Apache Kafka, which is a high-throughput distributed message processing system, has been leveraged by the majority of enterprise for its outstanding performance. Unlike common cloud-based access control architectures, Kafka service providers often need to build their systems on other enterprises' high-performance cloud platforms. However, since the cloud platform belongs to a third party, it is not necessarily reliable. Paradoxically, it has been demonstrated that Kafka's data is stored in the cloud in the plaintext form, and thus poses a serious risk of user privacy leakage. In this paper, we propose a secure fine-grained data transmission scheme called Secure Door on Cloud (SDoC) to protect the data from being leaked in Kafka. SDoC is not only more secure than Kafka's built-in security mechanism, but also can effectively prevent third-party cloud from stealing plaintext data. To evaluate the performance of the SDoC, we simulate normal inter-entity communication and show that Kafka with SDoC integration has a lower data transfer time overhead than that of Kafka with built-in security mechanism opened.

Currently, users in a blockchain system must maintain all the data on the blockchain and query the data locally to ensure the integrity of the query results. However, since data is updated in an append -only way, resulting in a huge amount of data, it will take considerable maintenance costs to users. In this paper, we present an approach to support verifiable aggregate queries on blockchain systems that alleviates both storage and computing costs for users, while ensuring the integrity of the query results. We design an accumulator-based authenticated data structure (ADS) that supports verifiable multidimensional aggregate queries (i.e., aggregate queries with multiple selection predicates). The structure is built for each block, based on which verifiable multidimensional aggregate queries within a single block or involving multiple blocks are supported. We further optimize the performance by merging ADSs on different blocks to reduce the verification time at the client side and reduce the verification object (VO) size. Extensive experiments demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of our proposed approach.

With the increasing number of cores in manycore accelerators and chip multiprocessors (CMPs), it gets more challenging to provide cache coherency efficiently. Although the snooping-based protocols are appropriate solutions to small-scale systems, they are inefficient for large systems because of the limited bandwidth. Therefore, large-scale manycores require directory-based solutions where a hardware structure called directory holds the information. This directory keeps track of all memory blocks and which cache stores a copy of these blocks. The directory sends messages only to caches that store relevant blocks and also coordinate simultaneous accesses to a cache block. As directory-based protocols scale to many cores, performance, network-on-chip (NoC) traffic, and bandwidth become major problems. In this paper, we present software mechanisms to improve the effectiveness of directory-based cache coherency in manycore and multicore systems with shared memory. In multithreaded applications, some of the data accesses do not disrupt cache coherency, but they still produce coherency messages among cores such as read-only (private) data. However, if data is accessed by at least two cores and at least one of them is a write operation, it is called shared data and requires cache coherency. In our proposed system, private data and shared data are determined at compile time, and cache coherency protocol only applies to shared data. We implement our approach in two stages. First, we use Andersen's static pointer analysis to analyze the program and mark its private instructions, i.e., instructions that load or store private data. Then, we use these analyses to decide if cache coherency protocol will be applied or not at runtime. Our simulation results on parallel benchmarks show that our approach reduces cycle count, dynamic random access memory (DRAM) accesses, and coherency traffic up to 13%.

With the rapid development of software-defined networking and programmable data plane, in-band network telemetry (INT) has attracted a lot of attention as an advanced network monitoring method. INT enables fine-grained and efficient network monitoring by encapsulating device status information into the packets. INT is divided into two types, proactive and passive, according to the source of the data packets carrying telemetry information. The proactive INT assembles large amounts of dedicated probe packets, with additional bandwidth overhead. The passive INT leverages the on-the-fly application flows, which saves the bandwidth cost but usually cannot achieve full coverage of network nodes. In this paper, we first propose a hybrid proactive-passive INT telemetry system, Hawkeye, which combines the proactive and passive INT methods together. Hawkeye leverages the advantages of the both methods and significantly saves the bandwidth cost while achieving telemetry coverage. To make it, Hawkeye divides the network topology into two parts, proactive INT network part and passive INT one, based on the historical traffic information. First, Hawkeye offloads passive telemetry tasks with the existing steady flows. Then, Hawkeye leverages a path planning algorithm, P2A, to generate the best possible probe paths to cover the rest of the network, which are not covered by passive telemetry. Simulation results show that Hawkeye can reduce the average bandwidth overheads by 55.2% and achieve 100% network link coverage for the real-world network topology, compared against the existing INT methods.

