In the decades to come, building production will concentrate in the metropolitan centres of the world due to the migration of the world's population to the major cities. An improvement of the construction process in densely populated inner cities will be the task of the future. This focuses on performance management, construction engineering and construction management. New developments being discussed in this field are new design strategies, human machine technologies, employee safety, progress monitoring, distributed production information and Personal digital Assistants (PDAs). The advent of 90nm and 65nm technology nodes caused design teams to face a concurrent "3-on-1" assault of massive designs, significant increase in functional requirements, and substantial process modeling complexities. While existing solutions have done well in carving out their niches by solving just one of these three challenges, they impose significant user intervention and manual iterations for the rest. The current crop of EDA tools were not developed to handle the 50M-gate capacity offered by a 90nm die. The sheer complexity of the design functionality coupled with process variations has proven them inadequate for design closure. Finally, the lack of implicit support for variability routinely produces chips with sub-optimal yield. New approaches to achieve closure for multi-million gate designs, with rapid execution times, and accurate modeling of pervasive process effects are needed for these technology nodes. We will discuss the salient engineering and technological challenges of building such a system and provide insights into design trade-offs that will help us achieve this seemingly holy grail of digital physical design.
Various statistical approaches have been advocated that aim at creating statistically meaningful and representative models of human variation. While they all have in common the idea to summarize the critical space nee...

Microelectromechanical resonators have been fabricated using the MUMPs process, and characterized. The results of this characterization study are used to provide valuable feedback to improve our MEMS design tool based on the use of evolutionary synthesis algorithms known as genetic algorithms. This tool automatically generates designs that meet the user's performance goals and design constraints. To provide the necessary material property and fabrication parameters required to predict design performance, test designs for a range of performance goals and constraint settings were fabricated and characterized. We report the results of this characterization and validation experiment. design characteristics that lead to accurate performance prediction are identified and the causes for inaccurate modeling are also discussed.

The NASA sponsored Structures Pointing and Controls engineering (SPACE) testbed at CSULA is an experimental apparatus that is capable of performing experiments that simulate the complex dynamics of a large segmented optical system (James Webb Space Telescope). It is intended to serve as a generic experimental facility that can address in an integrated way the problems associated with Control and Structure Interaction, distributed control of multi-input multi-output systems, optics, electronics, actuator and sensor design, and digital implementation. System Identification Experiments, aimed at achieving an accurate system model, will aid in the design of precision control techniques to satisfy the strict control requirements for this complex flexible structure. This paper describes an iterative, offline, frequency-domain, data fit approach for estimation of a mathematical model of this complex NEMO flexible structure. Black-box parameterization of the MIMO system is achieved by modeling the input-output relationships within the system as LTI ordinary nth-order difference equations. In a multi-band approach, nonlinear least-squares optimization will provide the solution to the system parameters.

The last few years a lot of research efforts have been spent on user interfaces for pervasive computing. This paper shows a design process and a runtime architecture, DynaMo-AID, that provide design support and a runtime architecture for context-aware user interfaces. In the process attention is focused on the specification of the tasks the user and the application will have to perform, together with other entities related to tasks, like dialog and presentation. In this paper we will show how we can model tasks, dialogs, and presentation when the designer wants to develop context-sensitive user interfaces. Besides the design process, a runtime architecture will be presented supporting context-sensitive user interfaces. Pervasive user interfaces can change during the runtime of the interactive application due to a change of context or when a service becomes available to the application. We will show that traditional models like task, environment and dialog model have to be extended to tackle these new problems. This is why we provide modeling and runtime support solutions for design and development of context-sensitive user interfaces.
