This paper presents a comparison of word length determination procedures. It is realized using an automated testbed that exploits a C/C++ fixed-point simulation utility to model the impact of finite word length on overall accuracy. Word length determination procedures find a combination of optimum bit resolutions by computing dissimilarities between fixed-point and floating-point simulation results. The comparison helps to select a procedure that minimizes these dissimilarities and finds an optimal combination of word lengths that meet user specified objectives, in a minimum number of iterations and hardware cost. This comparison was applied on various DSP algorithms.

Speech recognition in noise environment is always inefficient for hearing-impaired people who wear hearing aids. Many noise cancellations have been proposed and studied for such an issue. In this paper, we designed a prototype of hearing instrument coupler to imitate the equivalent volume of the human ear, and built a feedforward active noise cancellation system (FANCs) that had the algorithm implemented with a digital signal processor (DSP) controller. The hearing instrument coupler is used to study the FANCs efficiency applied to real hearing aids. It is a chamber with an effective volume of 2cc specified by International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) standard. The FANCs includes a reference microphone, an error microphone, a canceling loudspeaker and a DSP controller. The results show that the hearing instrument coupler could simulate an ear with hearing aid, and the FANCs could suppress the unwanted noise effectively to enhance speech recognition.

The main objective of the research contribution presented in this paper was to enhance the usability of digital kinetic human models in the context of virtual prototyping and human-machine system simulation when the situation is dynamic. Main tasks were applying and evaluating two commercial digitalhuman models, creating own digital kinetic human model, connecting ergonomic and safety analysis methods to system. The goal of the VTT Automation's research contribution was to enhance the digitalhuman model in the concurrent design context both in a direct contact with the machine manufacturer or using a product development portal as contact interface. This includes the development of participating team-based concurrent engineering and integration of digitalhuman model to the human-machine simulation, too.

Virtual Environments (VEs) have the potential to revolutionize traditional product design by enabling the transition from conventional computer-aided design (CAD) to fully digital product development. This dissertation describes a design environment that provides an intuitive human-machine interface for the creation and manipulation of three-dimensional (3D) models in a semi-immersive design space. The prototype system that was developed targets closing the “digital gap” introduced by the need for physical models such as clay models or mockups in the traditional product design and evaluation cycle. The system provides a high precision engineeringdesign and modeling environment, supporting intuitive and efficient design tools for both designers and CAD engineers. The challenges that must be addressed and the concepts and components that were developed are described.
