A video interpolation algorithm for spatio-temporal video pyramid coding is presented. The temporal and the spatial predictions of the present frame are interactively combined to produce the best prediction of the present frame. For this purpose, the temporal prediction error variance and the lower resolution image variance are measured and compared for each region. The proposed region-based video interpolator is shown to give visually correct predicted images by minimizing the spatial and the temporal prediction artifacts such as aliasing, uncovered background and blocking effect. Promising results are obtained for lossy compression.

This paper is primarily concerned with motion-compensated interpolation of video sequences using multiple images. Due to the extended temporal support of such motion compensation, linear (constant-velocity) trajectory model is often inappropriate, for example due to insufficient temporal sampling. Recently, we have proposed a quadratic (constant-acceleration) trajectory model and a framework for the computation of its parameters. The approach is based on Markov random field models that lead to a regularized formulation solved by multiresolution deterministic relaxation. In this paper, we demonstrate advantages of using accelerated motion over linear trajectories in a plausible application using natural data. We apply the estimated trajectories to motion-compensated interpolation over multiple frames of progressive and interlaced video sequences. The experimental results for `Miss America' and `Femme et arbre' (interlaced) show, respectively, a 4 and 2 dB average improvement in the PSNR of the reconstruction error when quadratic trajectories are used instead of the linear ones. It is interesting to note that in `Miss America' the most significant improvements can be observed in the area of the mouth and the eyes which are in fact likely to exhibit acceleration. We envisage an application of the proposed method to post-processing in very low bit rate video coding.

Stereoscopic image sequence transmission over existing monocular digital transmission channels, without seriously affecting the quality of one of the image streams, requires a very low bit-rate coding of the additional stream. Fixed block-size based disparity estimation schemes cannot achieve such low bit-rates without causing severe edge artifacts. Also, textureless regions lead to spurious matches which hampers the efficient coding of block disparities. In this paper, we propose a novel disparitybased segmentation approach, to achieve an efficient partition of the image into regions of more or less fixed disparity. The partitions are edge based, in order to minimize the edge artifacts after disparity compensation. The scheme leads to disparity discontinuity preserving, yet smoother and more accurate disparity fields than fixed block-size based schemes. The smoothness and the reduced number of block disparities lead to efficient coding of one image of a stereo pair given the other. The segmentation is achieved by performing a quadtree decomposition, with the disparity compensated error as the splitting criterion. The multiresolutional recursive decomposition offers a computationally efficient and non-iterative means of improving the disparity estimates while preserving the disparity discontinuities. The segmented regions can be tracked temporally to achieve very high compression ratios on a stereoscopic image stream. © 1995 SPIE. All rights reserved.

We describe a novel approach to filtering coded video data. MPEG video is filtered to reduce frame rate and bandwidth by dropping coded B-pictures. The choice of B-pictures to be dropped is made based on an 'activity measure' which indicates the amount of motion within the video scene. We present preliminary results which indicate that this method produces a filtered sequence with higher visual quality than a sequence produced by dropping B-pictures at regular intervals.

Massively parallel processing architectures have matured primarily through image processing and computer vision application. The similarity of processing requirements between these areas and video processing suggest that they should be very appropriate for video processing applications. This research describes the use of an associative massively parallel processing based system for video compression which includes architectural and system description, discussion of the implementation of compression tasks such as DCT/IDCT, Motion Estimation and Quantization and system evaluation. The core of the processing system is the ASP (Associative String Processor) architecture a modular massively parallel, programmable and inherently fault-tolerant fine-grain SIMD processing architecture incorporating a string of identical APEs (Associative Processing Elements), a reconfigurable inter-processor communication network and a Vector Data Buffer for fully-overlapped data input-output. For video compression applications a prototype system is developed, which is using ASP modules to implement the required compression tasks. This scheme leads to a linear speed up of the computation by simply adding more APEs to the modules.

