PerSiVal: On-Body AR Visualization of Biomechanical Arm simulations

In this work, we explore different combinations of techniques for an interactive, on-body visualization in augmented reality (AR) of an upper arm muscle simulation model. In terms of data, we focus on a continuum-mechanical simulation model involving five different muscles of the human upper arm, with physiologically realistic geometry. In terms of use cases, we focus on the immersive illustration, education, and dissemination of such simulation models. We describe the process of developing six on-body visualization prototypes over a period of five years. For each prototype, we employed different types of motion capture, AR display technologies, and visual encoding approaches, and gathered feedback throughout outreach activities. We reflect on the development of the individual prototypes and summarize lessons learned of our exploration process into the design space of situated on-body visualization.

Multi-access Edge Computing moves computation resources closer to the user and is a core component of future mobile networks. To ensure performance, applications must migrate through the network for optimal component deployment. simulations come in handy to demonstrate how applications can be distributed depending on user movement but also require modeling user behavior. This paper describes our ongoing work in this area.

One of the many applications of ultrasound transducers is acoustic levitation. This technology has a major advantage: it can manipulate objects contactless, thus being used in various fields, such as microelectronics or biotechnologies. This paper proposes an interactive MATLAB interface to simulate the most important acoustic parameters involved in the ultrasonic levitation phenomenon. The user can adjust the transducer spacing and their number to visualize their effects on the acoustic radiation force, the acoustic pressure field, and the Gor'kov potential. The simulation results were used to design and create an experimental physical system. The tests were done for different distances and numbers of transducers. The best solution was obtained for 36 transducers distributed in concentric circles on the surface of two domes, placed parallel at 20 cm from each other. In addition, a study of ultrasound signals and transducers is made. © 2024 IEEE.

Stream processing is becoming increasingly important as the amount of data being produced, transmitted, processed, and stored continues to grow. One of the greatest difficulties in designing stream processing applications is estimating the final runtime performance in production. This is often complicated by differences between the development and final execution environments, unexpected outliers in the incoming data, or subtle long-term problems such as congestion due to bottlenecks in the pipeline. In this demonstration, we present an automated tool workflow for interactively simulating and exploring the performance characteristics of a stream processing pipeline in real-time. Changes to input data, pipeline structure, or operator configurations during the simulation are immediately reflected in the simulation results, allowing to interactively explore the robustness of the pipeline to outliers, changes in input data, or long-term effects. © 2023 Owner/Author(s).

The use of computer-aided methods for the design of parts that must meet functional or stability requirements typically consists of an iterative cycle of design, physical simulation and testing or analysis, followed by redesign, etc. Each step is often performed with a domain-specific tool, e.g., a specific CAD modeling suite. This results in the need to convert the model representation between steps, such as meshing for finite element simulation for example. In recent work, a distributed application framework has been proposed that allows for the interactive modification and simulation of tetrahedral meshes derived from existing CAD models, e.g., to create customized versions of parts that were designed for mass production. This shortens the design cycle by eliminating the need for conversion and switching between tools. In this paper, we present a more detailed description and improvements to this architecture by using GPU parallelization not only for simulation but also for mesh editing, which leads to even shorter iteration cycles. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

simulation extractability is a strong security notion of zkSNARKs that guarantees that an attacker who produces a valid proof must know the corresponding witness, even if the attacker had prior access to proofs generated by other users. Notably, simulation extractability implies that proofs are non-malleable and is of fundamental importance for applications of zkSNARKs in distributed systems. In this work, we study sufficient and necessary conditions for constructing simulation-extractable universal zkSNARKs via the popular design approach based on compiling polynomial interactive oracle proofs (PIOP). Our main result is the first security proof that popular universal zkSNARKs, such as PLONK and Marlin, as deployed in the real world, are simulation-extractable. Our result fills a gap left from previous work (Faonio et al. TCC'23, and Kohlweiss et al. TCC'23) which could only prove the simulation extractability of the "textbook" versions of these schemes and does not capture their optimized variants, with all the popular optimization tricks in place, that are eventually implemented and deployed in software libraries.

The low-carbon and flexible characteristics of large-scale distributed energy resources will provide new opportunities for interactive support in the medium and low voltage distribution systems. Currently research on low-carbon dispatching in distribution systems mainly focuses on single voltage levels, without considering the interactive support ability between cross voltage levels. Therefore, this paper proposes a low-carbon optimization dispatching method for the medium and low voltage distribution systems based on carbon emissions. This method first equates the low voltage station area to a virtual battery, and introduce carbon emission flow theory to calculate the carbon emission intensity of virtual battery Secondly, a two-layer low-carbon dispatching model for the medium and low voltage distribution systems is constructed and solved by using a alternating direction method of multiplies;Finally, an improved the medium and low voltage distribution systems is applied for simulation verification, and the results show that the proposed method can enhance the interactive support ability of the medium and low voltage systems and reduce system operating costs and carbon emissions. © 2023 IEEE.

Digital twins serve as a source of new insights about industrial processes and systems performance and enable the use of cutting-edge technologies for their optimization. Solution vendors offer a variety of tools for digital twin implementation. As the amount of such solutions grows, the need to integrate and navigate the variety of digital twins in large-scale systems arises. The complexity of modern industrial systems requires an approach, where the integration process will happen in an organized way, allowing engineers to make informed decisions and communicate clearly project goals and transfer them into actual design and solution. This work presents results from investigating the applicability of concepts, building blocks, and engineering processes for distributed interactive simulation (DIS) standards to perform such tasks. It provides an example of integration between two simulation tools used for digital twin development and illustrates how DIS aligns with such a development process.

Advances in artificial intelligence and robotics development are providing the technical abilities that will allow autonomous systems to perform complex tasks in uncertain situations. Despite these technical advances, a lack of human trust leads to inefficient system deployment, increases supervision workload and fails to remove humans from harm's way. Conversely, excessive trust in autonomous systems may lead to increased risks and potentially catastrophic mission failure. In response to this challenge, trusted autonomy is the emerging scientific field aiming at establishing the foundations and framework for developing trusted autonomous systems. This paper investigates the use of modelling and simulation (M&S) to advance research into trusted autonomy. The work focuses on a comprehensive M&S-based synthetic environment to monitor operator inputs and provide outputs in a series of interactive, end-user driven events designed to better understand trust and autonomous systems. As part of this analysis, a suite of prototype model-based planning, simulation and analysis tools have been designed, developed and tested in the first of a series of distributed interactive events. In each of these events, the applied M&S methodologies were assessed for their ability to answer the question;what are the key mechanisms that affect trust in autonomous systems? The potential shown by M&S throughout this work paves the way for a wide range of future applications that can be used to better understand trust in autonomous systems and remove a key barrier to their wide-spread adoption in the future of defense.
