While searching for a methodology to allow the use of C++ as a universal design language, or UDL, while incorporating available VHDL implementations, it became clear that an object oriented design environment was needed. To facilitate this complex transition an environment called VHDL Interfacing Object-Oriented Languages (VIOOL) has been treated. VIOOL is a tool suite that allows the system designer (user) to model and simulate a complete system (i.e., hardware and software) in C++. VIOOL enables users to make tradeoffs in the hardware or software of a system based on performance information. The input to VIOOL is a hardware configuration (usually a processor model) described in VHDL, and the software written that is supposed to run on that hardware in C++. VIOOL is targeted towards application specific signal processor (ASSP) and digital signal processor (DSP) developers. Preliminary results show the feasibility of this approach.

In this paper, we present a design of a digital dynamic fuzzifier based on successive approximation. It is suitable for on-line training or on-line adaptive fuzzy control systems. With the parameters of the triangle or trapezoid membership functions and the number to be fuzzified as the inputs, it automatically calculated the proper membership values for the fuzzy control systems. The chip is designed with a standard cell approach and implemented in the MOSIS CMOS 2 /spl mu/m technology. For 4-bit inputs, there are 1,744 transistors in the chip and the size of the chip is 1,515 /spl mu/m by 1,088 /spl mu/m. From the hspice simulation results with 4-bit numbers as inputs, the maximum delay is 30 ns for a two-bit output.

Real-time scheduling theory attempts to guarantee that a real-time task set always meets its deadlines. Historically, there has existed a wide gap between real-time scheduling theory and the reality of applying the theory to task sets implemented via real-time operating systems (RTOSs). The paper provides a framework to account for implementation costs in real-time scheduling theory. In addition, an engineering methodology that allows users and developers to accurately model and evaluate RTOSs is presented. We use this methodology to model three different commercial real-time operating systems that are being used in multimedia applications. We show how to use the RTOS scheduling models to evaluate the performance and design of RTOSs.

Due to the high frequencies of analog and/or digital signals and a high package density on Printed Circuit Boards (PCB), problems occur concerning reflection, crosstalk, radiation, and irradiation. New design methods have to consider the analysis of the expected radiation behaviour already during the design-phases of a PCB. If violations of the legal requirements (FCC, CISPR, VDE 0871-B, etc.) could be recognised at this stage, they can be removed at low costs. Furthermore, the design cycle of prototyping PCB or electronic systems can be reduced. In this paper some design problems in particular with respect to radiation effects and their detection using an extended EMC-Workbench will be discussed. The integration of the radiation tool, the Method of Moments solver COMORAN (COMputation Of RAdiatioN) into an EMC-Workbench is described.

Embedded DSP applications are characterized by the presence of a dedicated DSP processor and application specific software that runs on it. Energy consumption is increasingly becoming a critical design constraint for such applications. This necessitates the analysis and optimization of the energy consumption of the software component of these systems. This paper investigates an energy optimization technique in this regard. It involves the problem of allocating memory to variables in embedded DSP software to maximize simultaneous data transfers from different memory banks to registers. A memory allocation technique based on simulated annealing is proposed. Experimental results for example DSP programs demonstrate that energy reductions of upto 47% can be achieved by this approach.

The Sea Water Lift Pump (SLP) system is responsible for maintaining the open canal level to provide the suction flow of Circulating Water Pump (CWP) at the set point. The response of the SLP system is so slow that it is difficult to maintain an optimal open canal level by manual or two step pump speed control operation and to reduce overflow of seawater. The objective of this paper is to apply the fuzzy control method, which can utilize the flexibility and the heuristic operation strategy employed by operators, to SLP system in fossil fired power plant. In order to verify a proposed fuzzy system, we developed simplified models such as mathematical model of SLP, CWP, seawater level and intake canal. The result of the simulation test shows that the proposed fuzzy control method can reflect successfully the experience gained in skilled manual operation. It is expected that the fuzzy control can contribute to the reduction of power consumption of SLP, human error and man power, and to the improvment of the reliability and safety of the plant operation.

An ICAI (Intelligent Computer Aided Instruction) to teach how to diagnose epilepsy was developed at the GPEB (Biomedical engineering Research Group), using the object oriented and multiagents society (MAS) paradigms. The integrated agents in the system are: expert agent, tutor agent, student's model agent, interface agent and communication agent. Every agent is represented by an object class. Here a human like analogy is followed and in this case the object is composed of three parts: mouth, body and head. The mouth makes the communication with the others agents. The body is the agent's part dealing with the problem resolution and the head controls the cooperation with others agents. The paper presents the system's design and implementation aspects.

Recently, considerable attention has been focussed on the design and implementation of satellite networks capable of providing world-wide telecommunications coverage. Naturally, an integral component of these systems is the portable transceiver handset which allows convenient communication at any remote location. When designing handsets for use in satellite-based systems one technical challenge is the requirement of supplying an antenna which provides circularly polarized radiation over a broad angular range. Novel antenna designs, such as the microstrip patch antenna presented in this paper, must be designed and evaluated if good engineering solutions are to be found. A key consideration in the evaluation of antennas for transceiver handsets is the effect of the operator's biological tissue on the antenna radiation performance. This is particularly true for circularly polarized antennas for satellite networks, where the pattern polarization and shape characteristics may be of critical importance. Therefore, this paper uses a previously reported electromagnetic simulation tool based upon the finite difference time-domain (FDTD) algorithm to study the effect of the human body on the handset-mounted circularly polarized patch antenna. Within the FDTD methodology, detailed models of the head and hand are combined with a real-life model of the antenna on the handset to allow investigation of the antenna performance when it radiates in its true operating environment.

A new multistage adaptive robust (MAR) algorithm combined with a multiresolution coarse to fine matching model is developed for robust stereo analysis. Stereo analysis of remotely sensed images is useful for a variety of applications including cloud height measurement and digital terrain models. Time sequential stereoscopic observations of clouds from meteorological satellites provide a basic analysis tool for a broad spectrum of applications including numerical weather prediction, cloud modeling, and global climate understanding. A two step robust stereo analysis algorithm is developed and applied to the satellite based cloud height estimation problem. The first step involves estimating initial disparities (depth map or height field) provided by a hierarchical coarse to fine stereo analysis algorithm that uses regularization and image warping. For the second step the matching model using to derive robust estimators is described, followed by a description of the multi stage robust estimation process for handling outliers and irregularities in the initial stereo disparity field. The incorporation of a multistage robust statistical process using a general matching model leads to improved performance.

The CERN Research and Development project (RD-38), named CICERO, aims to identify and design the main building blocks of a generic control information system based on distributed objects. The project is producing an integrating framework (named Cortex) into which user real-time control objects will ultimately be plugged (and played) and a control information system to support its configuration and management. Development of Cortex is following the ESA PSS-05-02 software engineering standards. Cortex is providing an environment which allows real-time control systems to share information, control and analysis functions which presents a uniform human interface; which permits upgrades and additions without code modification; and which is sufficiently generic to allow its use both by existing or future control systems at CERN and by industrial real time control systems. It provides both high level data access, abstracting objects to a level appropriate for on-line control and low level data access to allow views of experimental sub-components for detailed real-time control. Additionally, the Cortex system shall enable developers to grow their control systems from a lab-based test system to the complete experimental system and is therefore both scaleable and flexible to change. Technical solutions are being identified in CICERO which could later be the major components of a basic turnkey control system for future medium to large scale HEP experiments and accelerators as well as for industrial control systems. This paper outlines the modelling concepts behind Cortex.
