High compression ratios for both still images and sequences of images are usually achieved by discarding information represented by block discrete cosine transform (BDCT) coefficients which is considered unimportant. This compression procedure yields images that exhibit annoying block artifacts. In this paper we examine the reconstruction of BDCT compressed images which results in the removal of the blocking artifact. The method we propose for the reconstruction of such images, is based on a hierarchical Bayesian approach. With such an approach image and degradation models are required. In addition, unknown hyperparameters, usually the noise and image variances, have to be estimated in advanced or simultaneously with the reconstructed image. We show how to introduce knowledge about these parameters into the reconstruction procedure. The proposed algorithm is tested experimentally.

We present a two-step segmentation scheme for the very low bit rate coding of general purpose video scenes. Our objective is to determine the regions of interest before the actual segmentation procedure, so as to reduce the computational overhead introduced by this relatively complex process, and to avoid the phenomenon of over-segmentation of the scene. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme results in a radical reduction of the number of discrete spatio-temporal regions, while the background is identified as one uniform region, even when it is characterized by complex global motion.

More advanced techniques for DCT/ME compression as used in MPEG-2 and H.263 are described. There is great interest in the storage and browsing of large collections of video clips, due to the current explosion in demand for digitalvideo. Many new algorithms and standards (MPEG, H.261, H.263, etc.) have been developed in recent years for the coding of video. However, most of these techniques lose performance when there exists significant camera motion, a common element of some classes of video such as surveillance and sporting events. A mosaic-based approach to videocompression, initially presented by Irani, Hsu, and Anandan [1], creates a world-oriented panoramic representation of the scene for compression. This paper proposes and evaluates a specific mosaic-based algorithm for videocompression that uses a static mosaic with a wavelet-based coding scheme for the mosaic and the temporal residual information. The mosaic-based approach is compared to a global motion compensation approach and the algorithms detailed in this paper are compared to the H.263 TMN5 coder.

Two new technologies, high-bit-rate digital subscriber lines and asymmetric digital subscriber lines promise transmission over most of the embedded loop plant at 1.544 Mbit/s and beyond. A video interpolation algorithm for spatio-temporal video pyramid coding is presented. The temporal and the spatial predictions of the present frame are interactively combined to produce the best prediction of the present frame. For this purpose, the temporal prediction error variance and the lower resolution image variance are measured and compared for each region. The proposed region-based video interpolator is shown to give visually correct predicted images by minimizing the spatial and the temporal prediction artifacts such as aliasing, uncovered background and blocking effect. Promising results are obtained for lossy compression.

This paper presents a new technique which allows interactive optimization of videocompressionalgorithms using massively parallel computers such as the CRAY T3D. This work aims to exploit as much as possible the parallel nature of digital image processing algorithms to obtain almost real-time computing with the flexibility of a software implementation. Thanks to this low computation time, interactive tools have been developed which allow easy and fast visual evaluation of image quality. This leads to significant productivity gain when developing new videocompression techniques. Our approach has been validated on advanced region-based videocompressionalgorithms. The interactive facilities offered by the proposed technique permit the accurate optimization of the algorithm parameters in few minutes, where several days were previously needed. Depending on the complexity of the compressionalgorithms, 8-12 images are compressed, decompressed and visualized per second.

This approach requires a suitable method to automatically locate cut points in order to separate shot in a video. Automatic cut detection to isolate shots in a video has received considerable attention due to many practical applications; our video database, browsing, authoring system, retrieval and movie. Previous studies are based on a set of difference mechanisms and they measured the content changes between video frames. But they could not detect more special effects which include dissolve, wipe, fade-in, fade-out, and structured flashing. In this paper, a new cut detection method for gradual transition based on computer vision techniques is proposed. And then, experimental results applied to commercial video are presented and evaluated.
