In the consideration of the context of human body dynamics, we propose an energy-aware and quality-of-service (QoS) method for wireless body area networks (WBAN). This method exploits the characteristics of physical (PHY) layer based on narrow band signaling with M-PSK modulation and low power micro sensor transceiver. It improves energy efficiency of both receiver and transmitter front-end components while satisfying the QoS metrics in accordance with link quality due to human posture changes or movements. It can meet various QoS requirements of each sensor, improve bandwidth utilization and reduce energy consumption. This method saves an average of 6.2% of energy consumption over the TPC and LA-based methods at a power of -25dBm.

Runge-Kutta methods are widely used and popular solutions method for scientific simulations based on differential equations and, thus, their efficient execution is crucial for many applications. Today, also the energy consumption is getting more and more important for high performance computing. In this article, we investigate the performance and the energy consumption of Runge-Kutta methods solving systems of ordinary differential equations on recent Intel processors. Our specific interest is the study of different program versions of multithreaded Runge-Kutta methods which result from loop transformations within the nested loops over stage vectors and systems sizes. Four program versions of the Runge-Kutta method DOPRI5 are chosen and are applied to systems of ordinary differential equations with different workload. Experiments have been performed for different numbers of threads and the performance, power and energy consumption is reported and analyzed.

Deep neural network (DNN) training is generally performed by cloud computing platforms. However, cloud-based training has several problems such as network bottleneck, server management cost, and privacy. To overcome these problems, one of the most promising solutions is distributed DNN model training which trains the model with not only high-performance servers but also low-end power-efficient mobile edge or user devices. However, due to the lack of a framework which can provide an optimal cluster configuration (i.e., determining which computing devices participate in DNN training tasks), it is difficult to perform efficient DNN model training considering DNN service providers' preferences such as training time or energy efficiency. In this paper, we introduce a novel framework for distributed DNN training that determines the best training cluster configuration with available heterogeneous computing resources. Our proposed framework utilizes pre-training with a small number of training steps and estimates training time, power, energy, and energy-delay product (EDP) for each possible training cluster configuration. based on the estimated metrics, our framework performs DNN training for the remaining steps with the chosen best cluster configurations depending on DNN service providers' preferences. Our framework is implemented in TensorFlow and evaluated with three heterogeneous computing platforms and five widely used DNN models. According to our experimental results, in 76.67% of the cases, our framework chooses the best cluster configuration depending on DNN service providers' preferences with only a small training time overhead.

Nowadays many practical systems adopt erasure codes to ensure reliability and reduce storage overhead. However, erasure codes also bring in low recovery performance. The network links in practice, such as peer-to-peer and cross-data network, always have non-uniform bandwidth because of various reasons. To reduce recovery time, we propose parallel Pipeline Tree (PPT) and parallel Pipeline Cross-Tree (PPCT) to speed up single-node and multiple-node recovery in non-uniform traffic network environment, respectively. By utilizing bandwidth gap among links, PPT constructs a tree path based on bandwidth and pipelines the data in parallel. By sharing traffic pressure of requesters with helpers, PPCT constructs a tree-like path and pipelines the data in parallel without additional helpers. We also theoretically explain the effect of PPT and PPCT used in uniform network environment. The experiments implemented on geo-distributed Amazon EC2 show that the time reduction reaches up to 37.2% with PPCT over traditional technique and reaches up to 89.2%, 76.4% and 21.6% with PPT over traditional technique, Partial-parallel-Repair and Repair Pipelining, respectively. PPT and PPCT significantly improve the performance of erasure codes' recovery.

Heterogeneous systems promise to improve performance and endurance of power constrained systems, by utilizing computing elements of different power and performance characteristics. Such systems provide the possibility to trade number and types of core with Dynamic Voltage and Frequency Scaling (DVFS) levels and core utilization rate to achieve optimal energy efficiency. Therefore by making smart decisions on application scheduling and mapping we can exploit and maximize the benefits of using heterogeneous processors. At the same time, the application level of parallelism can conveniently be exposed by dataflow Models of Computation (MoCs). In this paper we show an energy efficient execution approach for heterogeneous architecture. We demonstrate the approach on a real-life streaming application modelled with Parameterized and Interfaced Synchronous Dataflow (PiSDF). The presented solution shows how to integrate our approach in the workflow of a dataflow application prototyping tool. The obtained results demonstrate that, by using an optimal scheduling and mapping, more than 30% of energy reduction can be achieved on a single actor level.

