Reprogramming of sensor networks is an important and challenging problem as it is often necessary to reprogram the sensors in place. In this paper, we propose a multihop reprogramming service designed for Mica-2/XSM motes. One of the problems in reprogramming is the issue of message collision. To reduce the problem of collision and hidden terminal problem, we propose a sender selection algorithm that attempts to guarantee that in a neighborhood there is at most one source transmitting the program at a time. Further, our sender selection is greedy in that it tries to select the sender that is expected to have the most impact. We also use pipelining to enable fast data propagation. MNP is energy efficient because it reduces the active radio time of a sensor node by putting the node into "sleep" state when its neighbors are transmitting a segment that is not of interest. Finally, we argue that it is possible to tune our service according to the remaining battery level of a sensor, i.e., it can be tuned so that the probability that a sensor is given the responsibility of transmitting the code is proportional to its remaining battery life

The decoupling of producers and consumers in the publish/subscribe paradigm lends itself well to the support of mobile users who roam about the environment with intermittent network connectivity. This paper presents the first quantitative evaluation of publisher mobility in a distributed publish/subscribe system. Our results indicate that publisher mobility breaks a fundamental assumption of publish/subscribe systems and has a significant performance impact. We formalize publisher mobility algorithms for a distributed publish/subscribe system, and develop and evaluate optimizations to the mobile publisher algorithms.

Wireless sensor networks have posed a number of challenging problems such as localization, deployment and tracking, etc. One of the interesting problems is the calculation of the coverage path for sensor networks. In this paper, we design a localized algorithm to solve the worst coverage problem first introduced by Meguerdichian et al. All nodes cooperate to construct the worst coverage path with their one-hop neighbors’ information. Also, the correctness of the algorithm is proved under the diminishing model formally.

The contribution of this work has two folds. first, we extend the current query planners' cost metric space by introducing network bandwidth cost, query deployment cost and query re-using cost; second, we develop a suite of algorithms for re-using existing query fragments under different scenarios. One of the most important reusable queries is called structure-sharable query.

In this paper, the authors introduced topology-based distributed hash tables (T-DHT) as an infrastructure for data-centric storage, information processing, and routing in ad hoc and sensor networks. T-DHTs do not rely on location information and work even in the presence of voids in the network. Using a virtual coordinate system, a distributed hash table which is strongly oriented to the underlying network topology was constructed. Thus, adjacent areas in the hash table commonly have a direct link in the network. Routing in the T-DHT guarantees reachability and introduces low hop-overhead compared with the shortest path.

Networking protocols for multi-hop wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are required to simultaneously minimize resource usage as well as optimize performance metrics such as latency and reliability. This paper explores the energy-latency-reliability trade-off for broadcast in multi-hop WSNs, by presenting a new protocol called PBBF (probability-based broadcast forwarding). PBBF works at the MAC layer and can be integrated into any sleep scheduling protocol. For a given application-defined level of reliability for broadcasts, the energy required and latency obtained are found to be inversely related to each other. Our analysis and simulation study quantify this relationship at the reliability boundary, as well as performance numbers to be expected from a deployment. PBBF essentially offers a WSN application designer considerable flexibility in choice of desired operation points

In this paper, we propose a novel approach for efficiently sensing a remote field using wireless sensor networks. Our approach, the infer algorithm, is fully distributed, has low overhead and saves considerable energy compared to using just the data aggregation communication paradigm. This is accomplished by using a distributed algorithm to put nodes into sleep mode for a given period of time, thereby trading off energy usage for the accuracy of the data received at the sink. Bayesian inference is used to infer the missing data from the nodes that were not active during each sensing epoch. As opposed to other methods that have been considered, such as wavelet compression and distributed source coding, our algorithm has lower overhead in terms of both inter-node communication and computational complexity. Our simulations show that on average our algorithm produces energy savings of 59% while still maintaining data that is accurate to within 7.9%. We also show how the parameters of the algorithm may be tuned to optimize network lifetime for a desired level of data accuracy

This paper presents a numerical solution for a mobile sensor motion trajectory scheduling problem under nonholomonic constraints of a project named MAS-net, which stands for mobile actuator-sensor network. The motivation of the MAS-net project, at the first stage, is to estimate diffusion system parameters by networked mobile sensors. Each sensor is mounted on a differential-drive mobile robot to observe the diffusing fog. In other words, this project requires to observe a parabolic distributed parameter systems (DPS) by nonholonomic networked mobile sensors. This paper reformulates this problem in the framework of optimal control and proposes a procedure to obtain a numerical solution by using RIOTS by A. Schwartz, E. Polak, and Y. Q. Chen (1997) and Matlab PDE toolbox. The objective function of this method is designed to minimize the effect of the sensing noise. Extensive simulation results are presented for illustration.

Traditional locking protocols and timestamp ordering schedulers are based on principles "first-comer-winner" and "timestamp order" to make multiple conflicting transactions serializable, respectively. A role-based access control model is used to make a system secure. A role concept shows a job function in an enterprise. In this paper, we discuss concurrency control algorithms based on the significancy of roles assigned to transactions. We first define a significantly dominant relation on roles. We discuss a role ordering (RO) scheduler based on the role concept. We evaluate the RO scheduler compared with the two-phase locking (2PL) protocol.

sensor-based applications stem from distributed sensor networks that consist of many small, spatially dispersed, communicating nodes. This contribution deals with scientific, medical, biological and industrial, sensor-based applications development support aiming at distributed components interconnected by Internet compatible intranets. A pilot application, called in this paper pressure analyzer, comprises groups of smart pressure and temperature sensors that clients can access effectively through Internet. Each sensors group is supported by an active web page with Java applets that, after downloading, provide clients with transparent and efficient access to pressure measurement services over such geographically distributed objects as large systems of gas pipes. The pressure analyzer includes several groups of smart pressure sensors complemented by temperature sensors that enable computing of temperature corrections.
