This paper describes two expert systems designed to assist in matching personnel to positions within a company. The first system was developed and implemented at digital Equipment Corporation. The second is part of an on-going research project begun by the authors in 1969 involving cognitive modeling of strategic management and other management processes. A number of expert systems are being developed to aid in human resources management. One such system, the first described in this paper, has been developed and implemented at digital Equipment Corporation to help deal with changing skill requirements for manufacturing personnel. The discussion of this system focuses on the problems of implementing KBS in large corporate environments. The second system described is in the prototype stage. It focuses on staffing a knowledge-based system development effort-specifically, making knowledge engineer assignment decisions for particular KBS projects.< >

A real-time tactical decision generation system for air combat engagements, Paladin, has been developed. A pilot's job in air combat includes tasks that are largely symbolic. These symbolic tasks are generally performed through the application of experience and training (i.e., knowledge) gathered over years of flying a fighter aircraft. Two such tasks, situation assessment and throttle control, are identified and broken out in Paladin to be handled by specialized knowledge-based systems. Knowledge pertaining to these tasks is encoded into rule bases to provide the foundation for decisions. Paladin uses a customer-built inference engine and a partitioned rule-base structure to give these symbolic results in real time. An overview of knowledge-based reasoning systems as a subset of rule-based systems is provided. The knowledge used by Paladin in generating results as well as the system design for real-time execution is discussed. Paladin uses artificial intelligence techniques to address air-to-air combat and agile aircraft in a clear and concise manner. The Differential Maneuvering Simulator offers a unique opportunity to evaluate the performance of the Paladin software in a real-time tactical environment against human pilots.< >

KINFIDA (knowledge-based intelligent filter design assistant), a hybrid knowledge-based system with a model-based reasoning architecture for digital filter design, is described. It extends the concept of an isolated digital signal processing CAD tool and provides a closed-loop design environment where the system expertise can grow incrementally with minimal effect on the controls and the reasoning process. It utilizes IEEE signal processing libraries and is implemented in Nexpert Object, a commercial object-rule-based development system. The user interface is implemented using the X11 toolkit package. Using an interactive human interface, KINFIDA suggests likely filter approaches, estimates undetermined parameters, provides performance estimates, and suggests candidate VLSI technologies satisfying a desired filtering operation.< >

A reliable specification and execution tool (RSET) that supports a rigorous object-oriented constraint-based specification method called box structures for object-oriented development (Box Structures/OOD) is described. RSET also supports the simulation of systems from their specifications. The object-oriented paradigm employs concepts such as object classification, relationships between objects, and constraints on objects, that are natural to human discourse. In all cases, there is exactly a one-to-one correspondence between objects in the specification and the specifier's view of the objects in the system being specified. There is a straightforward mapping from the specification to an Ada implementation. The specifications are formal and support automatic consistency and completeness checking. The specifications are executable, allowing systems to be simulated at the specification level. Box Structures/OOD is uniformly applicable to the specification, design, and implementation of large complex software systems (e.g. real-time, distributed, parallel).< >

The electronic implementation of neuromorphic systems requires technologies well matched to the functions of storage and the computation of sums of products. Additional requirements are low-power, high fan-out capability and high-density interconnect. Massive parallelism and redundancy mitigate the accuracy limitations of analog circuits and force consideration of analog and analog-digital components for network realization. Adaptive neuromorphic networks have the potential for self-organization and learning in speech and image understanding systems requiring minimal human intervention.< >

This paper presents the design of a simple digital servomotor control algorithm used to simulate human motion in the testing of rehabilitation/exercise equipment performance. design performance specifications were determined to simulate typical human motion torque and dynamics. The motor was modelled mathematically, and the parameters of the model were obtained from a step input response. The minimal prototype method was used to obtain a digital control algorithm, which was implemented in the FORTH language on a PDP 11/23 computer.

The Integrated Mission Planning System (IMPS) provides a revolutionary color map display that translates and rotates in real time with aircraft movement. digital terrain elevation data is used to construct shaded 'relief map' images, perspective views, perform required computations, and interact with a terrain correlation system. Examples of humanengineering analyses and experiments leading to functional requirements, display and control design criteria, and aviator-computer dialogue structure are described.
