Three-dimensional (3D) video and imaging technologies is an emerging trend in the development of digital video systems, as we presently wit- ness the appearance of 3D displays, coding systems, and 3D camera se- tups. Three-dimensional multi-view video is typically obtained from a set of synchronized cameras, which are capturing the same scene from different viewpoints. This technique especially enables applications such as free- viewpoint video or 3D-TV. Free-viewpoint video applications provide the feature to interactively select and render a virtual viewpoint of the scene. A 3D experience such as for example in 3D-TV is obtained if the data rep- resentation and display enable to distinguish the relief of the scene, i. e., the depth within the scene. With 3D-TV, the depth of the scene can be perceived using a multi-view display that renders simultaneously several views of the same scene. To render these multiple views on a remote dis- play, an efficient transmission, and thus compression of the multi-view video is necessary. However, a major problem when dealing with multi- view video is the intrinsically large amount of data to be compressed, de- compressed and rendered. We aim at an efficient and flexible multi-view video system, and explore three different aspects. First, we develop an al- gorithm for acquiring a depth signal from a multi-view setup. Second, we present efficient 3D rendering algorithms for a multi-view signal. Third, we propose coding techniques for 3D multi-view signals, based on the use of an explicit depth signal. This motivates that the thesis is divided in three parts. The first part (Chapter3) addresses the problem of 3D multi-view video acquisition. Multi-view video acquisition refers to the task of estimating and recording a 3D geometric description of the scene. Recently we proposed a wavelet-based dynamic range compression algorithm to improve the visual quality of digital images captured in the high dynamic range scenes with non-uniform lighting conditions. The fast image enhancement algorithm which provides dynamic range compression preserving the local contrast and tonal rendition is a very good candidate in aerial imagery applications such as image interpretation for defense and security tasks. This algorithm can further be applied to video streaming for aviation safety. In this paper the latest version of the proposed algorithm which is able to enhance aerial images so that the enhanced images are better then direct human observation, is presented. The results obtained by applying the algorithm to numerous aerial images show strong robustness and high image quality.

Visual media is growing massively at a rapid pace. This is due to the advancement of broadband networks/Internet, DSP/media processors and VLSI technology. Application areas include high definition television, multimedia communications and teleconferencing. Despite rapid increase in mass storage density, processor speeds, and digital communication data rates, the demand for visual data storage and visual data transmission bandwidth continues to surpass the capabilities of available technologies. Hence, there have been increasing efforts to develop reliable visual data compression techniques that provide a cost effective solution for the storage and transmission of visual data. The recent MPEG 4 and JPEG 2000 standards address the need for content based compression, coding and manipulation of visual media. With the evolution and inexpensiveness of hardware programmable devices such as field programmable gate arrays (FPGA's), the implementation and realization of different image and video coding algorithms has become possible and affordable in many of the visual data communication and storage industries, such as digital TV receivers, mobile devices and Internet communications servers.

As new displays and cameras offer enhanced color capabilities, there is a need to extend the precision of digital content. High Dynamic Range (HDR) imaging encodes images and video with higher than normal 8 bit-per-color-channel precision, enabling representation of the complete color gamut and the full visible range of ***, to realize transition from the traditional toHDRimaging, it is necessary to develop imaging algorithms that work with the high-precision data. Tomake such algorithms effective and feasible in practice, it is necessary to take advantage of the limitations of the human visual system by aligning the data shortcomings to those of the human eye, thus limiting storage and processing precision. Therefore, human visual perception is the key component of the solutions we discuss in this book. This book presents a complete pipeline forHDR image and video processing fromacquisition, through compression and quality evaluation, to display. At the HDR image and video acquisition stage specialized HDR sensors or multi-exposure techniques suitable for traditional cameras are discussed. Then, we present a practical solution for pixel values calibration in terms of photometric or radiometric quantities, which are required in some technically oriented applications. Also, we cover the problem of efficient image and video compression and encoding either for storage or transmission purposes, including the aspect of backward compatibility with existing formats. Finally, we review existing HDR display technologies and the associated problems of image contrast and brightness adjustment. For this purpose tone mapping is employed to accommodate HDR content to LDR devices. Conversely, the so-called inverse tone mapping is required to upgrade LDR content for displaying on HDR devices. The appeal of change detection methods for surveillance systems arises from the need to monitor perturbations in the sensor's field of view. Applications of change detection include satellite imagery, digital video compression algorithms, medical diagnosis, damage monitoring, and object tracking. The algorithm developed in this study is capable of extracting features from static background IR (infra-red) surveillance video by a spatio-temporal change detection frame work. Those features are then tracked by application of a similarity metric. The system is trained by observing the background for an extended period of time. The constructed background model helps the algorithm to detect non-stationary objects and extract their time-varying features such as motion and shape deformation. Spatial and spectral characteristics of these dynamic features enable the algorithm to identify targets of known nature and isolate them from the surrounding background cluttered by various objects and foreground.

The evolution of the communication and information technologies push the development of several communication media. These media, video in particular, need a large bandwidth to be transmitted, or a large digital storage capacity. Many multimedia signals show, however, a high information redundancy. By using compression techniques it is possible to reduce the amount of coded information by one or two orders of magnitude, keeping a satisfactory visual quality. One of these compression techniques searches the similarity between neighboring frames of a scene, identifying the temporal redundancy between them. This technique is called motion estimation, and it is a very efficient method for compression. However, the computational complexity of the motion estimation requires high performance algorithms in hardware, when used for real time compression of high resolution videos. This dissertation presents a comprehensive investigation about motion estimation algorithms, targeting a hardware implementation. All the investigated algorithms were first developed in C language and submitted to many evaluation tests. The algorithms were applied to ten video samples used by the scientific community for the evaluation of real application. The evaluation showed that fast algorithms can carry out the motion estimation process efficiently, producing good results in vectors quality, computational effort and performance. With the results analyses, the Diamond Search algorithm was chosen to be hardware designed, with two different levels of pixel subsampling, 2:1 and 4:1. The architectures for Diamond Search algorithm, with pixel subsampling of 2:1 and 4:1, were described in VHDL, synthesized to Xilinx Virtex-4 FPGAs and also to standard cells TSMC 0.18μm technology. The developed architectures have sufficient performance to process HDTV 1080p videos at 30 frames per second and demand small hardware resources consumption after synthesis to FPGA and ASIC. In this article, an embedded video capturing and compressing system provided with Web intelligent based on the high speed DSP and ARM is completed. Firstly, the composition of the whole capturing and compress system is introduced; secondly, the point is that it carries out the essential technologies of data pretreatment during the video capturing and compressing, three-frame ping-pong renovating control, seamless connection with two cores and embedded Web server. Lastly, the result of the whole compressing system is indicated. The versatility and the extension are considered in the design, so that the system is not only a video server, but a general video code platform to carry on the confirmation of several kinds of compressing algorithms.
