Several nuclear power plants are starting I&C modernization programs using digital equipment to address obsolescence issues and the need to improve plant performance while maintaining high levels of safety. As an integral part of the I&C modernization program at a nuclear power plant, the control room and other human-system interfaces (HSIs) will also be modernized. To support safe and effective operation, it is critical to design, implement, train for, operate, and maintain the control room and HSI changes to take advantage of human cognitive processing abilities. A project, jointly funded by the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) and United States Department of Energy (DOE), is developing guidance for specifying and designing digital components and systems, and their incorporation into control rooms, remote shut-down panels, etc. The guidance is intended for application by utilities and suppliers of digital I&C replacements. The guidance will facilitate specification, design, implementation, operations, maintenance, training, and licensing activities. This guidance will be used to reduce the likelihood of human errors and licensing risk, to gain maximum benefit of implemented technology, and to increase performance. The guidance is of four types. The first is planning guidance to help a utility develop its plant-specific control room operating concepts, its plant-specific endpoint vision for the control room, its migration path to achieve that endpoint vision, and its regulatory, licensing, and human factors program plans. The second is guidance for general HSI design and integration, human factors engineering analyses, training and simulation, verification and validation, and performance monitoring processes. The third is detailed guidance for control room and HSI technical areas. The fourth is guidance for licensing. Occupational populations have become increasingly diverse, requiring novel accommodation technologies for inclusive design. Hence, further attention is required to identify potential differences in work perception between workers with varying physical limitations. The major aim of this study was to identify differences in shoulder loading and perception of effort between a control population (C) and populations affected by chronic back pain (LBP) and spinal cord injury (SCI) in one-handed seated transfer tasks to targets. The effects of the injuries, and associated pain, are likely to produce variations in movement patterns, muscle loading and perceived effort. The main results show that a) the LBP group had the highest movement time required for an exertion;significantly higher than both the SCI and C groups, while the SCI group had significantly longer exertion times than group C, b) the SCI and LBP groups had significantly higher total, maximum, and mean shoulder torques than the C group, c) the mean shoulder effort ratings for LBPs and SCIs were significantly higher than those for Cs, d) LBPs reported higher shoulder effort ratings than SCIs, e) SCIs and/or LBPs were unable to reach some of the targets;and f) the perception of effort tended to increase as a function of the linear distance between the seat and the target shelf. Differences in shoulder loading and perception were attributed to differences in movement velocities and strategies between the groups. These results suggest that workplace adaptation must take into account population specific characteristics. Copyright © 2004 SAE International.

Interaction of the human arm and deploying airbag has been studied in the laboratory using post mortem human subjects (PMHS). These studies have shown how arm position on the steering wheel and proximity to the airbag prior to deployment can influence the risk of forearm bone fractures. Most of these studies used older driver airbag modules that have been supplanted by advanced airbag technology. In addition, new numerical human body models have been developed to complement, and possibly replace, the human testing needed to evaluate new airbag technology. The objective of this study is to use a finite element-based numerical (MADYMO) model, representing the human arm, to evaluate the effects of advanced driver airbag parameters on the injury potential to the bones of the forearm. The paper shows how the model is correlated to Average Distal Forearm Speed (ADFS) and arm kinematics from two PMHS tests. The PMHS testing employed different offsets (0 and 25mm) between the airbag and forearm in a driving position, using the two arms of the same human subject. The model is then exercised to determine predictive ability for forearm fracture seen with the 0mm offset test, but not seen with the 25mm offset. The model accurately predicts fracture in the 0mm offset test, and no fracture in the 25mm offset test using a ADFS criterion of 10.5 m/s. Model elements in the ulna that rapidly exceed an arbitrary 1% effective strain criteria correspond to fracture locations on the ulna of the 0mm offset PMHS test. The model is then exercised to predict fracture using the ADFS criterion for multiple inflator outputs. The paper also discusses issues and recommendations for human model parameters to further increase the robustness of the model. Copyright © 2004 SAE International.

Today, Internet-based appliances can allow a user to interact with the server-side services and information using different kinds of computing platforms including traditional office desktops, palmtops, as well as a large variety of wireless devices including mobile telephones, Personal digital Assistants, and Pocket Computers. This technological context imposes new challenges in user interface software engineering. as it must run on different computing platforms accommodating the capabilities of various devices and the different contexts of use. Challenges are triggered also because of the universal access requirements for a diversity of users. The existing approaches of designing a single user interface using one computing platform do not adequately address the challenges of diversity, cross-platform consistency, universal accessibility and integration. Therefore, there is an urgent need for a new integrative framework for modeling, designing and evaluating multi-device user interfaces for the emerging generation of interactive systems. This paper begins by describing a set of constraints and characteristics intrinsic to multi-device user interfaces, and then by examining the impacts of these constraints on the specification, design and validation processes. Then, it discusses the research opportunities in important topics relevant to multi-device user interface development, including task and model-based, pattern-driven and device-independent development. We will highlight how research in these topics can contribute to the emergence of an integrative framework for Multiple-User Interface design and validation. (C) 2003 Elsevier Inc. Teaching medical students about the anatomical principles of surgical procedures is a challenging task. In an effort to design a new tool that allows a third year medical student to explore specific surgical problems, the New York University School of Medicine Department of Surgery and the New York University School of Medicine Advanced Educational Systems lab collaborated to develop a Virtual Surgery Patient (VSP). The VSP is a realistic set of three-dimensional models of human anatomy. Unlike previous applications, our objective was to create lightweight 3-D models with the inherent ability to deform smoothly upon animation, with an architecture that allowed for enhanced texturing as well as polygon reduction. We developed a technique for using reconstructed volume data from the Visible human Project to create surface models that were easy to manipulate, avoiding artifacts introduced when resurrecting volumes from cadaveric sliced stacks. Surface shading can be used to give the models the appearance of living tissue, as well as allow for enhancements sometimes necessary to achieve an educational goal.

