According to NASA, any person with physical characteristics that are between those of a 5th percentile Japanese female and a 95 th percentile American male shall be eligible to become an astronaut. Because of this guideline, pathways and workspaces within a space vehicle must accommodate a wide range of population. Unfortunately, there is often a shortage of space inside the space vehicle. Hence, designers try to maximize the use of space. One way to accomplish this is by finding the minimum volumetric requirement that would ensure safety and comfort for the crewmembers. Until now, static, uni-variate anthropometric data were used to derive these guidelines. Our concern is that they may misrepresent the dynamic postural variations of the crew onboard the space vehicle. We used a posture based whole-body anthropometric approach to determine the variation in the three different clearances and updated the design guidelines accordingly.
digital image processing algorithms are a good match for direct implementation on FPGAs as current FPGA architectures can naturally match the fine grain parallelism in these applications. Typically, these algorithms a...

River2D, a two-dimensional hydrodynamic model, was used to illustrate its potential as a restoration design tool for high-flow habitat in low-gradient Midwest streams. High-flow habitat consists of geomorphic features associated with specific hydraulic conditions during flooding. Habitat units include the high-velocity thalweg, and low-velocity lateral areas such as floodplain platforms, heavily vegetated margins, and morphologies that create hydraulic recirculation zones (HRZs). HRZs form by flow deflection at sharp bends and instream structures (deflection eddy), or result from abrupt expansion of the channel width (expansion eddy). Low-velocity habitat units, in particular HRZs, are important areas for fish refugia and should be incorporated into restoration designs. On a 3rd order, meandering stream in East-central Illinois, the River2D model successfully predicted HRZ locations at different channel morphologies and under varying flow stages. River2D was then used to demonstrate it's utility as a restoration design tool in a channelized straight reach by modeling the change in local hydraulics associated with two channel modifications. design of these channel modifications was based on ecological criteria to create HRZs for fish refugia. They included a bank deflector with an adjacent pool laterally located in the bed, and a lateral expansion of the channel with an elevated floodplain platform. This modeling exercise provided an example of an ecologically-based approach for designing habitat structures, and emphasized the value of using a 2D hydrodynamic model in stream restoration designs, particularly for use in streams morphologically degraded by human land use practices.
For the development of sophisticated digital (e.g., Finite-Element-models like CASIMIR) or physical (e.g.,ASPECT-Dummy) models of the mechanisms of human-seat-interaction it is very important to know the shape of the ...

We have developed an empirical method to model bioresponse to the surfaces of biodegradable polymers in a combinatorial library using Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) in conjunction with molecular modeling and machine learning methodology. We validated the procedure by modelinghuman fibrinogen adsorption to 22 structurally distinct polymers. Subsequently, the method was used to model the more complicated phenomena of rat lung fibroblast and normal human fetal foreskin fibroblast proliferation in the presence of 24 and 44 different polymers, respectively. In each case, the root mean square (rms) percent error of the prediction was substantially less than the experimental variation, showing that the models can distinguish high and low performing polymers based on structure/property information. Using this method to screen candidate materials in terms of specific bioresponse prior to extensive experimental testing will greatly facilitate materials development for biomedical applications.

The object-oriented modeling of interactive multimedia applications in the OMMMA approach is designed to enable multimedia software developers to create comprehensive analysis and design models of multimedia software. For development of highly usable multimedia applications, this approach must be embedded in a more holistic development process that takes a user-oriented perspective on multimedia software development. In this paper, we elaborate on the differences between user-centred design activities and object-oriented software design activities and outline their integration in a comprehensive development process.

With a number of 3-D scanners now available commercially, little work has been done to directly compare their capabilities. This study was designed to characterize differences between the Vitronic Vitus Pro scanner owned by TNO in the Netherlands and the Cyberware WB4 scanner owned by AFRL/HECP at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. For the purpose of the study, the Cyberware scanner was transported to the TNO facility in the Netherlands. Ten male and ten female subjects were scanned three times in each of three poses in both scanners. All scans for a subject were taken in one session. 3-D image data were segmented, aligned and compared using a difference mapping algorithm. The Cyberware scanner yielded useable data for all twenty subjects;however, the scans from the Vitronics scanner were of higher resolution. This method can be used to compare scanners or poses.
