The physiome is the quantitative description of the functioning organism in normal and pathophysiological states. The human physiome can be regarded as the virtual human. It is built upon the morpheme, the quantitative description of anatomical structure, chemical and biochemical composition, and material properties of an intact organism, including its genome, proteome, cell, tissue, and organ structures up to those of the whole intact being. The Physiome Project is a multicentric integrated program to design, develop, implement, test and document, archive and disseminate quantitative information, and integrative models of the functional behavior of molecules, organelles, cells, tissues, organs, and intact organisms from bacteria to man. A fundamental and major feature of the project is the databasing of experimental observations for retrieval and evaluation. Technologies allowing many groups to work together are being rapidly developed. Internet II will facilitate this immensely. When problems are huge and complex, a particular working group can be expert in only a small part of the overall project. The strategies to be worked out must therefore include how to pull models composed of many submodules together even when the expertise in each is scattered amongst diverse institutions. The technologies of bioinformatics will contribute greatly to this effort. Developing and implementing code for large-scale systems has many problems. Most of the submodules are complex, requiring consideration of spatial and temporal events and processes. Submodules have to be linked to one another in a way that preserves mass balance and gives an accurate representation of variables in nonlinear complex biochemical networks with many signaling and controlling pathways. Microcompartmentalization vitiates the use of simplified model structures. The stiffness of the systems of equations is computationally costly. Faster computation is needed when using models as thinking tools and for iter

The proceedings contain 30 papers. The topics discussed include: interactive reconstruction of virtual environments from photographs, with application to scene-of-crime analysis;interactive 3D modeling using only one image;hybrid method of image synthesis in IBR for novel viewpoints;a framework for rapid evaluation of prototypes with augmented reality;an immersive modeling system for 3D free-form design using implicit surfaces;conceptual free-form styling on the responsive workbench;and multi-resolution spatial model for large-scale virtual environment.
In this study, an angle-time-based motion modification method was developed. This method allows the use of existing motion data by modifying them to fit new scenarios given as new initial and final posture constraints...

human performance modeling (HPM) tools have recently been developed to accurately predict human workload and environmental performance associated with procedural changes. Often, these changes have unforeseen human performance effects. One such procedural rule change is the concept of mature free flight expected by the year 2025. Free flight is a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) system capacity strategic goal aimed at reducing flight times, crew resources, maintenance, and fuel costs by reducing rigid airway structures and in-trail spacing. An evaluation of predicted workload effects and aircraft performance associated with current day and free flight operations was performed using two integrated human performance models, Air Man-machine Integration design and Analysis System (Air MIDAS) and the Integrated Performance modeling Environment (IPME). In analyses of a common scenario, both tools revealed increases in workload from current day to free flight operations, however the models provided different performance profile predictions depending on the operator's role in the system change. These differences were in the components that made up the overall workload predictions. Some contextual evidence suggested that the proximity of the aircraft as measured by the Closest Point of Approach (CPA) did not impact workload of the simulated operators as demonstrated by the simulated CPA distances under current day operations as compared with free flight operations. This provides evidence that more focus needs to be brought to the effects of context on the workload of the virtual human operator of the National Airspace System (NAS). A validation effort of these contextual findings with human-in-the-loop data is anticipated and required prior to drawing any definite conclusions.
A way to calculate representative forms from given set of forms was developed, in which surface data is modeled by polygons based on landmarks. Inter-individual distances are defined as distortions in FFD control poin...

Intense competition and rapid environmental changes are revealing severe limitations in the effectiveness of the hierarchical, stable and Tayloristic management system currently used by the vast majority of batch manufacturing industries. A project-oriented enterprise model of batch plants which results of integrating together systems thinking and functional modeling is proposed here. The latter refers to the set of intents and relationships between goals, functions and components (both physical and abstract) that comprise an analytical viewpoint of batch processes involving product recipes, equipment capabilities, constraints and human competencies (skills and knowledge). Complementarily, the systemic perspective accounts for the organizational setting (roles, objectives and actors), and provides an orthogonal view through the duality of whole-parts relationships and the ubiquitous concepts of boundary, emergence and hierarchy upon which the project-oriented enterprise model is built. A case study that comprises a dairy facility involving the production +100 different fresh products using an order-driven management system will be presented. To support the prototype implementation of a plant information system using a hierarchy of project-based objects, a conceptual design has been developed. The implementation of the resulting enterprise model in Project 98(TM) will be discussed to highlight its easy and cheap implementation, and a number of advantages including: accumulation of information and knowledge, direct tracing of activities and cost analysis.