Operator fatigue and time-of-day induced variations in cognitive effectiveness can lead to lapses in attention, slowed reactions, and impaired reasoning and decision-making that has been shown to contribute to accidents, incidents and errors in a host of industrial and military settings. During the past three years, the US Air Force has sponsored the development of a model of human fatigue and circadian variation and a scheduling tool based upon the model that will be used to minimize aircrew fatigue. The initial test version of the tool has passed review by the operational wings of the AF and a final operational product is in advanced development and validation. The software was developed by SAIC and NTI and is called the Fatigue Avoidance Scheduling Tool (FAST™). This fatigue forecasting system is being developed and tested by NTI under a small business innovative research (SBIR) grant from the US Air Force, now in the third year of a three-year program. Fatigue predictions are derived from the Sleep, Activity, Fatigue, and Task Effectiveness (SAFTE™) model invented by Dr. Steven Hursh of SAIC. The patented SAFTE™ model has received a broad scientific review and the DoD considers it the most complete, accurate, and operationally practical model currently available to aid operator scheduling. The Department of Transportation is in the second phase of a three-phase project to validate and calibrate the model for avoiding excessive fatigue in transportation operations. The FAST scheduling tool uses the model to compare schedules in terms of predicted performance effectiveness. FAST allows easy entry of proposed schedules and generates graphical predictions of performance along with tables of estimated effectiveness scores for objective comparison. Optimal schedules may be selected based on average effectiveness for proposed work periods or mission critical events. Signal integrity (SI) analysis of printed circuit boards for high-speed digital design requires information on the perunit-length R, L, G, C parameters of the transmission lines. However, these are not always available when the property of the dielectric medium used in the board is unknown. A method to extract R, L, G, and C parameters from parallel-plate and strip transmission line geometries is proposed. It is based on measured scattering parameters and analytical modeling. A genetic algorithm (GA) is used to optimize the extraction by minimizing the frequency domain discrepancy between an objective function, which is the measured scattering matrix parameter, |S21|, and a GA model based on transmission line theory. The extracted R, L, G, and C parameters are then used in a SPICE model for simulation. Good agreement has been achieved in the reported results.

In this paper we examine how a network processor can be modeled using object-oriented techniques. We examine the Intel IXP 1200 network processor and discuss how the object-oriented language POOSL was utilized to allow an evaluation of a system before implementing it with hardware and software components. With the case study of the IXP 1200, we illustrate the suitability of object-oriented languages for system level modeling and design exploration.

Biodegradable polymers are employed in medicine and its further application is expected with eagerness. But the lack of an appropriate processing method retards the progress. To overcome this problem, we have developped a novel three-dimensional microfabrication system. The system design allows us the processing of the free three-dimensional micro-level forms by stacking up melted polymers from the nozzle. Different from the conventional method, we adopted a batch process to supply materials in order to eliminate the prior process that required toxic solvents. In addition, it is possible to handle almost all biodegradable thermoplastic resins by adopting this system. A single layer from the piled-up layers of extruded lines was observed to evaluate the resolution. The lateral and depth resolutions attained are 40 mu m and 45 mu m, respectively. Biodegradable polymers enable three-dimensional microstructures such as micro-pipes, microbends, and micro-coil springs to be manufactured in less than 15 min. The biocompatibility of the newly fabricated structure was evaluated using a cell line (PC12). For this purpose, a small vessel, with a transparent base, was fabricated using PLA and cells were cultivated in it. The results were then compared with the results obtained using the standard method. Our system renders it possible to produce toxic-free, as well as transparent and leakage-free devices. Our system is expected to have potential applications in optimum design and fabrication of implantable devices, especially in tissue engineering.

This paper summarizes the results of the suitability review on the reliability analysis for the digital Plant Protection System (DPPS) that were performed during the operation license for Ulchin NPP units 5 and 6. The DPPS is the first fully digitalized protection system of their kind in Korea. The reliability analysis was performed by the system designer, Westinghouse Electric Company (WEC), using, mainly, the fault tree analysis (FTA) along with failure modes and effect analysis (FMEA). During the suitability review process, licensee performed again the reliability analysis to correct for some shortcomings, such as insufficient fault tree configuration, inadequate component failure data, and inconsistent modeling method of common mode failure, identified by Korea Institute of Nuclear Safety (KINS). The result of this second round of reliability analysis was compared with analog PPS reliability of System 80. The comparison of the digital and analog PPS design showed that the reliability of digital PPS was slightly worse than that of analog PPS. So, an LCL DO Module Test was newly suggested and adapted to improve the reliability of DPPS, and then the reliability was analyzed again to reflect the new test feature. The result of this third round of reliability analysis showed that the reliability of digital PPS is actually better than that of analog PPS. Through these rigorous review processes, we were finally assured that the DPPS of Ulchin units 5 and 6 had an acceptable level of reliability.
