Today, auto-scaling solutions are still largely reactive and are based on the load measured on existing nodes nearing a threshold or traffic forecast information provided in advance of a scheduled event. Despite these advancements, events which cause a flash flood of web traffic do not always benefit from this approach to auto-scaling because the latency of provisioning new nodes is not sufficient to prevent resource saturation. This paper proposes a novel approach to preemptive compute scaling based on the buzz of specific social network hashtags. We argue that improved scaling latency and service availability can be achieved for web services that receive intermittent as well as unexpected traffic load patterns. By combining social network monitoring, with auto-scaling frameworks, this approach can reduce the operational expense impact of over- and under-provisioning as well as the business costs of the latter. We demonstrate our approach using the AWS application suite, and demonstrate how our approach expedites the auto-scaling strategy for our use case: public transportation web sites.

This paper introduces a simple generalized formal model for patrolling games that is suitable for decision making regarding the efficient use of scarce resources in surveillance applications. The model is then mapped to a multi-agent simulation using Jason agent oriented programming language. We present the details of the multi-agent model of the game, as well as experimental results that we obtained by simulating a sample patrolling game. The main contribution of the paper is the mapping of the formal game model, as inspired by game theory, to the more practical agent-oriented programming approach, as advocated by agent-oriented software engineering.

Recently, an increasing number of public cloud vendors added Containers as a Service (CaaS) to their service portfolio. This is an adequate answer to the growing popularity of Docker, a software technology allowing Linux containers to run independently on a host in an isolated environment. As any software can be deployed in a container, the nature of containers differs and thus assorted allocation and orchestration approaches are needed for their effective execution. In this paper, we focus on containers whose execution value for end users varies over time. A baseline and two dynamic allocation algorithms are proposed and compared with the default Docker scheduling algorithm. Experiments show that the proposed approach can increase the total value obtained from a workload up to three times depending on the workload heaviness. It is also demonstrated that the algorithms scale well with the growing number of nodes in a cloud.

The paper suggests several techniques for computer network risk assessment based on Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) and attack modeling. Techniques use a set of integrated security metrics and consider input data from security information and event management (SIEM) systems. Risk assessment techniques differ according to the used input data. They allow to get risk assessment considering requirements to the accuracy and efficiency. Input data includes network characteristics, attacks, attacker characteristics, security events and countermeasures. The tool that implements these techniques is presented. Experiments demonstrate operation of the techniques for different security situations.

Blockchain is a distributed ledger system based on P2P network and originally used for a crypto currency system. The P2P network of Blockchain is maintained by full nodes which are in charge of verifying all the transactions in the network. However, most Blockchain user nodes do not act as full nodes, because work-load of full nodes is quite high for personal mobile devices. Blockchain search queries, such as confirming balance, transaction contents, and transaction histories, from many users go to the full nodes. As a result, search throughput of full nodes would be a new bottleneck of Blockchain system, because the number of full nodes is less than the number of users of Blockchain systems. In this paper, we propose an acceleration method of Blockchain search using GPUs. More specifically, we introduce an array-based Patricia tree structure suitable for GPU processing so that we can make effective use of Blockchain feature that there are no update and delete queries. In the evaluations, the proposed method is compared with an existing GPU-based key-value search and a conventional CPU-based search in terms of the throughput of Blockchain key search. As a result, the throughput of our proposal is 3.4 times higher than that of the existing GPU-based search and 14.1 times higher than that of the CPU search when the number of keys is 80 × 2~(20) and the key length is 256-bit in Blockchain search queries.

Because training a deep neural network (DNN) takes arduous amounts of time and computation, often researchers expedite the training process via distributed parallel training on GPUs. On one hand, this lower computing-to-communication ratio makes traditional data parallelism difficult to scale, and traditional model parallelism leads to low GPU utilization. Both make it difficult to obtain a higher speedup. On the other hand, multi-GPU systems exhibit complex connectivity among GPUs. Overall, workload schedulers must consider hardware topology and workload communication requirements to allocate GPU resources for optimal execution time and improved utilization in GPU clusters with heterogeneous networking. Thus, in this paper, we introduce Pipe-torch, an improved pipeline-hybrid parallelism method (using both data and model parallelism) in a heterogeneous network environment. Ultimately, the framework's model partition algorithm aims to expedite pipeline-hybrid parallelism training between heterogeneous network-connected GPUs. Experiments with four different DNN models show that Pipetorch averages 1.4x speedup compared to data parallelism.

Though parallel processing of applications related to video processing and rendering are widespread, parallel processing of audio synthesis software (also known as soft-synths) is not much researched. This paper addresses our research and experiments in parallelizing digital audio synthesizers on a commodity multicore platform where these synthesizers are most commonly used. Soft real-time requirements and overheads of parallelization are two of the competing forces in this research. As a case study, the ALSA (Advanced Linux Sound Architecture) Modular audio Synthesizer (AMS) is evaluated. AMS employs a modular approach to digital music synthesis, is often part of a standard Linux installation package, has a GUI for user interactions, and like other audio synthesizers it has a soft real-time requirement. The main intentions of parallelization are for enhancing throughput and hence stability, whereby more complex and higher quality audio can be generated. The GUI based interactive approach adds an extra challenge of a dynamic call graph that can change on-the-fly. The paper compares the pros and cons of the different techniques adopted, and highlights the advantages of parallelization. The lessons learnt can also be used in parallelizing other existing audio synthesizers and designing new parallel synthesizers from scratch.

Over the last years, deep learning architectures have gained attention by winning important international detection and classification challenges. However, due to high levels of energy consumption, the need to use low-power devices at acceptable throughput performance is higher than ever. This paper tries to solve this problem by introducing energy efficient deep learning based on local training and using low-power mobile GPU parallel architectures, all conveniently supported by the same high-level description of the deep network. Also, it proposes to discover the maximum dimensions that a particular type of deep learning architecture-the stacked autoencoder-can support by finding the hardware limitations of a representative group of mobile GPUs and platforms.

An artificial neural network (ANN) is a parallel, distributed processing system consisting of a large number of interconnected neurons. At present, artificial neural networks have been widely used in signal processing, automation, control systems, image recognition and many other fields. Usually, the realization of neural networks is based on software. However, because the software implementation method cannot achieve real-time calculation in many cases, the hardware implementation method can reflect the inherent parallel processing characteristics of neural networks. This paper proposes an ANN neural network field programmable neuron array based on the design of reusable ANN artificial neural network IP core. It not only can save a lot of hardware resources and improve processing speed, but also has a rapid development cycle and good reconfigurability and other advantages.

IoT is a distributed network of smart objects that are remotely controlled by the devices across the world. IoT is an insolent technology that growing rapidly. It will make benefits to many applications which make our life comfortable, smoother and secure. IoT devices are constrained in terms of energy, transmission range, storage capacity and processing which affects the performance of network and increases energy consumption. In order to make an energy efficient network our proposed model uses clustering mechanism with sleep scheduling technique. Gathering the data from sources increased data congestion. Routing the aggregated data based on its content over the network. Our proposed model adjusts energy consumption and improve lifetime of network by changing node's state between active/sleep modes periodically within cluster and make an efficient data transmission based on its content through cluster mechanism. By using MATLAB, stimulated our proposed model and results of simulation improve enrichments of our proposed approach by extend the network's lifetime and efficient energy utilization. MATLAB is used for performance analysis and from the results, it confirmed that proposed model prolong network's lifetime.
