Increased security risk in international travel has resulted in the creation of new programs to determine the admissibility of foreign travelers at official ports of entry within a country. Primary program goals are improving border security and, at the same time, facilitating the flow of legitimate travelers. Major program requirements include the adoption of machine readable travel documents (i.e., passports, visas, etc.), the use of biometric identifiers, and the interoperability among multiple information systems for travelersy identity verification and background checks. Performance analysis of a border inspection system early in its development life-cycle is essential to predict its ability to meet established performance goals, to identify key performance drivers and potential bottlenecks and to suggest possible design improvements. This paper presents our experience with performance evaluation of a hypothetical inspection system. We adopt an analytical modeling technique based on layered queuing networks. Compared with similar studies which use extensive simulations, we observe that our methodology achieves comparably accurate results while being simpler and less costly

In MRI, electromagnetic fields with frequencies from DC to hundreds of MHz and with magnitudes from under one microTesla to several Tesla are used to manipulate the magnetic moments of atomic nuclei within the human body. These fields interact with tissues in numerous ways, resulting in both engineering challenges to maintain image integrity, and safety considerations. Field calculations can be used as tools to both design improvements to the quality of MRI in the presence of tissue-induced field distortions and to ensure patient safety. This requires accurate representation of the fields, realistic biological models, and adequate consideration of MRI physics

Nowadays, synchronous processor designers have to deal with severe problems related to the distribution of a complex clock network like skew reduction, high power-consumption, synchronization of clocks, etc. Asynchronous or self-timed architectures are becoming an interesting design alternative because they usually avoid these drawbacks, and they are able to achieve high performance at a low power consumption cost. However, on the first steps of the design process, the evaluation of the performance of such architectures through simulations is much more complicated due to the requirement of modeling the data-dependant timing of each system module. The aim of this paper is to evaluate the performance of a 64-bit fully-asynchronous superscalar processor microarchitecture with dynamically scheduled instruction flow, out-of-order speculative execution of instructions and advanced branch prediction. To tackle this goal we have described the asynchronous microarchitecture solving the synchronization between structures through a four-phase handshake protocol. Then, we have used a modification of the SimpleScalar suite to model the asynchronous microarchitecture in order to run Alpha programs on it. Finally, we have compared the performance of this fully-asynchronous processor with the performance obtained from its synchronous counterpart by running architectural simulations of the SPEC2000 benchmarks on both models

The goal of this project was to design a card game simulation of financial trade markets. In a trading environment, a market maker quotes two prices for a specific type of financial instrument, such as a stock option. Traders then buy shares from or sell shares to the market maker. The decision of the market maker to quote prices at certain levels, and the traders' decisions to buy or sell are based primarily on their independent estimation of the fair market value, or the true price of the instrument, once all information has been accounted for. The goal of the market maker is to quote prices which best reflect the fair market value of the financial instrument. The simulation developed for this project was designed to accurately account for these behaviors. This project sought to fulfil the need of the Susquehanna International Group of Companies (SIG) for a recruitment tool that can be distributed in large numbers at employment venues such as career fairs. The recruitment tool is essentially an informational CD-ROM that includes a home page, a game page with the simulation, and a quiz page with probability questions. This tool helps users assess their interest, and ability to perform in a financial market making environment. A University of Virginia (UVA) Systems and Information engineering Capstone team worked with SIG to define a format and set of rules by which the simulation game would be played. A card game style format was adopted in which cards from a standard fiftytwo card deck represent information that would bear impact on a financial instrument's final price, such as earnings reports and news stories. The human player acts as the market maker and the computer players act as traders. Each player is dealt separate cards to simulate the diversity of information available in financial trade markets. The NASA Langley Research Center (LaRC) Cockpit Motion Facility (CMF) motion base has provided many design and analysis challenges. In the process of addressing these challenges, a comprehensive suite of software tools was developed. These tools simulate the end to end operation of the motion base system and provide facilities for software-in-the-loop testing, mechanical geometry and sensor data visualizations, and function generator setup and evaluation. This paper describes these tools and the system architecture to which they interface. The tool suite consists of five key elements. The first is the Data Visualization System (DVS) which is used to collect and graphically visualize motion base sensor data, electronically store collected data to file, provide a user interface to program function generators for creating repetitive drive signals and trajectories, and to optionally provide a permanent strip chart record. Secondly, the geometric visualization module provides an accurately scaled, shaded, three dimensional representation of the motion base structure permitting intuitive human visualization of the system's motions and geometric component clearances and interactions. Thirdly, a detailed model used to study dynamic performance and perform load analysis can also be interfaced into the architecture, providing the ability to generate complex final leg and platform trajectories while simulating closed loop operations. This same model also contains the closed loop compensator algorithms from which the embedded control law code is directly generated. Fourthly, a file replay module is included to allow the review of receded data flies using the DVS or the geometric visualization module. Finally, these elements are interfaced to one another through shared memory which also emulates the actual reflective memory hardware used to interface DVS to the embedded digital Control Unit (DCU) during real world motion base operation.

A real-time audio watermarking scheme is presented. The strength of audio signal modifications is limited by the necessity to produce an output signal that is perceptually equal to the original signal. The proposed scheme uses a blind detection approach. To embed the watermark a spread spectrum algorithm is used in the modulated complex lapped transform (MCLT) domain. Here the watermark is generated using a private key and modeling according to the human auditory system. Comparison of several whitening methods in the receptor side is carried out. The embedded watermark is robust to common attacks such like, D/A A/D conversion, filtering, noise addition and high quality MPEG audio coding

A nonlinear adaptive system theoretic approach is presented in this paper for effective treatment of infectious diseases that affect various organs of the human body. The generic model used does not represent any specific disease. However, it mimics the generic immunological dynamics of the human body under pathological attack, including the response to external drugs. From a system theoretic point of view, drugs can be interpreted as control inputs. Assuming a set of nominal parameters in the mathematical model, first a nonlinear controller is designed based on the principle of dynamic inversion. This treatment strategy was found to be effective in completely curing "nominal patients". However, in some cases it is ineffective in curing "realistic patients". This leads to serious (sometimes fatal) damage to the affected organ. To make the drug dosage design more effective, a model-following neuro-adaptive control design is carried out using neural networks, which are trained (adapted) online. From simulation studies, this adaptive controller is found to be effective in killing the invading microbes and healing the damaged organ even in the presence of parameter uncertainties and continuing pathogen attack

Sliding mode control design with fuzzy parameter adaptation for a simulated robot hand is presented. The fuzzy adaptation uses the Takagi & Sugeno model in order to determinate the parameter values which assure system stability. Using this control strategy, the simulated robot hand will be moved without oscillations, in a similar way as human hand. The proposed control method is stable, good behavior to external disturbances, and does not request to know the system parameters (robot hand parameters) exactly. Also, the paper describes the dynamic of the realistic simulator of the simulated robot hand (5 fingers, 15 degrees of freedom)

Reduced time-to-market in spite of increasing the system's functionality, reuse of software on different hardware platforms, and the demand for performing validation activities earlier in the development phase raise the need for revising the state-of-the-art development methodologies for distributed embedded systems. The model driven architecture is a design methodology addressing these emerging requirements. Developing embedded systems according to this model-based paradigm requires a platform-independent representation of the functionality of the application as well as a precise model of the targeted hardware platform. In this paper we introduce a meta-model for capturing the resources of hardware platforms realizing the DECOS architecture, which is an integrated time-triggered architecture aimed at the development of distributed embedded systems. Furthermore, we present a tool chain based on this meta-model that speeds up the modeling process and reduces the likelihood of human errors by facilitating the reuse of hardware building blocks from libraries