Numerous attempts have been made to detect scene changes in video sequences and to treat scenes as units, to allow handling of very large amounts of video data. But less attention has been given to the structure of scenes themselves. In this study, we define a "sub-scene" as a structural component of a scene in terms of camera operations. In other words, sub-scenes are subsets of scenes, and consist of successive frames in which the movements of the contents are almost identical. The advantage of sub-dividing scenes into sub-scenes is that it gives added power to description of objects and motion information. Up to now, the mainstream of research on estimating camera operations has been frame-by-frame analysis: that is, most studies have evaluated the difference between the contents of two frames at a time, and estimated camera motions by analyzing such differences over a period. Though these techniques can estimate camera operations accurately, they are generally time-consuming and may be greatly affected by noise, such as unintentional movements of the cameraman's hands, in a few frames of a sequence. In order to describe sub-scenes, the estimation of camera operations need not be very accurate, but it must be resistant to noise. The technique proposed in this paper for extracting camera operations, which processes more than two frames at a time by using a two-dimensional spatio-temporal image, meets the above requirement. It is also faster than conventional frame-by-frame analysis. The results of experiments indicate that the technique is both feasible and useful. © 1994 SPIE. All rights reserved.

Multi-pass encoding is a technique employed in the field of video compression that maximizes the quality of an encoded video sequence within the constraints of a specified bit rate. This paper presents research where multi-pass encoding is extended to the field of hyperspectral image compression. Unlike video, which is primarily intended to be viewed by a human observer, hyperspectral imagery is processed by computational algorithms that generally attempt to classify the pixel spectra within the imagery. As such, these algorithms are more sensitive to distortion in the spectral dimension of the image than they are to perceptual distortion in the spatial dimension. The compression algorithm developed for this research, which uses the Karhunen-Loeve transform for spectral decorrelation followed by a modified H.264/Advanced video Coding (AVC) encoder, maintains a user-specified spectral quality level while maximizing the compression ratio throughout the encoding process. The compression performance may be considered near-lossless in certain scenarios. For qualitative purposes, this paper presents the performance of the compression algorithm for several Airborne Visible/Infrared Imaging Spectrometer (AVIRIS) and Hyperion datasets using spectral angle as the spectral quality assessment function. Specifically, the compression performance is illustrated in the form of rate-distortion curves that plot spectral angle versus bits per pixel per band (bpppb).

In the paper we are concerned with the efficient coding of image sequences for video- conference applications. In such sequences, large image regions usually undergo a uniform translational motion. Consequently, to maximize the coding efficiency and quality, the codec should be able to segment and estimate multiple translational motions accurately and reliably. Following the above premise, we propose an algorithm which combines several known and new techniques. Firstly, a traditional variable block size motion compensation was used, but employing a novel robust motion estimation algorithm. The algorithm can estimate multiple motions to a sub-pixel accuracy and also provides a reliable motion segmentation. Whenever there exist multiple motions within a block, the motion boundary is recovered and approximated by a straight line. Also, an inter-block motion prediction is used to achieve a further improvement of the compression ratio. A comparison with the H.261 scheme shows that the proposed algorithm produces better results both in terms of PSNR and bit-rate. To judge the contribution of the motion segmentation to the overall performance, experiments have been carried out with a variant of the algorithm where only single motion within any block is allowed. This incapacitated variant emulates a commonly used approach for variable block size coding. The comparison of the proposed and incapacitated variants shows that the use of motion segmentation can lower the bit rate and deliver a better visual quality of the reconstructed image sequence.

Assessing and comparing the performance of watermarking algorithms is difficult. The visibility of the watermark is an important aspect in this process. In this paper, we propose two metrics for evaluating the visual impact of video watermarks. Based on several different watermarking algorithms and video sequences, we identify the most prominent impairments as spatial noise and temporal flicker. We design the corresponding measurement algorithms and corroborate their performance through subjective experiments.
