More and more, digitalhumanmodeling and simulation is being used in conjunction with CAD systems to address ergonomic issues early within the development and manufacturing process. However, purchasing a humanmodeling software package does not guarantee a user-centered design anymore than purchasing a word processor makes someone an author. This paper addresses some of the practical issues that confront humanmodeling and simulation users, including the collection of geometry, posturing the manikin, and selection of an analysis. For the purposes of discussion, human simulation will be divided into three broad areas: the environment, manikin selection, and analysis.

The challenges to evaluate human related issues relevant to the designs within the digital environments are discussed. From the original concept, through design, manufacturability analysis, process simulation and service, the early analysis of humans interacting with the proposed designs is a requirement to achieve the efficiencies afforded by the new digital technologies. As comtemporary human models are integrated into this digitaldesign process, the sophistication of the ergonomic questions that are asked of these models is rapidly increasing. The use of human models over a wide range of applications, from the analysis of seated humans, to ability to predict movement in manufacturing environment has been explored.

Manufacturers are forced to reduce the time-to-market for their products. A short and effective engineering process requires the support of concurrent engineering, a common database for all planning-relevant data and a compatible systems landscape. This is our vision of the digital Factory. One important aspect of manufacturing is the optimal use of a human workforce. digital Factory applications with 3D human models enable engineers to plan and optimize human tasks. These tools are used to design workplaces, perform ergonomic and time studies and document the results. This paper presents the basic design and the simulation of a low level multi-layer vision processor that emulates to some degree the functional behavior of a human retina. This retina-like multi-layer processor is the lower part of an autonomous self-organized vision system, called Kydon, which could be used on visually impaired people with a damaged visual cerebral cortex. The retina-like processor consists of four major layers, where each is an array processor that performs a certain set of low level vision tasks, such as smoothing and light adaptation, edge detection, segmentation, line recognition and region-graph generation. At each layer the array processor is a 2-D array of kxm hexagonal identical autonomous cells that simultaneously execute certain tasks. Thus, in this paper the hardware design and the entire simulation of the retina-like processor with illustrative examples are provided.