Machine learning applications are getting prevelent on various computing platforms, including cloud servers, smart phones, IoT devices, etc. For these applications, security is one of the most emergent requirements. While trusted execution environment (TEE) like ARM TrustZone has been widely used to protect critical prodecures including fingerprint authentication and mobile payment, state-of-the-art implementations of TEE OS lack the support for multi-threading and are not suitable for computing-intensive workloads. This is because current TEE OSes are usually designed for hosting security critical tasks, which are typically small and non computing-intensive. Thus, most of TEE OSes do not support multi-threading in order to minimize the size of the trusted computing base (TCB). In this paper, we propose TEEp, a system that enables multi-threading in TEE without weakening security, and supports existing multi-threaded applications to run directly in TEE. Our design includes a novel multi-threading mechanism based on the cooperation between the TEE OS and the host OS, without trusting the host OS. We implement our system based on OP-TEE and port it to two platforms: a HiKey 970 development board as mobile platform, and a Huawei Hi1610 ARM server as server platform. We run TensorFlow Lite on the development board and TensorFlow on the server for performance evaluation in TEE. The result shows that our system can improve the throughput of TensorFlow Lite on 5 models to 3.2x when 4 cores are available, with 13.5% overhead compared with Linux on average.

With the development of high-performance embedded applications, object detection algorithms are starting to be deployed to embedded devices with fewer resources, and the classification and location information they provide is the basis for making further decisions in some high-performance embedded applications, so real-time and low-power consumption are especially needed. In this paper, we propose an FPGA-based neural network ac-celerator for object detection, which improves the speed, throughput and power efficiency of the inference with little loss of accuracy. The accelerator balances the speed difference between computation and memory access. The accelerator is scalable and can be configured for CNN of any size, and is general enough to support the acceleration of YOLOv2, YOLOv3 and their Tiny versions. We deploy the Tiny YOLOv3 network on FPGA-based accelerator, CPU and GPU platforms, and compare them in terms of speed, throughput and power efficiency. For the Tiny YOLOv3 network, the accelerator delivers an FPS of 1.61 and throughput of 8.95 GOP/s, which is 23.81x, 4.11x and 3.00x better than the Intel Core i5-10210U CPU with the 00, 01 and O3 compilation optimization options respectively. With 2.11 W of power, the accelerator delivers a power efficiency of 4.24 GOP/s/W, which is 141.33x, 28.27x and 21.20x better than the Intel Core i5-10210U CPU with the 00, O1 and O3 options respectively.

With the rapid development of Internet technology, various network attack methods come out one after the other. SQL injection has become one of the most severe threats to Web applications and seriously threatens various Web application services and users data security. There are both traditional detection methods and emerging methods based on deep learning technology with higher detection accuracy for the detection of SQL injection. However, they are all for detecting a single statement and cannot determine the stage of the attack. To further improve the effect of SQL injection detection, this paper proposes an integrated detection framework for SQL injection behavior based on both text features and traffic features. We propose a SQL-LSTM model based on deep learning technology as the detection model at the text features level. Meanwhile, the features of the data traffic are merged. This work aims at distilling a systematic methodology to modernize existing sequential scientific codes with a limited re-designing effort, turning an old codebase into modern code, i.e., parallel and robust code. We propose an automatable methodology to parallelize scientific applications designed with a purely sequential programming mindset, thus possibly using global variables, aliasing, random number generators, and stateful functions. We demonstrate the methodology by way of an astrophysical application, where we model at the same time the kinematic profiles of 30 disk galaxies with a Monte Carlo Markov Chain (MCMC), which is sequential by definition. The parallel code exhibits a 12 times speedup on a 48-core platform.

With the increasingly widespread application of Internet of Things (IoT), network attacks has become a main threat of IoT devices' security. Due to the network traffic data is the carrier of information from users and devices, the traffic-based IoT malicious behavior detection has become an effective solution to prevent such threats. In order to identify malicious traffic in IoT while protecting users' personal privacy, researchers introduce Federated Learning (FL) into malicious network traffic detection. However, most of the current FL frameworks need all clients to own labeled data to train a high-performance detection model jointly. In addition, they require different clients must design the same model structure to meet the requirement of parameter sharing, which is unreasonable because each client faces problems such as data heterogeneity. And it will degrade the detection performance of some clients. In this research, Semi-Supervised Federated Learning for Malicious Traffic Detection (SFMD) is proposed, aiming to assist the clients who do not have the ability to label their data to train a high-performance model with other clients together. Besides, another key feature of this framework is that it allows each client to train its personalized model according to their own situation. The experimental results indicate that SFMD can accurately identify the attack types for the unsupervised clients without labeled data. In addition, it has achieved high accuracy compared to other anomaly detection methods.

The increasing complexity of modern and future computing systems makes it challenging to develop applications that aim for maximum performance. Hybrid parallel programming models offer new ways to exploit the capabilities of the underlying infrastructure. However, the performance gain is sometimes accompanied by increased programming complexity. We introduce an extension to PyCOMPSs, a high-level task-based parallel programming model for Python applications, to support tasks that use MPI natively as part of the task model. Without compromising application's programmability, using Native MPI tasks in PyCOMPSs offers up to 3x improvement in total performance for compute intensive applications and up to 1.9x improvement in total performance for I/O intensive applications over sequential implementation of the tasks.
