Although many stopping methods of iterative decoding have been discussed in the literatures, many of them only focus on the solvable decoding. In this paper, we proposed a new rule, called measurement of reliability (MOR) that can be used to define the decoding boundary. With two pre-simulated threshold values, the iterative decoding can stop in either high-SNR situation where the decoded bits are highly reliable, or in low-SNR situation where the decoder already has no capability to decode. Through the simulations, the reduced iterations due to early termination (ET) will not affect the SNR performance. Based on our analysis and simulation results, we can further modify the popularly used GENIE chart. Hence, the iterative decoding can be terminated based on two pre-determined threshold values. The ET property can help to either reduce the computational complexity or power consumptions in implementing the iterative decoding in DSP processors or VLSIs.

In this paper, we present a novel MRAM design that is capable of 50 Gbits/in 2 storage density and beyond with sufficient thermal stability and fabrication tolerance. The design utilizes perpendicular magnetic tunnel junction (Nishimura et al., 2002) as the memory element and the word lines and digital lines are arranged as shown in the figure below. The design yields 8F 2 memory cell area assuming the tunnel junction itself is 1F 2 in area where F denotes the fabrication minimum feature size. Micromagnetic simulations were performed for the element size of 40times40times40 nm 3 to identify the single domain regime where magnetic switching becomes robust with little dependence on possible geometric variation introduced in practical fabrication processes. Noting in the single domain regime, the ratio of the perpendicular anisotropy energy constant and saturation magnetization of the storage layer, K/M s , is the switching field, switching field around 100 Oe can be achieved with sufficient thermal magnetic stability (DeltaE > 80 k B T) with a material of appropriate perpendicular anisotropy and saturation magnetization as indicated the results in the figure. The design with 40 nm square memory elements will yield close to 50 Gbits/in 2 storage density

The NASA sponsored Structures Pointing and Controls engineering (SPACE) testbed at CSULA is an experimental apparatus that is capable of performing experiments that simulate the complex dynamics of a large segmented optical system (James Webb Space Telescope). It is intended to serve as a generic experimental facility that can address in an integrated way the problems associated with control and structure interaction, distributed control of multi-input multi-output systems, optics, electronics, actuator and sensor design, and digital implementation. System identification experiments, aimed at achieving an accurate system model, would aid in the design of precision control techniques to satisfy the strict control requirements for this complex flexible structure. This paper describes an iterative, offline, frequency-domain, data fit approach for estimation of a mathematical model of this complex MIMO flexible structure. Black-box parameterization of the MIMO system is achieved by modeling the input-output relationships within the system as LTI ordinary nth-order difference equations. In a multi-band approach, non-linear least-squares optimization would provide the solution to the system parameters

The purpose of the Space Shuttle Cockpit Avionics Upgrade project was to reduce crew workload and improve situational awareness. The upgrade was to augment the Shuttle avionics system with new hardware and software. An early version of this system was used to gather human factor statistics in the Space Shuttle Motion Simulator of the Johnson Space Center for one month by multiple teams of astronauts. The results were compiled by NASA Ames Research Center and it was determined that the system provided a better than expected increase in situational awareness and reduction in crew workload. Even with all of the benefits of the system, NASA cancelled the project towards the end of the development cycle. A major success of this project was the validation of the hardware architecture and software design. This was significant because the project incorporated new technology and approaches for the development of human rated space software. This paper serves as a case study to document knowledge gained and techniques that can be applied for future space avionics development efforts. The major technological advances were the use of reflective memory concepts for data acquisition and the incorporation of Commercial off the Shelf (COTS) products in a human rated space avionics system. The infused COTS products included a real time operating system, a resident linker and loader, a display generation tool set, and a network data manager. Some of the successful design concepts were the engineering of identical outputs in multiple avionics boxes using an event driven approach and inter-computer communication, a reconfigurable data acquisition engine, the use of dynamic linking at runtime, and the use of a dynamic bus bandwidth allocation algorithm. Other significant experiences captured were the use of prototyping to reduce risk, and the correct balance between Object Oriented and Functional based programming.

In recent years, skill preservation of an expert has been a serious problem in the medical or production fields. If digital skill preservation like a bilateral database is attained, it may become an innovative solution of the above problem. In this paper, abstraction and reproduction methods of force sensation from the real environment by bilateral control, and reconstruction method of the real environment are proposed. In the abstraction mode, a master– slave system is composed and the law of action and reaction is attained by bilateral control. We succeeded in realization of a vivid sensation of touch for bilateral robot system. Force and position information of both of master and slave systems is calculated and obtained, being based on acceleration information. In the reconstruction mode, an environment model is reconstructed from the obtained data of the real environment. In the reproduction mode, only the master system is prepared. human operates the master system and feels force sensation from the environmental model which is reconstructed in the reconstruction mode. As a result, the proposed system is able to store the real environment as a bilateral database. The experimental results show the viability of the proposed method.

