Industry 5.0 heralds a new wave of the industrial revolution, placing a spotlight on human-centric intelligent manufacturing. At the core of Industry 5.0 lies the human-cyber-physical system (HCPS), a composite intelligent system where interactions among humans, cyberspace, and physical assets are orchestrated across diverse manufacturing levels and phases. Understanding the pivotal roles played by humans in these advanced systems is of paramount importance. Nonetheless, the exploration of HCPS within the context of Industry 5.0 remains in its infancy. This paper presents a holistic literature review of industrial HCPS from a human-centric perspective. A united architecture is employed to encompass the aspects of cognitive-to-technology integration and human-to-human interaction in HCPS, highlighting human-in-the-loop, human-on-the-loop, and human-in-the-society paradigms. The mechanisms of these paradigms and their effects on design, production, and service are investigated to expand the research landscape of intelligent manufacturing in Industry 5.0. Key enabling technologies that facilitate harmonious tri-space integration are introduced, and the future challenges of industrial HCPS are discussed. This work is expected to attract more open discussions and in-depth research on HCPS in the new industrial revolution era. Note to Practitioners-This paper is motivated by the emergence of Industry 5.0 that integrates humans into cyber-physical systems to offset drawbacks on both sides. It presents an overview of HCPS-related works to identify the state-of-the-art and open problems in the Industry 5.0 era. The review of HCPS applications in the design, production, and service phases can benefit engineers in the intelligent manufacturing area. Key enabling technologies on human ability augmentation, human-robot interaction, digital twin, human-cyber-physical data fusion, crowdsourcing, and system modeling, are analyzed to attract researchers in broader research fields to

A Fingertip Optical Fiber Composite Sensor With Conformal design for Robotic Perception of Tactile Force

This study employs fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensing for finger force feedback and position measurement, crucial in robotic intelligent perception and human-robot interaction. The fingertip three-axis force sensor placed inside the skinned sensor is threaded to the fingertip cap and finger joint. Such removable conformal configuration offers distinct benefits in compactness and finger composite force measurement. A response surface method (RSM) driven by simulation data is proposed for theoretical modeling and optimization of structural parameters. The experimental results demonstrate sensitivities of 225, 229, and 97 pm/N in x-, y-, and z-directions within +/- 10 N, with dynamic measurement errors under 4.84%. Random forest (RF) and back propagation neural network model is developed to classify and regress the finger belly pressure, which achieves 99% classification accuracy and 7.86% maximum regression error in single-point and double-point pressure. Recognition experiments on material texture and international braille have proved its feasibility and reliability. These results are significant to the fingertip tactile force sensor design for human-robot interaction.

Non-contact body measurement for garment customization based on 2D images: A systematic review

Non-contact anthropometric measurement is suitable for remote and rapid acquisition of human body dimensions. Especially, anthropometric measurements based on 2D images provide a basis for garment mass customization. In this paper, we reviewed two decades of research on non-contact body measurement based on 2D images, detailing critical processes such as image acquisition, contour extraction, feature point detection, and dimension calculation. Then, we summarized the applications of 2D non-contact body measurement in the garment industry. We found that the current research is confronted with the following three predicaments: Contour extraction in complex backgrounds;Accurate body dimension estimation or calculation;Applicable only to the nude body or tight-fitting status. These limitations restricted the application of 2D non-contact body measurement in garment mass customization. Future research should be focused on rapid body contour extraction from complex backgrounds from the images provided by consumers with tight-fitting or loose-fitting conditions, additionally improving the accuracy of body dimension measurement caused by multi-step iteration error. Reconstruction of the 3D human body model for body dimension measurement, and estimation of body shape and dimensions from the dressed body will be the feasible and reliable approaches for accurate non-contact body measurement based on 2D images.

