In this paper, a new method to achieve lossless compression of two-dimensional images based on the discrete cosine transform (DCT) is proposed. This method quantizes the high energy DCT coefficients in each block, finds an inverse DCT from only these quantized coefficients, and forms an error residual sequence to be coded. Furthermore, a simple delta modulation scheme is performed on the coefficients that exploits correlation between high energy DCT coefficients in neighboring blocks of an image. The resulting sequence is compressed by using an entropy coder, and simulations show the results to be promising and more effective than just simply performing entropy coding on original raw image data. © 1995 SPIE. Wavelet theory provides an alternative approach to traditional DCT-based coding with properties that suggest an advantage over traditional schemes, especially for high compression ratios. This paper presents the design of an image coder for very low bit rates (8..64 kbit/s) which can be used for videophone applications. Apart from the image quality coding delay is an important critical factor. The coder performs a hybrid motion compensation/transform coding approach using a warping motion compensation to completely avoid blocking artifacts. Experiments using standard videophone test sequences show that the obtained image quality is similar to the best available results from DCT coders.

Most image coding systems rely on signal processing concepts such as transforms, VQ, and motion compensation. In order to achieve significantly lower bit rates, it will be necessary to devise encoding schemes that involve mid-level and high-level computer vision. Model-based systems have been described, but these are usually restricted to some special class of images such as head-and-shoulders sequences. We propose to use mid-level vision concepts to achieve a decomposition that can be applied to a wider domain of image material. In particular, we describe a coding scheme based on a set of overlapping layers. The layers, which are ordered in depth and move over one another, are composited in a manner similar to traditional `cel' animation. The decomposition (the vision problem) is challenging, but we have attained promising results on simple sequences. Once the decomposition has been achieved, the synthesis is straightforward.

videoconferencing is an application of video compression that is rapidly expanding in terms of market acceptance and importance. A number of recent papers discuss methods for very low bit rate videoconferencing between 10 - 20 kbps. In addition, telephone lines with state-of-the- art data modems are capable of transmitting data between 20 - 28 kbps. Since videoconferencing requires the transmission and reception of audio and video, the video component is likely to be restricted to about 20 kbps when using telephone lines. While these recent papers indicate acceptable quality for sequences such as `Miss America' for these very low bit rates, they also indicate higher data rates required for other sequences, that are characterized by excessive movement and/or details. In this paper, we are introducing a framework in which sequences that fall in this category are processed so that they match better the characteristics of the coder. However, this cannot be accomplished without reducing the amount of information in the sequence. The key is to make this in such a way as to produce the least subjectively perceptible distortion. Our experiments have shown that the subjective quality of the resulting sequence after active coding and decoding is better than that of the one resulting from standard coding and decoding.

The Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) has been applied to image and image sequence compression to decorrelate the picture data before quantization. This decorrelation results in many of the quantized transform coefficients equaling zero, hence the compression gain. For the decoder, the very few, sparsely populated, non-zero transform coefficient can be utilized for great speed-up in the inverse DCT. This paper describes and compares two styles of implementations of fast inverse DCTs for sparse data. The first implementation that we call the symmetric mapped inverse DCT is based on the forward mapped inverse DCT, but our implementation is up to three times faster. The second implementation is based on a scaled inverse DCT, with detection of zero values. Both implementations are tested for speed against other algorithms, under varying degrees of DCT coefficient sparseness.

In this paper, we examine the subjective and the objective performance of MPEG-2 for HDTV. Tests were conducted on seven HDTV sequences selected to cover a wide range of conditions in terms of scene content, complexity and motion speed and direction. The selected material was digitized in 4:2:2 format with HDTV resolution and coded using MPEG-2 Man Profile/High Level syntax. Formal subjective assessment was performed by non-expert viewers on the sequences coded at a bit rate of 18 Mbits/s. Since MPEG-2 allows a great flexibility at the encoding end, we also examined the impact of various MPEG-2 encoding parameters on the quality of the reconstructed HDTV video sequences. The parameters include bit rate, the structure of picture organization, as well as temporal processing.

