A hybrid compression method for integral images using discrete wavelet transform and discrete cosine transform

Integral imaging (II) is a promising three-dimensional (3-D) imaging technique that uses an array of diffractive or refractive optical elements to record the 3-D information on a conventional digital sensor. With II, the object information is recorded in the form of an array of subimages, each representing a slightly different perspective of the object In order to obtain high-quality 3-D images, digital sensors with a large number of pixels are required. Consequently, high-quality H involves recording and processing large amounts of data. In this paper, we present a compression method developed for the particular characteristics of the digitally recorded integral image. The compression algorithm is based on a hybrid technique implementing a four-dimensional transform combining the discrete wavelet transform and the discrete cosine transform. The proposed algorithm outperforms the baseline JPEG compression scheme applied to II and a previous compression method developed for It based on MPEG II.

In this paper, we propose a new stereoscopic video coding method aiming at efficient stereoscopic video compression over terrestrial digital multimedia broadcasting (T-DMB). The limited amount of bandwidth available to T-DMB network has a significant impact on the amount of information that it can transmit. In particular, to transmit stereoscopic video within the limited channel bandwidth of T-DMB, efficient compression of the visual information is required. One of the enabling technologies is stereoscopic coding which exploit spatial correlation between two views. In order to further improve coding efficiency of the stereoscopic video, a new compression algorithm downsampling residual data is proposed. Main idea of residual-downsampling algorithm is to reduce the resolution of residual data that consist of the differential values between original input image and predicted image and to code the downsampled residual data. Experimental results show the proposed method achieves efficient compression at lower bit rates than Simulcast.

In 1995, MPEG-2 became a video coding international standard. Since then, a wide variety of video compression LSIs have been developed and actually deployed in many applications such as digital HDTV broadcasting, TV conference, mobile and so forth. Since video coding technology is essential to the efficient storage and transmission of video data, it continues to play an important role in ubiquitous (anywhere, anytime, etc) and coming ambient (safe, comfortable, etc) information society. In this talk, I will provide video compression LSI technologies from past, present and future points of view.

The appeal of change detection methods for surveillance systems arises from the need to monitor perturbations in the sensorpsilas field of view. Applications of change detection include satellite imagery, digital video compression algorithms, medical diagnosis, damage monitoring, and object tracking. The algorithm developed in this study is capable of extracting features from static background IR (infra-red) surveillance video by a spatio-temporal change detection frame work. Those features are then tracked by application of a similarity metric. The system is trained by observing the background for an extended period of time. The constructed background model helps the algorithm to detect non-stationary objects and extract their time-varying features such as motion and shape deformation. Spatial and spectral characteristics of these dynamic features enable the algorithm to identify targets of known nature and isolate them from the surrounding background cluttered by various objects and foreground.

In recent decades, digital video and audio coding technologies have helped revolutionize the ways we create, deliver and consume audiovisual content. This is exemplified by digital television (DTV), which is emerging as a captivating new program and data broadcasting service. This paper provides an overview of the video and audio coding subsystems of the Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) DTV standard. We first review the motivation for data compression in digital broadcasting. The MPEG-2 video and AC-3 audio compression algorithms are described, with emphasis on basic concepts, system features, and coding performance. Next-generation video and audio codecs currently under consideration for advanced services are also presented.

The H.264 video coding standard is regarded as a new generation video standard due to better performance compared to other video coding standards. MEPEG-2 video standard has been adopted for digital broadcasting standards by which most digital video contents have been created. It will take several years to change current video market place from MPEG-2 to H.264 standard, because of the wide usage of MPEG-2 today. This creates an important need for transcoding technologies that convert the widely available MPEG-2 compressed videos to H.264 compressed videos. However, given the significant differences between the MPEG-2 and the H.264 encoding algorithms, the transcoding process of such systems is much more complex than other heterogeneous video transcoding processes. In this paper, we propose a new high speed transcoding architecture from MPEG-2 to H.264. In the proposed transcoding architecture, the most complex encoding functions are performed in the transform domain without converting to pixel domain. The experimental results show that the proposed architecture is faster than existing transcoding architectures.

Three dimensional (3D) video is attracting a lot of attention as a new multimedia representation method. 3D video is a sequence of 3D models (frames) that consist of varying vertices and connectivity. In conventional 2D video compression algorithms, motion compensation (MC) using block matching algorithm is frequently employed to reduce redundancy between consecutive frames. However, there is no such technology for 3D video so far. Therefore, in this paper, we have developed an extended block matching algorithm (EMBA) to reduce temporal redundancy of geometry information of 3D video by extending the idea of 2D block matching to 3D space. In our EBMA, a cubic block is used as a matching unit and, MC is achieved efficiently by matching the mean normal vectors of the sub-blocks, which turned out to be sub-optimal by our experiments. The residual information is further transformed by discrete cosine transform (DCT) and then encoded. The extracted motion vectors are also entropy encoded. As a result of our experiments, compression ratio ranging from 10% to 18% of the original 3D video data has been achieved.

In the last decade, as the demand of video transmission over communication network grows rapidly, the algorithms and technologies in video processing have significant improvement. In order to achieve good coding efficiency, the temporal and spatial redundancies in video are removed by compression schemes, such as motion compensated prediction and discrete cosine transform. On the other hand, these coding schemes make the encoded video very sensitive to the transmission error. Even single bit error in transmission may cause obvious degradation of video quality. To alleviate the effect of the transmission error, many error resilient algorithms have been developed. In this thesis, many popular error resilient algorithms have been studied, and several new error control methods are proposed for the new coding standard H.264, which supports many new video applications. There are three parts in the thesis. In Part I that includes Chapter 1 and 2, an introduction about the fundamentals of video coding is presented. The codec of H.263 is used as an example to illustrate how to compress the digital video into a bitstream. Then the new coding standard H.264 is introduced, since some new coding techniques are adopted in this coding standard. In Chapter 2, many efficient error resilient methods are reviewed. In Part II, several efficient error concealment methods developed for H.264 are presented. Error concealment is implemented in the decoder to alleviate the effect of transmission error. Spatial and temporal redundancies are often exploited to reconstruct the corrupted area of video. In Chapter 3, a maximally smooth error concealment method is formulated for the reconstruction of 4x4 block. The information of the blocks that are neighboring to the lost 4x4 block is used to approximate the pixel values of the lost 4x4 block. Real-time video images communication needs efficient implementation and optimization about the video compression algorithms on power-efficient platforms. To meet such needs several compression methodologies and techniques have been proposed and standardized. This paper presents the implementation details of H.264/AVC (the latest standard for video compression) encoder on ADSP-BF537 processor based Analog Devices BF537-STAMP board, and gives several optimization techniques which have been concurrently employed in this work to improve the performance of the encoder. In this paper, the improvement in performance has been evaluated for each optimization step and the results of the optimization demonstrate the potential of the low- power Micro-Signal Architecture of Blackfin processor as a good choice for next generation embedded multimedia applications.
