After analyzing the weakness of traditional video codec methods in processing real time compression of high-speed camera images. This paper designs a video codec method based on online compressed sensing (CS). The coding part uses pseudo-random down-sampling of the two-dimensional fast Fourier transform (2D FFT) to process video frames. Meanwhile, combine approximate message passing (AMP) algorithms and three-dimensional dual-tree wavelet transform (3D DTWT) for offline decoding. Experimental results show that, this method could achieve high signal to noise ratio while simplified the coding process.

video compression was widely adopted for bandwidth saving reasons in Internet and in digital TV. Although advanced compression methodologies were exceedingly desirable for much higher compression ratios and much better quality of a streaming video, the standard compression methods remained nevertheless at the level of JPEG2000 for single frames of images using DCT & wavelets, and WEG using DCT and exhaustive pixel correlations for the optical flow compression for the video. However, with the recent advent of sophisticated sensory technologies for NASA space missions, both the frame rate and the resolution of video streams become soon beyond the traditional capability of those DCT based compression methods. The goal was to find fundamental units of video that could be applied to the ultra-high frame rates of video streams. In this paper a novel implementation of video compression was based on the singularity maps in both space and time for the first time.

Advances in display technologies both for head mounted devices and television panels demand resolution increase beyond 4K for source signal in virtual reality video streaming applications. This poses a problem of content delivery trough a bandwidth limited distribution networks. Considering a fact that source signal covers entire surrounding space investigation reviled that compression efficiency may fluctuate 40% in average depending on origin selection at the conversion stage from 3D space to 2D projection. Based on these knowledge the origin selection algorithm for video compression applications has been proposed. Using discontinuity entropy minimization function projection origin rotation may be defined to provide optimal compression results. Outcome of this research may be applied across various video compression solutions for omnidirectional content.

Embedding information into multimedia data is a topic that has gained increasing attention recently. For video broadcast applications, watermarking of video, and especially of already encoded video, is interesting. We present a scheme for robust interoperable watermarking of MPEG-2 encoded video. The watermark is embedded either into the uncoded video or into the MPEG-2 bitstream, and can be retrieved from the decoded video. The scheme working on encoded video is of much lower complexity than a complete decoding process followed by watermarking in the pixel domain and re-encoding. Although an existing MPEG-2 bitstream is partly altered, the scheme avoids drift problems. The scheme has been implemented and practical results show that a robust watermark can be embedded into MPEG encoded video which can be used to transmit arbitrary binary information at a data rate of several bytes/second.

The development of video quality metrics and perceptual video quality metrics has been a well established pursuit for more than 25 years. The body of work has been seen to be most relevant for improving the performance of visual compression algorithms. However, modeling the human perception of video with an algorithm of some sort is notoriously complicated. As a result the perceptual coding of video remains challenging and no standards have incorporated perceptual video quality metrics within their specification. In this paper we present the use of video metrics at the system level of a video processing pipeline. We show that it is possible to combine the artefact detection and correction process by posing the problem as a classification exercise. We also present the use of video metrics as part of a classical testing pipeline for software infrastructure, but here it is sensitive to the perceived quality in picture degradation.

The accelerating growth of multimedia graphic information requires developing of highly efficient lossy image compression algorithms. This paper describes a new approach based on spectral transformations. The series of pilot experiments demonstrates encouraging results, which are better than for the up-to-date compressed image formats. Proposed concept may find an application in increasing compression ratio for sound, images and video.

To deal with the temporal redundancy of an input video sequence H.261 Standard specifics to use displaced frame differences with reference frames and, optionally, motion compensation technique. Usually, encoding process is performed in a loop comprising reconstruction of a reference frame in spatial domain along with the computation of a difference between a successive input video frame and its reference, followed by DCT compression of that displaced frame difference. In this paper we show that the reference frames can be reconstructed in the transform domain instead, having no impact on the computational accuracy and output bitstream. In this way, we represent all reference frames in the transform domain in a form of dequantized DCT coefficients, so the next inter-frame is a difference between the next DCT-transformed input picture and the current reference frame. This inter-frame is then quantized and entropy encoded on a regular basis. The output bitstream remains to be H.261-compliant, while the compression ratio as well as quality of the decompressed video are the same as in conventional implementation. We also present the performance results for the software codec running on Pentium PC.

Thresholding is a technique for suppressing small transform coefficients in DCT-based coding. Recently, dynamic programming has been presented to optimize thresholding in a rate-distortion sense. This contribution investigates the extension of this method for SNR scalability. Because of the tight coupling between base and enhancement layer in SNR scalability, a 2D dynamic programming algorithm has been developed.

We propose a full colour video compression strategy, based on 3-D subband coding with camera pan compensation, to generate a single embedded bit stream supporting multiple decoder display formats and a wide, finely gradated range of bit rates. An experimental implementation of our algorithm produces a single bit stream, from which suitable subsets are extracted to be compatible with many useful decoder frame sizes and frame rates and to satisfy transmission bandwidth constraints ranging from several tens of kilo-bits per second to several megabits per second. Reconstructed video quality from any of these bit stream subsets is often found to exceed that obtained from an MPEG-1 implementation, operated with equivalent bit rate constraints, in both perceptual quality and mean squared error. In addition, when restricted to two dimensions, the algorithm produces some of the best results available in still image compression. © 1994 SPIE. All rights reserved.

In this and an accompanying paper in the same proceedings a hierarchical video coding scheme is presented which is designed mainly for video communications at very low bit rates and therefore based on the hybrid coding principle. Both the displacement vector field and the displaced frame differences are decomposed into a Laplacian-type pyramid, and these pyramids are encoded in an embedded fashion using zero-trees and conditioning contexts, respectively. The focus of this paper lies on the motion estimation and the design of the motion vector field coding. Especially, the aspect of estimating and coding vector fields of different resolution is investigated to achieve optimal coding efficiency in coding situations, where there is not enough data rate available to code higher resolution vector fields completely.
