In the early phases of cyber-physical systems (CPS) development, scoping human behavior plays a significant role, especially when interactions extend beyond expected behavior. Here, it is especially challenging to develop cases that capture the full spectrum of human behavior. Up to now, identifying such behavior of humans remains a task for domain experts. We explore how one can use Large Languages Models (LLMs) in the design phase of systems to provide additional information about human-CPS interaction. Our approach proposes a preliminary ontology describing a hierarchy of types of behavior and relevant CPS components as input for prompt templates. It uses them to generate parts of human behavior descriptions, as well as a canned prompt with one variable about behavior. For demonstration, we take a smart building with a Home Energy system as the use case. An initial user evaluation shows that the behavior descriptions generated with standard and ontology-driven prompts complement each other and are useful when assisting humans. The discovered uncommon behaviors can be used to complete interaction scenarios that eventually result in a more robust CPS implementation.

The convergence of Information Technology and Operational Technology in cyber-physical systems has introduced significant cybersecurity challenges, necessitating effective knowledge transfer to ensure robust defense mechanisms. This paper presents the design and implementation of a specialized workshop aimed at enhancing cybersecurity awareness and skills among industrial stakeholders (blue collars, white collars, and managers). The workshop, developed in collaboration with a leading cybersecurity company, is structured into four key segments: an introduction to the cyber-physical system, an overview of prevalent cybersecurity threats, practical demonstrations of cyber attacks, and the implementation of countermeasures. The study provides a comprehensive analysis of the workshop's framework, detailing the cyber-physical system's architecture and the specific cybersecurity threats addressed. Participants are engaged in demonstrative activities that elucidate real-world attack scenarios and defense strategies, fostering a deeper understanding of both offensive and defensive cybersecurity techniques. Limitations such as the diversity of participant backgrounds and the complexity of the cyber-physical systems are acknowledged. Future workshops shall foresee the incorporation of more diverse threat scenarios and the creation of a mobile training unit. This study underscores the importance of practical, demonstrative training in cybersecurity education for IT/OT environments and provides a replicable model for similar educational initiatives. © 2024 The Authors. Stick exercises, which have been attracting attention for improving the health of the elderly, are usually performed in nursing homes under the guidance of nursing staff. However, in the current pandemic in which the elderly are advised to refrain from going out unnecessarily, it is desirable for each individual to be able to perform the stick exercises alone. In this study, we aim to develop a stick exercise support system that can automatically record the number of times an elderly person performs each type of stick exercise and provide feedback to improve the movement for each exercise. As a first step toward the realization of this stick exercise support system, we investigated a method for recognizing exercise movements using inertial measurement unit (IMU) sensors. In the evaluation experiment, 21 subjects performed 3 sets (10 times per set) of eight basic stick exercises. The exercise movements were classified based on the linear acceleration and quaternion data obtained from the IMU. As a result, 90 % of F-measure was achieved when using LightGBM as the learning algorithm.

Industrial Control systems (ICS) are responsible for the safety and operations of critical infrastructure such as power grids. Attacks on such systems threaten the well-being of societies, and the lives of human operators, and pose huge financial risks. To detect those attacks, process-aware attack detectors were proposed by academia and industry to verify inherent physical correlations. Such detectors will be trained by the vendors on process data from the target system, which allows malicious manipulations of the training process to later evade detection at runtime. Previously proposed attacks in this direction rely on detailed process knowledge to predict the exact attack features to be concealed. In this work, we show that even without process knowledge (i.e. being able to predict attack results), it is possible to launch training time attacks against such attack detectors. Our backdoor attacks achieve this by identifying 'alien' actuator state combinations that never occur in the training samples and injecting them with legitimate sensor data into the training set. At runtime, the attacker spoofs one of those alien actuator state combinations, which triggers (regardless of sensor values) the classification as 'normal'. To demonstrate this, we design and implement five backdoor attacks against autoencoder-based anomaly detectors for 14 attacks from the BATADAL dataset collection. Our evaluation shows that our best backdoor attack implementation can achieve perfect attack concealment and accomplish an average recall of 0.19. Compared to the performance of the detector for anomalies that are not concealed by inserted triggers, our attacks decrease the detector's recall by 0.477.

New wearable technologies come with high requirements for miniaturization and flexibility, which are usually restricted by rigid batteries. Capacitive power transfer and communication, employing the human body as a conductive medium enables energy-efficient communication and even the possibility to achieve battery-lesswearable sensors distributed on the body. This work presents as a proof-of-concept a complete system consisting of a custom-designed on-body transmitter and battery-less receiver and evaluates the power transmitted and the range achieved. We demonstrate the applicability of our prototype to a real-life scenario as a glucose level tracker even in realistic non-perfect grounding conditions. The realized design offers a power transmission of up to 2.5mW at distances of 15 cm and 5.5 mu W at 125 cm, showing the possibility of battery-less on-body edge computing applications.

The 6G vision aims for the convergence between the real and digital worlds, supported by unmatched performance in terms of transfer speeds, reliability, and responsiveness. Yet, advanced beyond 5G solutions can al-ready serve as a preamble for implementing this vision. To analyze its viability, robust scenario characterizations and testing methodologies are required. We present the design and implementation of a 6G-intended testbed for Remote Driving Applications, based on two key enabling tech-nologies: Immersive Communications and cyber-physical Twins. In particular, the cyber-physical Convergence is implemented by the combination of human-Machine In-terfaces, Haptic Feedback, and Extended Reality features in immersive cockpits for a real-time case study featuring an immersive race between mobile robots, remotely driven through a 5G private network at UPV's outdoor Velodrome. We analyze the mentioned key enabling tech-nologies, compare similar 6G testbeds, define a system architecture, and finally propose a test plan to evaluate the requirements in the context of 6G communications. © 2024 IEEE.

In commercial buildings, occupant thermal comfort is a key factor that must be optimized to provide a comfortable and productive work environment. However, current methods largely estimate thermal comfort based on preset models which do not incorporate real-time measurements or individual thermal preferences. In this work, we present a scalable system for estimating personalized thermal comfort using low-cost thermal camera based sensor nodes. This system extracts non-intrusive thermal measurements, is robust to different perspectives and environments, is easily deployable and low-cost, and can incorporate individual thermal feedback for more personalized thermal comfort estimates. In comparison with baseline methods, our system is able to improve thermal comfort estimates on the ASHRAE 7-point thermal sensation scale by 64% over baseline methods.

The lower-limb exoskeleton is promising for gait rehabilitation training and reducing metabolism. A lightweight and lexible knee exoskeleton with Bowden cables as the power transmission is designed. The designed device is highly integrated and convenient to wear, which also combines the advantages of the convenient installation of sensors in a rigid exoskeleton. The block diagram of the human-machine system is established to analyze the factors that affect the exoskeleton assistance. Based on the above analysis, a force control framework based on a position loop is proposed. Besides, the compensation strategy corresponding to the exoskeleton designed in this paper is further considered. firstly, a feedforward compensation that uses the encoder as the signal source is proposed to account for the subject's active movements. Secondly, the nonlinear deformation compensation is proposed to compensate for the human-machine interface's elastic deformation, which ensures the force loading performance. Thirdly, the iterative force control is used to compensate for the inelastic deformation. The experiments on three subjects demonstrate the effectiveness.
