Error detection algorithm for MPEG-2 video

The transmission errors in NWEG-2 may propagate in the temporal direction. The error in intracoded picture (I-frame) will propagate into the associated P-B frame if they are in the same Group Of Picture (GOP). Therefore it is important to detect the error in I-frame rather than in the P-B frame. This paper has proposed and implemented a new Error Detection (ED) algorithm based on Statistical Parity Pair Embedding (SPPE). The SPPE can locate errors in the compressed I-frame bit stream. The SPPE is based on the digital watermark embedding technique. This SPPE algorithm is proven to have better performance than other traditional algorithms, and is very suitable for use in multipoint communications.

With the developments of digital multimedia technologies, MPEG-2 to H.264 transcoding will become universal requirements in various applications. Compared with MPEG-2, H.264 uses some new compressing methods. One of these methods is intra prediction. This paper proposed some intra prediction mode decision algorithms for MPEG-2 to H.264 transcoding. In our experiments, the suggested fast mode decision method is compared with H.264 JM10.1, results show that our algorithm can reduce the computation while maintaining similar PSNR performance

This article attempts to identify some of the technology and research challenges facing the digital media industry in the future. We first discuss several trends in the industry, such as the rapid growth of broadband Internet networks and the emergence of networking and media-capable devices in the home. Next, we present technical challenges that result from these trends, such us effective media interoperability in devices, and provide a brief overview of Windows Media, which is one of the technologies in the market attempting to address these challenges. Finally, given these trends and the state of the art, we argue that further research on data compression, encoder optimization, and multi-format transcoding can potentially make a significant technical and business impact in digital media. We also explore the reasons that research on related techniques such as wavelets or scalable video coding is having a relatively minor impact in today's practical digital media systems.

The advent of high definition digital television systems has changed the way we view content. The increased resolution of the broadcast video coupled with better displays in the form of Liquid Crystal Displays (LCD) and Plasma Display Panel (PDP) have made the viewing experience pleasant. Penalties that must be paid for these new technology are in terms of increased complexity of the video signal processing, the visibility of the hitherto imperceptible artifacts and cost. The processing of video signals for display on these new panels is a big challenge. Traditional TV manufacturers have never realized the need to de-interlace, since a Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) could display the interlaced signal directly. Similarly, image scaling/resolution changes are accommodated on a CRT by adjusting the scan size. With the new displays, which have fixed rasters addressed sequentially, the TV manufacturers have suddenly found the need to incorporate de-interlacing and scaling technologies. Due to large display size, artifacts such as MPEG compression artifacts which were not noticeable in smaller display have become unbearable to watch. The LCDs and PDPs have different display characteristics, that need separate processing such as Response Time Compensation (RTC) and motion de-blurring for better motion portrayal. In this dissertation, some of the solutions that mitigate these problems are proposed. "True" motion information are extracted from the video sequences by mixed model motion estimator and the information are used in the later stages for de-interlacing, frame rate conversion, video in-painting and de-convolution to reduce the hold type motion blur in LCD. ν-SVM based noise removal algorithm is proposed that reduces blocking, ringing and mosquito artifact from compressed video. The use of these technologies goes a long way to realize the full potential of the high definition TV systems.

The H.264 video compression standard provides tools for coding improvements of at least 2 dB, in terms of PSNR, and at least 50% in bit rate savings as compared with MPEG-2 video compression standard. It is expected that the H.264/MPEG-4 AVC will take over the digital video market, replacing the use of MPEG-2 in most digital video applications. The complete migration to the new video-coding algorithm will take several years given the wide scale use of MPEG-2 in the market place today. This creates an important need for transcoding technologies for converting the large volume of existent video material from the MPEG-2 into the H.264 format and vice versa. However, given the significant differences between the MPEG-2 and the H.264 encoding algorithms, the transcoding process of such systems is much more complex to other heterogeneous video transcoding processes. In this paper, we introduce and evaluate two versions of a fast intra-frame mode decision algorithm to be used as part of a high-efficient MPEG-2 to H.264 transcoder. In this work, we utilize an architecture of pixel domain video transcoding but we use the DC coefficient of the MPEG-2 DCT 8x8 blocks. Our evaluation results show that the proposed algorithm considerably reduces the complexity involved in the intra-frame prediction.

