHM for use by designers and progress made in the development of the FVS. The System employs a 'synthetic' or 'human figure model' approach and includes standard measurement procedures for the capture of anthropometric data, the development of computer programs and processes for the visualization of the data which has been captured, the verification of collected data and the investigation of the utilization of visualization tools by designers and clinicians.

A complete 3D virtual model of the major structures of the ear responsible for the transfer of sound was constructed using computer-aided design (CAD) software. The model was created from the digital images of histological sections of a human temporal bone. These images were enhanced, resized, and aligned with respect to four fiducial marks using photo management software. Each structure of the ear including the external ear canal, middle ear, and cochlea was extracted from the sections and arranged to produce a complete 3D model within the SolidWorks environment. The individual structures can then be combined to produce a complete model of the entire human ear. The model will be used for analysis and further advanced modeling techniques.

Project Lead The Way (PLTW) is a national program that offers a pre-engineering curriculum for high schools and middle schools. The high school curriculum consists of five courses covering solid modeling with a CAD package, digital electronics, principles of engineering, computer integrated manufacturing, and implementation of a design project. Teachers learn the technical, project-based course material in an intensive, two-week summer training session at the PLTW Summer Training Center at Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) or at one of the six National Training Affiliates. Nearly 300 high schools and middle schools across the country are affiliated with PLTW. This report discusses the Project Lead The Way program nationally as well as its implementation in Indiana. This paper gives a brief description of the five courses in the high school curriculum and the gateway course in the middle school curriculum. These courses emphasize hands-on, project-oriented learning. This paper also tells how PLTW, the Indiana Department of Education, Purdue University, RIT, and affiliate schools in the state have come together to implement this program in Indiana.
