The large volume of data flowing throughout location-based social networks (LBSNs) provides an opportunity for human mobility behavior understanding and prediction. However, data quality issues (e.g., historical check-in POI missing, data sparsity) limit the effectiveness of existing LBSN-oriented studies, e.g., Point-of-Interest (POI) recommendation or prediction. Contrary to previous efforts in next POI recommendation or prediction, we focus on identifying the missing POI which the user has visited at a past specific time and proposed a multi-network Embedding (MNE) method. Specifically, the model jointly captures temporal cyclic effect, user preference and sequence transition influence in a unified way by embedding five relational information graphs into a shared dimensional space from both POI- and category-instance levels. The proposed model also incorporates region-level spatial proximity to explore geographical influence, and derives the ranking score list of candidates for missing POI identification. We conduct extensive experiments to evaluate the performance of our model on two real large-scale datasets, and the experimental results show its superiority over other competitors. Significantly, it also proves that the proposed model can be naturally transferred to general next POI recommendation and prediction tasks with competitive performances.

With the increasing demand for data-driven decision making, there is an urgent need for processing geographically distributed data streams in real-time. The existing scheduling and resource management schemes efficiently optimize stream processing performance with the awareness of resource, quality-of-service, and network traffic. However, the correlation between network delay and inter-operator communication pattern is not well-understood. In this study, we propose a network-aware and partition-based resource management scheme to deal with the ever-changing network condition and data communication in stream processing. The proposed approach applies operator fusion by considering the computational demand of individual operators and the inter-operator communication patterns. It maps the fused operators to the clustered hosts with the weighted shortest processing time heuristic. Meanwhile, we established a 3-dimensional coordinate system for prompt reflection of the network condition, real-time traffic, and resource availability. We evaluated the proposed approach against two benchmarks, and the results demonstrate the efficiency in throughput and resource utilization. We also conducted a case study and implemented a prototype system supported by the proposed approach that aims to utilize the stream processing paradigm for pedestrian behavior analysis. The prototype application estimates walking time for a given path according to the real crowd traffic. The promising evaluation results of processing performance further illustrate the efficiency of the proposed approach.

Blockchains like Bitcoin and Ethereum have seen significant adoption in the past few years and show promise to design applications without any centralized reliance on third parties. In this paper, we present Endolith, an auditing framework for verifying file integrity and tracking file history without third party reliance using a smart contract-based blockchain. Annotated files are continuously monitored and metadata about changes including file hashes are stored tamper-proof on the blockchain. based on this, Endolith can prove that a file stored a long time ago has not been changed without authorization or, if it did, track when it has changed, by whom. Endolith implementation is based on Ethereum and Hadoop distributed File System (HDFS). Our evaluation on a public blockchain network shows that Endolith is efficient for files that are infrequently modified but often accessed, which are common characteristics of data archives.

Heterogeneous architectures offer the opportunity to achieve high performance and energy efficiency by selecting appropriate cores for execution of ever changing software applications. Appropriate core selection depends on the interaction between the structural properties of the software and the hardware that influences performance of the software. We propose a model for efficient core selection when executing software on ARMs big. LITTLE heterogeneous architecture. It features a metric based on the correlation between the performance and the number of last level data cache (LLC) misses on a big and a LITTLE core. Additionally our model defines a soft threshold in terms of the number of LLC misses that determines efficient core selection. We verify the model on both a stress benchmark (stress-ng) and a performance and energy demanding application (HEVC decoding) using XMEM and Linux perf dynamic tools.

Today large-scale simulation applications are becoming common in research and industry. A significant fraction of them run on multi-core clusters. Current parallel simulation kernels use multi-process and multi-thread to exploit inter-node parallelism and intra-node parallelism on multi-core clusters. We exploit task-base parallelism in parallel discrete event simulation (PDES) kernels, which is more fine-grained than thread-level and process-level parallelism. In our system, every simulation event is wrapped to a task. Work-stealing task scheduling scheme is applied to achieve dynamic load balancing among the multi-cores, and a graph partitioning approach is applied in partitioning simulation entities among the cluster nodes. Experimental results show that our PDES kernel outperforms existing PDES kernels by fully exploiting task parallelism.

In this paper, we propose a method for the computation of a novel distance metrics, called Multi-Parameterized Edit Distance (MPED) among strings defined over heterogeneous alphabets. We show that the computation of MPED is hard and that several interesting application contexts can benefit from its application. We then present a novel implementation strategy based on an Evolutionary Heuristics, which we experimentally demonstrate to be efficient and effective for the problem at hand. Our approach paves indeed the way to the adoption of this new metric in all those contexts in which involved strings come from heterogeneous sources, each adopting its own alphabet.

Multicast communication constrained by end-to-end delay and inter-destination delay variation is known as Delay and Delay Variation Bounded Multicast (DVBM). In this paper, we propose a dynamic multi-core multicast approach to solve the DVBM problem. The proposed three-phase algorithm, Multi-core DVBM Trees (MCDVBMT), semi-matches group members to core nodes. The message is disseminated to group members using trees rooted at the designated core nodes. MCDVBMT dynamically reorganizes the rooted trees in response to changes to multicast group members. On average, only 5.2% of the total requests trigger re-executions and 53.6% of the graphs generated by MCDVBMT suffer from re-execution before receiving all dynamic requests.

This paper proposes an agent based approach to the scheduling of jobs in datacenters under thermal constraints. The model encompasses both temporal and spatial aspects of the temperature evolution using a unified model, taking into account the dynamics of heat production and dissipation. Agents coordinate to eventually move jobs to the best suitable place and to adapt dynamically the frequency settings of the nodes to the best combination. Several objectives of the agents are compared under different circumstances by an extensive set of experiments.

Many anomaly detection applications can provide partially observed anomalies, but only limited work is for this setting. Additionally, a number of anomaly detectors focus on learning a particular model of normal/abnormal class. However, the intra-class model might be too complicated to be accurately learned. It is still a non-trivial task to handle data with anomalies/inliers in skewed and heterogeneous distributions. To address these problems, this paper proposes an anomaly detection method to leverage Partially Labeled anomalies via Surrogate supervision-based Deviation learning (denominated PLSD). The original supervision (i.e., known anomalies and a set of explored inliers) is transferred to semantic-rich surrogate supervision signals (i.e., anomaly-inlier and inlier-inlier class) via vector concatenation. Then different relationships and interactions between anomalies and inliers are directly and efficiently learned thanks to the neural network’s connection property. Anomaly scoring is processed via the trained network and the high-efficacy inliers. Extensive experiments show that PLSD significantly prevails state-of-the-art semi/weakly-supervised anomaly detectors.

This study deals with the evacuation of areas that involve people with disabilities. A crowd evacuation model has been developed using the Cellular Automata (CA) parallel computing tool. This model is capable of simulating and evaluating human behavior and special features that exist when people with disabilities are included in the process of evacuation. During the experimental process, the model simulates the evacuation of a secondary school for disabled children in the prefecture of Xanthi. After attendance and observation of an earthquake safety exercise organized by this school, the total evacuation time is recorded. At the end of this study, the developed model is validated on the basis of actual data and useful conclusions are drawn for the specific application area. In addition, with the modification of the original data, the model is applicable to every building case.