Residual operations are introduced in many video compression algorithms to exploit temporal redundancy in video sequences. One of the most effective and computationally simple algorithms is 3D-DWT-SPIHT algorithm. Nevertheless, it only utilizes intra-GOF temporal redundancy. In order to eliminate inter-GOF redundancy, the Simple GOF Residual Operation (SGRO) algorithm was introduced, where residual operations are performed every two GOFs. However, when background mutations occur, the PSNR of reconstructed target GOF significantly drops;on the other hand, when video sequences are temporally stationary, SGRO algorithm fails to fully utilize inter-GOF temporal redundancy due to its imperative insertion of no-residual-operation GOFs. In this paper, we propose a new Adaptive GOF Residual Operation (AGRO) algorithm, based upon a criterion on residual operations, which is derived from an empirical formula of image complexity established by us. AGRO algorithm always selects the best residual operation manner according to the contents of video sequences: by detecting contents of video sequences, it cancels residual operations where background mutations happen, while encouraging residual operations where video sequences are temporally stationary. Therefore, AGRO algorithm prevents the significant drop in compression effects resulted from background mutations, and in the meantime, fully utilizes inter-GOF temporal redundancy. In addition, AGRO algorithm demonstrates an innate error-propagation-resistant property. Numerical results show that AGRO algorithm renders a significant PSNR increase over SGRO algorithm whenever background mutations occur or temporally stationary sequences dominate.

Achieving the throughput of one wafer per minute per layer with a direct-write maskless lithography system. using 25 nm pixels for 50 nm feature sizes, requires data rates of about 10 Tb/s. In previous work, we have shown that lossless binary compression plays a key role in the system architecture for such a maskless writing system. Recently, we developed a new compression technique Context-Copy-Combinatorial-Code (C4) specifically tailored to lithography data which exceeds the compression efficiency of all other existing techniques including BZIP2. 2D-LZ. and LZ77. The decoder for any chosen compression scheme must be replicated in hardware tens of thousands of times in any practical direct write lithography system utilizing compression. As such. decode implementation complexity has a significant impact on overall complexity. In this paper, we explore the trade off between the compression ratio. and decoder buffer size for C4. Specifically, we present a number of techniques to reduce the complexity for C4 compression. First, buffer compression is introduced as a method to reduce decoder buffer size by an order of magnitude without sacrificing compression efficiency. Second, linear prediction is used as a low-complexity alternative to both context-based prediction and binarization. Finally, we allow for copy errors, which improve the compression efficiency of C4 at small buffer sizes. With these techniques in place. for a fixed buffer size, C4 achieves a significantly higher compression ratio than those of existing compression algorithms. We also present a detailed functional block diagram of the C4 decoding algorithm as a first step towards a hardware realization.

High-speed video cameras are powerful tools for investigating for instance the dynamics of fluids or the movements of mechanical parts in manufacturing processes. In the past years, the use of CMOS sensors instead of CCDs have made possible the development of high-speed video cameras offering digital outputs, readout flexibility and lower manufacturing costs. In this field, we designed a new fast CMOS camera with a 1280 × 1024 pixels resolution at 500 fps. In order to transmit from the camera only useful information from the fast images, we studied some specific algorithms like edge detection, wavelet analysis, image compression and object tracking. These image processing algorithms have been implemented into a FPGA embedded inside the camera. This FPGA technology allows us to process fast images in real time.

This paper proposes an copyright protection and error detection/recovery scheme for MPEG-2 video using digital Watermarking and Error Control Coding (ECC) algorithms. Instead of being directly embedding into the MPEG2 video the copyright information is first passed through an ECC encoder to generate an ECC coded watermark. The ECC coded watermark is embedded into each 8 x 8 block of the I frame. At the decoder the watermark can be extracted and automatically corrected by ECC decoding. The embedded watermark information can also be used to detect and locate the transmission errors in the video stream. A video recovery method can then be applied to improve the quality of the transmitted video. The experimental results show that the proposed scheme is able to detect errors in the video stream while decoding and reconstructing copyright information more correctly than the traditional method.

Microsoft(R) Windows Media 9 Series is a set of technologies that enables rich digital media experiences across many types of networks and devices. These technologies are widely used in the industry for media delivery over the internet and other media, and are also applied to broadcast, high definition DVDs, and digital projection in theaters. At the core of these technologies is a state-of-the-art video codec called Windows Media video 9 (WMV-9), which provides highly competitive video quality for reasonable computational complexity. WMV-9 is currently under standardization by the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) and the spec is at the CD (Committee Draft) stage. This paper includes a brief introduction to Windows Media technologies and their applications, with a focus on the compression algorithms used in WMV-9. We present analysis, experimental results, and independent studies that demonstrate quality benefits of WMV-9 over a variety of codecs, including optimized implementations of MPEG-2, MPEG-4, and H.264/AVC.
