distributed autonomous systems, i.e., systems that have separated distributed components, each of which, exhibit some degree of autonomy are increasingly providing solutions to naval and other DoD problems. Recently developed control, planning and resource allocation algorithms for two types of distributed autonomous systems will be discussed. The first distributed autonomous system (DAS) to be discussed consists of a collection of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) that are under fuzzy logic control. The UAVs fly and conduct meteorological sampling in a coordinated fashion determined by their fuzzy logic controllers to determine the atmospheric index of refraction. Once in flight no human intervention is required. A fuzzy planning algorithm determines the optimal trajectory, sampling rate and pattern for the UAVs and an interferometer platform while taking into account risk, reliability, priority for sampling in certain regions, fuel limitations, mission cost, and related uncertainties. The real-time fuzzy control algorithm running on each UAV will give the UAV limited autonomy allowing it to change course immediately without consulting with any commander, request other UAVs to help it, alter its sampling pattern and rate when observing interesting phenomena, or to terminate the mission and return to base. The algorithms developed will be compared to a resource manager (RM) developed for another DAS problem related to electronic attack (EA). Ibis RM is based on fuzzy logic and optimized by evolutionary algorithms. It allows a group of dissimilar platforms to use EA resources distributed throughout the group. For both DAS types significant theoretical and simulation results will be presented.

Majority of papers in the area of wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have an element of energy-efficiency and associated with it an analysis of network lifetime. Yet, there is no agreement on how to analyze the lifetime of a WSN. As a result, errors are frequently made on both sides. Some underestimate the network lifetime by an order of magnitude, while others end up overestimating the lifetime by a significant factor. This paper presents a first step towards standardizing the lifetime analysis of WSNs. We focus on WSNs deployed for always-on applications, where the problem of power management is most severe because the environment needs to be monitored continuously. Underestimation of network lifetime is common when proposing sleep-wakeup schemes, where it is frequently assumed that in the absence of a sleep-wakeup scheme, a sensor node from the Mica family lasts 3-5 days on a pair of AA batteries. We show that the same sensor node can be made to last more than 36 days, even if it is continuously monitoring the environment. Overestimation typically occurs when proposing non-sleep-wakeup power management schemes such as in-network data aggregation. Overestimation occurs because several network activities (e.g periodic routing messages) are assumed to have negligible effect on the network lifetime and therefore are ignored in the lifetime analysis. We use our recent experience in deploying ExScal (a large-scale WSN for intrusion detection) to identify major components in the network lifetime analysis. We then present a careful lifetime analysis of ExScal and show how to analyze the effects of using various non-sleep-wakeup power management schemes such as hierarchical sensing, low-power listening, and innetwork data aggregation on the network lifetime. Our lifetime analysis will be useful as a template in analyzing the lifetime of other WSNs deployed for always-on applications. © 2005 ieee.

A wireless sensor network (WSN), a type of distributed wireless ad-hoc network, is characterized by large amount of sensors and low power supply. In WSN, it is important for sensor nodes to have low transmission delay (due to large number of sensor nodes) and low power consumption (due to limited power supply). In this paper, we propose a new routing and MAC protocol - Cluster-Management and Power Efficient (CuMPE) protocol, to meet the above objectives. The routing part of CuMPE is cluster-based and uses a selective flooding algorithm to propagate transmission cost. Based on the cost information, every sensor in the network tries to establish the minimum cost path to the cluster head. The MAC part of CuMPE first finds the critical path that has the longest transmission delay to a cluster head and schedules sensor nodes using TDMA scheduling to avoid extending the critical path. Simulation results have shown that CuMPE protocol is more power efficient and has shorter transmission delay than existing protocols, such as LEACH, PEGASIS, and HIT. © 2005 ieee.

Recently, there have been demands for greater functional diversity and higher performance in the information technology infrastructure. As a result, the complexity and scale of product design in the product development phase have increased. In addition, development periods need to be reduced so products can be marketed sooner. These requirements have rapidly increased the need to simulate and analyze efficiently in order to achieve optimum designs and verification. At the same time, the needs to do massive simulations effectively become large to avoid the risks in financial business. To satisfy these requirements, there are some technical issues to be solved. For this purpose, CyberGRIP has been developed as grid problem solving environments to realize the virtualization of heterogeneous distributed computing resources. This paper describes the detail explanation of CyberGRIP, its concrete applications and results for the product development in manufacturing industries and for the currency option in financial business. © 2005 ieee.