Rate control is considered as an important issue in video coding, since it significantly affects video quality. In this paper, we will discuss joint encoder and channel rate control for variable bit-rate (VBR) video over packet-switched Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) networks. Since a variable bit-rate traffic is allowed in such networks, an open-loop encoder without rate control can generate consistent-quality video. But in order to improve statistical multiplexing gain (SMG), an encoder buffer is essential to smooth highly variable video bitstream. Due to the finite buffer size, some forms of encoder rate control have to be enforced and consequently, video quality varies. We argue that a rate control scheme has to balance both issues of consistent video quality on the encoder side and bitstream smoothness for SMG on the network side. We present a joint encoder and channel rate control algorithm for ATM networks, with leaky buckets as open-loop source flow control models. The encoder rate control is separated into a sustainable-rate control and a unidirectional instantaneous-rate control. It can improve the problem of leaky bucket saturation exhibited in previous works. Experimental results with MPEG video will be presented. The results verify our analysis and show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

A MPEG1 codec that is capable of real-time playback of video and audio on HP's RISC-based workstations has been developed. Real-time playback is achieved by examining the complete MPEG1 decoding pipeline and optimizing the algorithms used for the various stages of the video and audio decompression process. For video decompression, efficient implementations are derived by examining the huffman decoder, inverse quantizer and inverse DCT as a single system. For audio decompression, by viewing the subband synthesis function in MPEG1 layer I and layer II decoding as a DCT, a fast 32-point DCT suitable for use in MPEG1 audio decompression has been developed. Besides algorithmic enhancements, in order to achieve real-time performance, minor changes to the CPU architecture and the display pipeline architecture were needed. The integration of algorithmic and architectural enhancements results in real-time playback of MPEG1 video and audio on HP's RISC based workstations.

video compression is becoming increasingly important with the advent of the compression standards and broadband networks. Typical applications include high-definition television, multimedia communications, etc. There are two kinds of redundancies that exist in a video sequence, namely, temporal and spatial which are exploited to achieve compression. The spatial redundancies are removed by using techniques such as discrete cosine transform, vector quantization, etc. while the temporal redundancies are removed by the motion estimation/compensation techniques. Recently, several block based motion estimation algorithms have been reported in the literature. However, these algorithms are either computationally expensive or converge to a local optimum. In this paper, we propose a reduced complexity block-matching motion estimation algorithm for an MPEG video coder. This algorithm consists of a layered structure and hence does not converge to a local optimum. Most importantly, it employs a simple matching criterion, namely, the modified pixel difference classification (MPDC) and hence results in a reduced computational complexity. The MPEG video coder has been simulated using the proposed layered structure MPDC algorithm (LSA-MPDC). Simulation results indicate that the LSA-MPDC algorithm achieves a good performance for both slow and fast moving sequences. In addition, the hardware implementation of the LSA-MPDC algorithm is very simple because of the binary operations used in the matching criteria. © 1994 SPIE. All rights reserved.

This paper proposes a hybrid DCT/Quadtree coding technique to compress motion compensated difference images for video conferencing applications. The hybrid scheme is developed primarily to eliminate the visually annoying `corona' effect caused by the traditional DCT coding of subimage blocks containing edge components. In this coding framework, the quadtree segmentation scheme is selected to compress edge blocks because of its ability to describe geometrical structures accurately. For quadtree coded blocks, each segmented subregion is represented by its associated sample mean, which is quantized and transmitted along with the segmentation pattern information to the receiver for reconstruction. The remaining subimage blocks are coded using the DCT. Simulation results demonstrate that this hybrid coding system provides a subjectively superior video quality than traditional DCT coding systems: the corona effect is virtually eliminated and the visible difference is most noticeable at low bit rates.