This paper introduces a novel spiking neural network methodology, and applies it to an odorant learning and detection application. Spike-time dependent plasticity can support coding schemes that are based on spatio-temporal spike patterns. Spiking (or pulsed) neural networks (SNNs) are models which explicitly take into account the timing of inputs. The network input and output are usually represented as series of spikes (delta function or more complex shapes). Plasticity SNNs have an advantage of being able to recurrently process information. Spike-time dependent plasticity can enhance signal transmission by selectively strengthening synaptic connections that transmit precisely timed spikes at the expense of those synapses that transmit poorly timed spikes. Complete theory describes the spiking network's digital implementation. Theory is verified using simulation of a biologically plausible odor environment with 1023 odor receptor inputs. Stochastic on-chip learning uses sampling and a correlation filter to learn odors despite noisy environment conditions. Simulation and Verilog chip design are tested on a field programmable gate array. A scalable field programmable gate array implementation with 1024 inputs, 1 output, and expansion capability for unlimited outputs is synthesized into 87,062 gates

This paper presents a new fully differential 4-PAM CMOS current-mode transmitter. Fully differential 4-PAM current-mode signaling is achieved by using differentially configured 2-bit digital to-analog conversion and fully differential current amplification. A high multiplexing speed is achieved by performing multiplexing at a low-impedance node and inductive shunt peaking with active inductors. The differential configuration of the transmitter not only minimizes the effect of common-mode disturbances, it also minimizes electro-magnetic interference asserted from channels to neighboring devices, making the multiplexer particularly attractive for high-speed data transmission over long interconnects and printed-circuit-board (PCB) traces. The transmitter draws a constant current from the supply voltage, thereby minimizing noise injection to the substrate. The proposed transmitter has been implemented in UMC's 1.2 V 0.13 /spl mu/m CMOS technology and analyzed using spectre from Cadence design Systems with BSIM3v3 device models. Simulation results are presented.

In this paper, we propose a new perception based watermarking algorithm in binary document images for secure authentication purpose. Binary image watermarking with pixel flipping approach is a challenging problem, because flipping the black and white pixels in such simple images can bring noticeable visual distortion. A novel perceptual based model was proposed towards digital watermarking of binary images in the paper of A.T.S. Ho et al. (May 2004). The model estimates the distortion resulting from flipping of a pixel by finding the curvature-weighted distance difference (CWDD) measure between original and watermarked contour segments. In this paper, the reversible property of the CWDD measure is used towards designing a new authentication watermarking algorithm so that the possibility of any undetected modification to the watermarked image is removed. This algorithm embeds an authentication signature computed from the original image into itself after identifying an ordered set of low-distortion pixels. The same ordered set of pixels are correctly found in both the embedder and blind detector through the design of necessary conditions. The ability of the proposed authentication algorithm to detect any modification in the watermarked image is equivalent to the security of cryptographic authentication. The parity attack found in the previous block-wise data hiding methods in binary images is not possible in the proposed algorithm due to pixel-wise embedding of the authentication signature. Simulation results show the imperceptibility of the watermarking process and successful detection of content modifications

The goal of this paper is to investigate the use of fuzzy logic in game playing environment. First, the card game of Euchre was chosen to be simulated. After that a game strategy that a human goes through needed to be implemented through an algorithm the computer could understand. This was achieved by using several basic Surgeno's fuzzy models in neural networks by Yen and Langari, (1999). In addition to the fuzzy logic involved, classical logic was used for various playing schemes to create a hybrid logical interface. One final unique aspect of this project was the use of the palm operating system. In the end, the palm played an intelligent and competitive game of cards.

Three-dimensional landmark delimitations (3DLD) for wheeled mobility users are outlined. A subset of 3DLD definitions is given. Each 3DLD includes a rationale for inclusion in data collection and suggested capturing techniques for the digital human modeling of wheeled mobility users. Structural and functional protocols have been developed for these 3DLD and serve as the basis for a large-scale anthropometric study of wheeled mobility users. This paper focuses on a few key issues in the development of the wheeled mobility user anthropometric protocols such as measurement consistency and rationale for landmarks for use in universal design. The benefits to this approach with comparisons to existing approaches will be discussed. © 2004 SAE Internationa.