An effective strategy for accelerating the calculation of convex hulls for planar point sets is to filter the input points by discarding interior points. In this paper, we present such a straightforward preprocessing approach by exploiting the modern Graphics processing Unit. The basic idea behind our approach is to discard the points that locate inside a convex polygon formed by 16 extreme points. Due to the fact that the extreme points of a planar point set do not alter when all points are rotated with the same angle in the plane, four groups of extreme points with min or max x or y coordinates can be found in the original point set and three rotated point sets. These 16 extreme points are then used to form a planar convex polygon. We check all input points and discard the points that locate inside the convex polygon, and then use the remaining points to calculate the desired convex hull. Experimental results show that: when employing the proposed preprocessing algorithm, it achieves the speedups of about 4x similar to 5x on average and 5x similar to 6x in the best cases over the cases where the proposed approach is not used. In addition, more than 99% input points can be discarded in most experimental tests.

In this paper, we present a middleware to save energy in mobile computing devices that offload tasks to a remote server in the cloud. Saving energy in these devices is very important to prolong the battery life and avoid overheating. The middleware uses an available nearby device called auxiliary server either as a surrogate for the remote one, or as a proxy to pass the data between the mobile device and the remote server. The main idea is to reduce the energy consumption of the communication with the remote server by using a high-speed or a low-power local connection with the auxiliary server instead. The paper also analyzes when it is beneficial to use the auxiliary server based on the response time from the remote server and the bandwidth of the remote connection. The proposed middleware is evaluated using different benchmarks, including commonly used applications in mobile devices, and simulations. Furthermore, it is compared to state-of-the art approaches in this area. The experiments show that The middleware is energy-efficient especially when the bandwidth of the remote communication is relatively low or the server is overloaded.

Internet of Things (IoT) is playing increasingly more fundamental role in wide range of sectors, including industry, agriculture, health care, and other services. In many cases, cloud computing serves as an elastic and efficient paradigm for implementing IoT back-ends. With the emerging lightweight software container technologies, the feasible approaches and design options for such IoT back-ends have been significantly enriched. In our paper we present the evolution of an IoT back-end, which is responsible for collecting (among others) meteorological, image and soil data from cultivated fields in order to enable precision farming. The different versions, namely the cloud VM-based and the Docker containerized variants, provide highly scalable and vendor independent (cloud provider agnostic) solutions, therefore they can form a robust and adaptive framework for further pilot applications areas, e.g. Connected Cars and Industry 4.0, as the presented benchmarks illustrate the throughput and other parameters of the current implementation in the paper.

When multiple entities communicate or collaborate in JointCloud, identities are the very prior basis to build trust with each other. Decentralized identifier (DID) can provide a trusted identity with blockchain technology and a complete method of identity verification based on verifiable credentials, which solves problems of conventional centralized identity. However, current DIDs can only conduct verification within a single blockchain, which limits the interoperability of DIDs on different blockchains. network isolation hinders the verification of DIDs on different blockchains and thus there is a need to break the barrier between blockchains. In this paper, we propose a model to conduct cross-chain verification of DIDs. We build a system of credit evaluation to describe the credibility of DIDs in a unified way and deploy smart contracts to implement cross-chain verification of DIDs. Experimental results verifies the feasibility of the model, which realizes cross-chain verification of DIDs in the networks of blockchain.

We present a parallelizzable, multilevel algorithm for the study of three-dimensional structure of biological macromolecules, applied to two fundamental topics: the 3D reconstruction of Chromatin and the elaboration of motion of proteins. For Chromatin, starting from contact data obtained through Chromosome Conformation Capture techniques, our method first subdivides the data matrix in biologically relevant blocks, and then treats them separately, at several levels, depending on the initial data resolution. The result is a family of configurations for the entire fiber, each one compatible with both experimental data and prior knowledge about specific genomes. For Proteins, the method is conceived as a solution for the problem of identifying motion and alternative conformations to the deposited structures. The algorithm, using quaternions, processes the main chain and the aminoacid side chains independently;it then exploits a Monte Carlo method for selection of biologically acceptable conformations, based on energy evaluation, and finally returns a family of conformations and of trajectories at single atom resolution.