A Redundant Parallel Continuum Manipulator With Stiffness-Varying and Force-Sensing Capability

This paper presents the design, analysis, and validation of a novel redundant planar parallel continuum manipulator (PCM) consisting of four flexible links coupled at the rigid mid-and end-platform. To address complex geometry/static hybrid constraints at the rigid platforms, a general framework is developed for the kinetostatics modeling and analysis. Benefiting from the redundant actuation design, the Cartesian stiffness of the studied PCM can be further adjusted as a secondary task to positioning. Utilizing the proposed deflection-based force sensing method, the external load exerted on the end-effector can also be identified by measuring the pose of rigid platforms. To validate the proposed design, a prototype is built, on which a series of experiments have been conducted. The results show that, with the proposed kinetostatics models, the prototype exhibits a mean position and orientation error of 0.52 mm and 0.41(degrees). Finally, the capability of stiffness-varying and force-sensing is demonstrated to verify the feasibility and potential applications of the designed redundant PCM. Note to Practitioners-This paper is motivated by the need for more adaptable robotic systems in industrial and interactive settings. In this work, a novel redundant parallel continuum manipulator with variable passive compliance and force-sensing capability is presented. This planar manipulator comprises four flexible limbs, each driven by independent linear modules, thus the redundancy in the actuation can be leveraged for varying Cartesian stiffness. By means of measuring the pose of the end-effector, the interaction force exerted on the end-effector can be identified according to the force sensing model. The structural compliance of the manipulator enhances safety in human-robot collaboration, while variable stiffness accommodates the specific requirements of different interaction tasks. Enterprises today have to navigate a rapidly evolving landscape driven by technological advancements, intensifying global competition, and shifting market dynamics. To remain competitive, organizations must adopt agile and digital solutions that enhance operational efficiency, optimize processes, and accelerate time-to-market. This research introduces a comprehensive methodology designed to evaluate enterprise performance across a variety of scenarios, with a specific focus on product development processes. The proposed methodology rests on three pillars: modeling, simulation, and their integration. Leveraging Model-based Systems engineering (MBSE) and the Unified Architecture Framework (UAF), the methodology provides a structured approach to model organizational elements such as processes, resources (tools, personnel), and goals, establishing a cohesive enterprise architecture. A holistic agent based simulation facilitates a granular analysis of the enterprise operations. The simulation captures dynamic interactions and emergent behaviors, enabling quantitative evaluations of the individual impacts of digital tools, processes and human resources on organizational outcomes. The seamless integration between the modeling and simulation environments is ensured through the use of a centralized Authoritative Source of Truth (ASOT), maintaining consistency and traceability. This end-to-end approach enables scenario-based assessments and quantitative evaluations of alternative configurations, addressing the limitations of traditional EA frameworks by capturing dynamic interactions and emergent behaviors. This methodology therefore lays the groundwork for the further development of digital Twins of Organizations (DTOs), one that facilitates strategic decision-making and optimization in complex enterprise environments. © 2025, American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Inc, AIAA. Modern digital systems are increasingly pervasive and autonomous, also due to the widespread use of AI technologies. They concur to create socio-technical systems, composed of distributed entities interacting with and within the environment, under constant perturbations. This resembles of Collective Adaptive Systems. However, from the human-perspective, AI-enabled autonomous and adaptive systems raise more than just privacy concerns;they also affect other ethical values and human dignity. In this paper, we introduce the concept of ethical-aware Collective Adaptive Systems and we outline challenges to design Collective Adaptive Systems respectful of human ethical values.

Evaluating HRM practices for embracing the digital circular economy in Indian manufacturing firms: an analytical study

Purpose: human Resources Management (HRM) plays a crucial role in fostering sustainability and operational efficiency in Indian manufacturing firms. This study examines the impact of recruitment, training, and performance appraisal on the adoption of digital circular economy models, identifying gaps in current HRM practices and their impact on firm performance. design/methodology/approach: HRM practices significantly impact the adoption of a digital circular economy in Indian manufacturing firms, according to a study involving 256 employees across 17 firms, using structural equation modeling to test hypotheses and provide insights. Findings: HRM practices in Indian manufacturing firms significantly contribute to the adoption of the digital circular economy, but the influence of compensation, rewards, and employee engagement on circular economy adoption needs to be better aligned with sustainability goals. Research limitations/implications: The research has limitations in terms of limited sample size and focus on specific HRM practices, which may not fully represent the diverse landscape of Indian manufacturing firms and omit factors such as organizational culture and external environment. Originality/value: HRM practices are significantly impacting the Indian economy, with a focus on enhancing sustainability and operational efficiency in manufacturing firms. © 2024, Emerald Publishing Limited.

