The increasing complexity of water- and environmental-resource problems require modeling approaches that incorporate knowledge from a broad range of scientific and software disciplines. To address this need, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has developed the Modular modeling System (MMS). MMS is an integrated system of computer software for model development, integration, and application. Its modular design allows a high level of flexibility and adaptability to enable modelers to incorporate their own software into a rich array of built-in models and modeling tools. These include individual process models, tightly coupled models, loosely coupled models, and fully- integrated decision support systems. A geographic information system (GIS) interface, the USGS GIS Weasel, has been integrated with MMS to enable spatial delineation and characterization of basin and ecosystem features, and to provide objective parameter-estimation methods for models using available digital data. MMS provides optimization and sensitivity-analysis tools to analyze model parameters and evaluate the extent to which uncertainty in model parameters affects uncertainty in simulation results. MMS has been coupled with the Bureau of Reclamation object-oriented reservoir and river-system modeling framework, RiverWare, to develop models to evaluate and apply optimal resource-allocation and management strategies to complex, operational decisions on multipurpose reservoir systems and watersheds. This decision support system approach has been developed, tested, and implemented in the Gunnison, Yakima, San Joaquin, Rio Grande, and Truckee River basins of the western United States. MMS is currently being coupled with the U.S. Forest Service model SIMulating Patterns and Processes at Landscape Scales (SIMPPLLE) to assess the effects of alternative vegetation-management strategies on a variety of hydrological and ecological responses. Initial development and testing of the MMS-SIMPPLLE integration is bein

In practice, enabling technologies, along with digital models and computer-aided / computer-based systems, are still not sufficiently integrated to make life cycle modeling and life cycle assessment methods and technologies suitable tools for designers and engineers. For example, life cycle assessment is becoming more and more an integral tool in today's product design and design evaluation during analysis and optimization. However, approaches and tools that still feature old fashioned paradigms and structures in critical areas such as human-computer interaction and information representation are somewhat counter-productive, considering the increase of both the complexity of the problem and the quantities of data to be handled. In this paper we aim at presenting, in a transparent way, the motivations, structure, and consequences of one approach leading to solutions which overcome such obstacles. This approach also supports the application and successful translation into practice of one modern methodology which is central for the cradle-to-grave evaluation used to improve environmentally conscious products and service designs.

Especially during the last decade the demand for portable power is steadily rising due to the increasing wireless products integrated in our day-to-day lives (cellular phone, personal digital assistant (PDA) and of course the remote control for your television set or VCR). These portable consumer electronics are mainly powered by alkaline batteries, and nowadays more and more by rechargeables. Alternative power sources, like fuel cells and photovoltaic cells, can be used in portable consumer electronics, possibly making them more cost-effective, more environmentally and user friendly. For the consumer industry the opportunities of these other alternative power-sources is unknown, and designers are not known with the state-of-the-art of the technology. Opportunities for short-term but especially long-term developments in portable electronics are in that way overlooked. In this paper the most interesting power-sources available will be compared on the basis of power and energy characteristics, and costs. Emerging power sources like fuel cells are a very interesting alternative for the lithium-ion battery, but the road ahead for it is still long when we look at state-of-the-art developments. Other power sources described and compared are: ether-smog, human power, thermo-electric generators, piëzo generators, electro-mechanical devices, photovoltaic cells, micro fuel-cells and micro combustion-engines.

This work describes the analysis, modeling and design of a buck-based inverter control for grid-connected photovoltaic (PV) systems. On one hand a linear digital voltage controller is designed from a large-signal linear sampled-data model of the system to maximize the steady-state input-output energy transfer ratio. On the other hand, a sliding-mode current controller is also designed to assure a unity power factor. The achievement of the DC-AC conversion and the efficient PVs energy extraction are validated with simulation results.

designing and conceptualizing electronic auction systems is a complex task dependent on human, economic, and technical factors. In this paper, we propose a way to simplify that design task and reduce complexity. Using the two software engineering approaches "abstraction" and "divide and conquer" we show how these approaches can be mapped into auction design. The "abstraction" approach leads to a process template that can be parameterized; the "divide and conquer" approach leads to a component based definition of electronic auctions. Both approaches are unified within a "market modeling language (MML)" which provides the design of auction based electronic markets.