To the best of our knowledge, for the first time is designed and demonstrated a single crystal Silicon Carbide (SiC)-based minimally invasive smart optical sensor suited for harsh environments and temperatures reaching 2500 degrees C. The novel sensor design is based on an agile wavelength source, instantaneous single wavelength interferometry, full optical power cycle data acquisition, free-space targeted laser beam, multiple single crystal thick SiC optical frontend chips, and multi-wavelength signal processing for unambiguous temperature measurements to form a fast and distributed smart optical sensor system. Experiments conducted using a 1550 nm eye safe band tunable laser and a 300 micron coating-free thick SiC chip demonstrate temperature sensing from room temperature to 1000 degrees C with a measured 1.3 degrees C resolution. Applications for the proposed sensor include use in fossil fuel-based power systems, aerospace/aircraft systems, satellite systems, deep space exploration systems, and drilling and oil mining industries.

Grid is a distributed platform that makes the utilization of distributed and powerful sharing resources for those submitted applications more conveniently. Applications designed to execute on grid frequently require the simultaneous co-allocation of multiple resources to meet performance requirement. In particular, the problem of co-allocating grid resources that span multiple administrative domains is complicated by the possibility of deadlock and the lack of means for changing information between the independent applications. Motivated by this, this paper develops a new method for fast co-allocation of grid resources. The proposed method is based on Atomic Transaction and is free from deadlock. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method yields a significant performance improvement over other existing deadlock prevention methods. © 2006 ieee.

Web services and Grid computing are technologies with a great impact these days. Both technologies are taking a syntactical based approach to describe services, and therefore, limited support is provided for service related tasks like: discovery, composition, etc. Semantic Web services try to overcome the limitations of syntactical based approaches by adding semantics to services descriptions. One of the most salient initiatives in Semantic Web services area is the Web Service Modeling Ontology (WSMO). WSMO provides a conceptual model and languages to express semantic, descriptions of services. We believe that WSMO, the conceptual model, and WSML, the associated family of languages, with some extensions and/or restrictions could be the solution for semantically describe services in Grid environment. © 2006 ieee.

Clustering is recognized as an effective topology maintenance framework to provide better scalability for Wireless sensor Networks. When loop structures are deployed to topology maintenance, it can provide better robustness and convenient route recovery, for the topology information is disseminated within a loop instead of a single node and the nature of the loop that there are two paths between each pair of nodes within a loop provides backup routes. In this paper, we propose a novel topology maintenance approach based on loop structures. The algorithm is a distributed, on-demand and configurable. It prefers a low-mobility network which is typically suitable for wireless sensor networks. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2005.

Fast matrix multiplication (FMM) algorithms to multiply two n × n matrices reduce the asymptotic operation count from O(n3) of the traditional algorithm to O(n2.38), thus on distributed memory computers, the association of FMM algorithms and the parallel matrix multiplication algorithms always gives remarkable results. Within this association, the application of FMM algorithms at interprocessor level requires us to solve more difficult problems in designing but it forms the most effective algorithms. In this paper, a general model of these algorithms will be presented and we also introduce a scalable method to implement this model on distributed memory computers. © 2005 ieee.

Peer-to-Peer file sharing applications on the Internet, such as BitTorrent, Gnutella, etc., have been immensely popular. Prior research mainly focuses on peer and content discovery, overlay topology formation, fairness and incentive issues, etc, but seldom investigates the data distribution problem which is also a core component of any file sharing application. In this paper, we present the first effort in addressing this collaborative file distribution problem and formally define the scheduling problem in a simplified context. We suggest several types of algorithms, including a novel Bipartite Matching algorithm, for solving the problem. Simulation results show that our weighted bipartite algorithm finds an optimal solution for all cases tested. Therefore, we believe our algorithm is a promising solution to be employed as the core scheduling module in P2P file sharing applications, shortening the total download time experienced by users. © 2005 ieee.
