The demands of embedded sensing for miniaturization and low power consumption require the development of integrated mixed signal solutions to bring the wealth of analog sensing to the digital networked world. Through the design and fabrication of a 4-20 mA receiver to Serial Peripheral Interface chip, design methods and the space for improvement will be explored.

Multimedia environment refers to the man machine interface between industrial operators and a product lifecycle system. This interface is used to design and operate engineering models during product development and to monitor ground operators who apply instruction sheets. The paper is focused on complex products, where digital mock-up is a key component of the engineering model. It gives an overview of present practices and applied research about digital mock-up. Haptic and large display devices are examined as potential improvement to operate with digital mock-up. It concludes with the necessity to move from a digital mock-up centered vision toward an engineering model centered vision to take full advantage of multimedia environments.

We discuss how a CASE-tool supporting the Unified modeling Language (UML) can be customized and extended using a visual scripting mechanism. We introduce a set of UML model operations that can be used, for example, to transform a UML diagram of one type into another, and to perform set theoretical operations on them. We discuss a visual scripting mechanism that can be used for executing these operations and for combining them to construct new operations with higher-level functionality. The visual scripting mechanism allows the automation of often-repeated software engineering tasks. We present examples of using the proposed techniques in UML based software engineering. We have a prototype implementation integrated to a real world UML modeling tool, the Nokia TED. The aim of this paper is to show how model operations can be exploited to perform interesting model analysis tasks, and how a visual language that uses these operations as primitives may be used for composing useful high-level functions for various software engineering purposes.

This paper presents the Ptolemy II framework that supports the visual modeling and design of heterogeneous systems. Models in this framework are structured as hierarchical clustered graphs. The framework provides the infrastructure to support the implementation of a variety of models of computation as domains. Heterogeneous systems are modeled by hierarchically combining different domains. We describe the implementation of the *charts formalism (a generalization of Statecharts) in Ptolemy II as an illustration of the flexibility of this approach.

Based on finite-state automata (FSA) and equivalent regular expressions, the paper introduces a holistic view of fault modeling that can be carried out as a complementary step to system modeling, revealing much rationalization potential. Appropriate formal notions will be used to introduce efficient algorithms to systematically generate and select test cases. The completeness of the test can be determined exploiting the link coverage of the state transition diagram of the FSA that models both the desired and undesired behavior of the system under test; this enables a precise scalability of the test and analysis process, leading to a better cost-effectiveness The elements of the approach will be narrated by realistic examples which will be used also to validate the approach.

We introduce the foundation of a system modeling environment targeted at capturing the anticipated interactions of hardware and software behaviors-not just their co-execution. Key to our approach is the separation of external and internal design testbenches. We use a frequency interleaved scheduling foundation ideally suited to our approach because it allows unrestricted hardware and software modeling, a mix of untimed and timed software, and a layered approach using software schedulers and protocols to resolve software to resource time budgets. We illustrate our approach by discussing how architectural corner cases that arise due to interacting hardware and software behaviors can be a meaningful digitalmodeling concept. In addition to characterizing the response of a system when viewed as a black box, we characterize the response of the design to anticipated design changes. We include examples and simulation results.

Presents an approach to intelligent interface design in virtual assembly. It uses a domain model to represent the activities of mechanical assembly, and a user model to capture the goals of user actions. The design also includes an interaction model to make inferences from the two models for the rendering of artificial guidance and evaluation of assembly plans. A neural network inspired from biological neural systems plays an important role in handling the real-time requirement of virtual assembly. Simulation studies demonstrate the advantages intelligent interface technology brings to human/computer interaction in practical applications.

A VHDL-AMS model of a passive pixel sensor (PPS) for large area digital imaging is presented based on a highly accurate model for the leakage regime of an a-Si:H TFT. We consider, as examples, various diagnostic medical imaging modalities, whose requirements are translated into PPS circuit parameters such as pixel capacitance and input charge. Selected simulation results are presented which illustrate sensor output linearity, pixel readout time as well as the effect of pixel and integration capacitor sizes on output rise time. The flexibility and speed of the presented VHDL-AMS models can expedite accurate simulations for the design of large area digital imaging PPS arrays.

Solid models are the critical data elements in modern computer-aided design (CAD) environments, describing the shape and form of manufactured artifacts. Their growing ubiquity has created new problems in how to effectively manage the many models that are now stored in the digital libraries of large design and manufacturing enterprises. Existing techniques from the engineering literature and from industrial practice, such as group technology, rely on human-supervised encoding and classification, while techniques from the multimedia database and computer graphics/vision communities often ignore the manufacturing attributes most significant in the classification of models. This paper presents our approach to the manufacturing similarly assessment of solid models of mechanical parts based on machining features. Our technical approach is three-fold: (1) perform machining feature extraction to map the solid model to a set of STEP AP 224 machining features; (2) construct a model dependency graph from the set of machining features; and (3) find the nearest neighbors to the query graph using an iterative improvement search across a database of other models. We also present empirical experiments to validate our approach using our testbed, the National design Repository ( ). The contribution of this research is the first fully automated technique for machining feature-based comparisons of mechanical artifacts. We believe that this work can lead to radical changes in the way in which design data is managed in modern engineering enterprises.