Industry 5.0 emphasizes human-centric approaches in technological advancement, particularly crucial in healthcare applications such as prosthetics development. While individual technologies like additive manufacturing, machine learning, digital twins, and tissue engineering have shown promise in prosthetics innovation, their integration remains a significant challenge. This paper presents a novel multidisciplinary framework developed through the National Centre for High-Performance Computing (CN-HPC) project, which addresses the gap between individual technological capabilities and their coordinated application in personalized prosthetics development. The framework, implemented through collaboration between six research groups from two universities, employs the House of Quality methodology to align technological integration with patient needs. Our approach encompasses a comprehensive seven-step process, from initial patient requirements definition through virtual modeling, production process optimization, virtual sensing, machine learning enhancement, digital twin simulation, to advanced tissue engineering. A data model facilitates seamless information exchange between different technological domains and research groups. This research contributes to the field by providing a scalable, human-centered framework for technology integration in medical device development, potentially extending beyond prosthetics to other healthcare applications. The proposed framework represents a significant step toward realizing the full potential of Industry 5.0 in healthcare manufacturing through the systematic integration of advanced technologies for delivering personalized prosthetic solutions. © 2024 The Authors. Wave Propagation in Prestressed Structures with Geometric Nonlinearities Through Carrera Unified Formulation

This paper deals with the analysis of wave propagation characteristics in various prestressed structures with geometric nonlinearities using the Carrera Unified Formulation (CUF). CUF provides a versatile platform to model a wide range of structures and nonlinearities that can take care of all wave propagation aspects. In this work, different geometric nonlinearities for which representative governing equations have been derived and numerical solutions have been obtained through a unified approach are considered. The study investigates in detail the effect of prestress and geometric nonlinearity on wave propagation behavior. The results indicate that prestress has a very influential effect on modal frequency and dispersion characteristics for wave propagation. Specifically, three CUF-modeled beams are considered herein, having a sandwich, metallic portal, and metallic box cross section, respectively. Initially, the principal cross-sectional modal shapes of the unstressed, linear, and full nonlinear (i.e., full three-dimensional Green-Lagrange strain matrix) beam with a prestress are investigated, among which torsional and flexural modes can be recognized. Afterward, the equilibrium curves of such structures for various geometrical nonlinear approximations are traced, highlighting that most types of nonlinearity induce a hardening behavior in the system, which increases with the preload, directly leading to a variation in modal frequencies. The dispersion relations of the full nonlinear structure examined as a function of the applied preload are further compared, enriching the investigation by exploiting wave finite element method capabilities. This knowledge paves the way toward the design and optimization of prestressed systems with enhanced acoustic performance, and that fosters the development of sound absorption, noise insulation, and structural isolation.

This study contributes to mass customization by addressing the lack of effective methods for extracting and analyzing personalized demand indicators from user feedback. Prior studies often neglect the mapping relationship between user feedback and production characteristics, the practical integration of user experience data with product design constraints, limiting their ability to meet diverse consumer needs. To overcome these challenges, this study proposes a data-driven approach that combines k-means clustering, sentiment analysis, and deep learning to identify key comment factors impacting the user experience of customized products. This study offers substantial scientific value by proposing a systematic and scalable method for understanding consumer preferences in mass customization. It provides manufacturers with actionable insights for improving product competitiveness and customer satisfaction. The results demonstrate that product thinness and performance are the most critical factors for personalized information technology product design, significantly influencing user satisfaction. Regression analysis confirms that while these factors, along with price, heavily affect user ratings, battery life and heat dissipation are of secondary importance.
