The Advanced Display Stream compression (ADSC) codec project is in development in response to a call for technologies from the video Electronics Standards Association (VESA). This codec targets visually lossless compression of display streams at a high compression rate (typically 6 bits/pixel) for mobile/VR/HDR applications. Functionality of the ADSC codec is described in this paper, and subjective trials results are provided using the ISO 29170-2 testing protocol.

The H.264 video coding standard has recently been standardized tinder the auspice of both the ITU and the ISO video experts groups. This new generation video standard, with its significant bandwidth savings, is expected to replace the use of MPEG-2 video compression in digital video systems. The complete migration to the crew video coding algorithm will take several years given the wide scale rise of MPEG-2 in the market place today. This creates an important need for transcoding technologies that transcode the widely available MPEG-2 compressed video to H.264 compressed format and vice versa. The high transcoding complexity can be reduced by reusing the information gathered in the video decoding process. However, given the significant differences between the MPEG-2 and the H.264 coding algorithms, transcoding is much more complex compared to :MPEG-2 to MPEG-4 transcoding. In this paper we give a brief introduction to H.264 and discuss the issues in transcoding and complexity reduction.

In this paper, we analyzed the key technology of current video surveillance systems, compared the performances, prices, and the prospects between the H. 264 and AVS codec technologies, studied the advantages and disadvantages of different designs, particularly the data transmission, terminal reception facilities, decoding and demonstration of the video surveillance systems. We have optimized the core algorithms such as intra prediction, inter prediction and fast motion estimation, and performed some relevant simulations for these algorithms. Experimental results show that these new algorithms simplified the design and speeded up the compression rate. From the simulation results, we proposed a new video surveillance system based on AVS. The program reached low price, high efficiency, fast, high image quality, convenient application and operation, greatly improved the current video surveillance systems.

A new method for coding of displaced frame differences (DFD) is proposed. It is in its main aspects close to the classical pyramid approach of Burt and Adelson. In particular a least squares L₂ Laplacian pyramid is employed which decomposes the DFD into several levels with differing spatial resolution. This pyramid is quantized and coded following a layered quantization approach together with a layered coding method based on conditional arithmetic coding. The DFD encoder outputs an embedded bit stream. Thus the coder control may truncate the bitstream at any point, and can keep a fixed rate. Simulation results show promising rate-distortion performance for low bit rate video coding.

Recent advances in communications signal processing and VLSI technology are fostering tremendous interest in transmitting high-speed digital data over ordinary telephone lines at bit rates substantially above the ISDN Basic Access rate (144 Kbit/s). Two new technologies, high-bit-rate digital subscriber lines and asymmetric digital subscriber lines promise transmission over most of the embedded loop plant at 1.544 Mbit/s and beyond. Stimulated by these research promises and rapid advances on video coding techniques and the standards activity, information networks around the globe are now exploring possible business opportunities of offering quality video services (such as distant learning, telemedicine, and telecommuting etc.) through this high-speed digital transport capability in the copper loop plant. Visual communications for residential customers have become more feasible than ever both technically and economically.

A new interpolation algorithm for 2D data is presented that is based on the least-squares minimization and the use of splines. This interpolation technique is then integrated into a double source decomposition scheme for image data compression. First, a least-squares interpolation is implemented and applied to a uniform sampling image. Second, the splines and the analysis of the entropy allow us to reconstruct the final image. Experimental results show that the proposed image interpolation algorithm is very efficient. The major advantages of this new method over traditional block-coding techniques are the absence of the tiling effect and a more effective exploitation of interblock correlation.

Content based video indexing and retrieval has its foundations in the analyses of the prime video temporal structures. Consequently, technologies for video segmentation and key-frame extraction have become crucial for the development of advanced digital video systems. Conventional algorithms for video partitioning and key-frame extraction are mainly implemented autonomously. By focusing he analysis on the compressed video features, this paper introduces a real-time algorithm for scene change detection and key-frame extraction that generates the frame difference metrics by analysing statistics of the macro-block features extracted from the MPEG compressed stream. The key-frame extraction method is implemented using difference metrics curve simplification by discrete contour evolution algorithm. This approach resulted in a fast and robust algorithm. Results of computer simulations are reported.

In fractal image coding the original image is approximated by a unique fixpoint of a contractive affine transformation. To ensure convergence at the decoder an eigenvalue calculation of the transformation matrix during the encoding process is necessary to admit scaling coefficients larger than one. Due to the huge dimension of the transformation matrix the eigenvalue calculation is in general computationally infeasible. This paper presents a method to reduce the dimension of this matrix dramatically. The result of this method is a simple rule to create the reduced matrix directly without using the original matrix. Based on this rule a hierarchical method is presented, which allows us to test rather general fractal coding schemes for convergence.

High Efficiency video Coding (HEVC) is the latest attempt by ISO/MPEG and ITU-T/VCEG to define the next generation compression standard beyond H.264/MPEG-4 Part 10 AVC. One of the major goals of HEVC is to provide efficient compression for resolutions beyond HDTV. However, the subjective evaluations that led to the selection of technologies were bound to HDTV resolution. Moreover, performance evaluation metrics to report efficiency results of this standard are mainly based on PSNR, especially for resolutions beyond HDTV. This paper provides subjective evaluation results to assess the performance of the current HEVC codec for resolutions beyond HDTV.

Among various transform techniques for image compression, the Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) is the most popular and effective one in practical applications because it gives an almost optimal performance and can be implemented at an acceptable cost. The transform coding utilizing the Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) has been commonly adopted in the various standards for image compression. These include the CCITT standard for video telephony, the JPEG (Joint Photographic Expert Group) standard for coloured still-image transmission and the MPEG (Motion Pictures Expert Group) standard for pictures on the storage media. MPEG was originally developed for digital television, its popularity and effectiveness as a storage/transmission format and abundance of content have made it attractive for use in personal video playback devices. DCT based coding schemes are also used for higher quality applications such as HDTV. Therefore, an architecture which rapidly computes DCT has become a key component of image compression VLSIs. This paper reviews the existing efficient algorithms for implementing the reconfigurable Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT)/ Inverse Discrete Cosine Transform (IDCT) architecture for multimedia applications and proposed an algorithm which offers high speed and reduced area. The proposed architecture uses an error compensated adder tree to perform shifting and addition operations. The reconfigurable architecture not only decreases the time of research and development but also saves fabrication cost. The advantages of the proposed architecture are that this architecture does not require multipliers and ROM. It only needs adders and shifters. In digital circuits, the area of the multipliers and ROM are larger than adders and shifters.
