Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are difficult to program and usually run statically-installed software limiting its flexibility. To address this, we developed Agilla, a new middleware that increases network flexibility while simplifying application development. An Agilla network is deployed with no pre-installed application. Instead, users inject mobile agents that spread across nodes performing application-specific tasks. Each agent is autonomous, allowing multiple applications to share a network. Programming is simplified by allowing programmers to create agents using a high-level language. Linda-like tuple spaces are used for inter-agent communication and context discovery. This preserves each agent's autonomy while providing a rich infrastructure for building complex applications, and marks the first time mobile agents and tuple spaces are used in a unified framework for WSNs. Our efforts resulted in an implementation for MICA2 motes and the development of several applications. The implementation consumes a mere 41.6KB of code and 3.59KB of data memory. An agent can migrate 5 hops in less than 1.1 seconds with 92% reliability. In this paper, we present Agilla and provide a detailed evaluation of its implementation, an empirical study of its overhead, and a case study demonstrating its use

distributed actuation is a major application of sensor networks that relies on the information provided by the sensors and the ability of the actuators to change the environment, to try to achieve a set of desired conditions. In large scale ad hoc distributed sensor-actuator networks, traditional centralized control algorithms are undesirable due to limiting factors such as scaling, delays associated with collecting information, and energy consumption. To tackle distributed actuation problems in wireless sensor networks, groups of sensors and actuators can first be matched (clustered) efficiently and then the problem posed and solved in localized manners. In this paper, given a set of sensors and controllable sources of superposable phenomena (e.g. light and heat), we first formulate and optimally solve the distributed sensor-actuator problem as an instance of centralized quadratic programming. We then investigate localized heuristics that can achieve near optimal results while trading off message exchanges and energy consumption for accuracy and latency in obtaining the results. We also briefly discuss the clustering algorithm used as a heuristic for solving the matching problem associated with matching the sensors to the proper actuators. Light sensors and sources are used throughout the paper as an illustrating application.

A ubiquitous computing environment entails numerous embedded devices with enough computational power. Such distributed computing resources can cooperate to create applications which support users' everyday lives. Such an environment requires robust middleware that can handle a large quantity of messages, such as event data or sensor data are occurred between devices. However, the lack of middleware technologies with such functionalities has been making it difficult to create ubiquitous computing applications that we can depend on in their everyday life. In this paper, we propose a novel middleware, named RT-Dragon, which can handle numerous messages with robustness. RT-Dragon can work effectively on systems both realtime and non-realtime runtime because of the mechanism of two level priority-based task processing. In this paper additionally, we evaluate the effectiveness of RT-Dragon on non-RT runtime.

This paper presents an innovative approach to design advanced biometric systems for person identification, recognition and monitoring, with high level of privacy. The original aspect consists of a modular, structured design approach at system level, based on the use of distributed systems, multi-agent architectures, multiple computing paradigms, and adaptable/evolvable techniques, which allow for achieving a scalable structure in terms of biometric algorithms, identification quality, sensors, database complexity, database integration, and component heterogenity. Our goal is to face the specific application by using a flexible design strategy based on a systematic comprehensive view, by focusing on global optimization, adaptivity and evolvability. Advantages of the proposed approach are accuracy, confidence, scalability, opportunities for parallel processing, high performance, interoperability, fault tolerance, service continuity, biometric techniques updating, usability, and components privacy. These characteristics can be very useful for governmental agencies, enterprises, banks and all other organizations that need to protect people or control access to critical resources

In this paper we introduce a detection based security scheme for wireless sensor networks. Although sensor nodes have low computation and communication capabilities, they have specific properties such as their stable neighborhood information that allows for detection of anomalies in networking and transceiver behaviors of the neighboring nodes. We show that such characteristics can be exploited as key enablers for providing security to large scale sensor networks. In many attacks against sensor networks, the first step for an attacker is to establish itself as a legitimate node within the network. To make a sensor node capable of detecting an intruder a simple dynamic statistical model of the neighboring nodes is built in conjunction with a low-complexity detection algorithm by monitoring received packet power levels and arrival rates.

We present two transformations that convert a class of local-spin mutual exclusion algorithms on the cache-coherent model to local-spin mutual exclusion algorithms on the distributed shared memory model without increasing their time complexity. The first transformation uses registers and test-and-set objects, and does not increase the number of busy-waiting periods. The second transformation uses only registers, but contains two busy-waiting periods for each busy-waiting period of the input algorithm. The class of mutual exclusion algorithms that are applicable to the transformations was carefully defined, and formally prove the correctness of the transformations

Several routing schemes in ad hoc networks first establish a virtual backbone and then route messages via back-bone nodes. One common way of constructing such a backbone is based on the construction of a minimum connected dominating set (CDS). In this paper we present a very simple distributed algorithm for computing a small CDS. Our algorithm has an approximation factor of at most 6.91, improving upon the previous best known approximation factor of 8 due to Wan et al. [INFOCOM'02], The improvement relies on a refined analysis of the relationship between the size of a maximal independent set and a minimum CDS in a unit disk graph. This subresult also implies improved approximation factors for many existing algorithm.

Wireless sensor networks will be used in a variety of adaptive applications. Appropriate middleware is needed to support the development of adaptive WSNs applications. In this paper, we introduce a middleware architecture that facilitates the development of adaptive WSNs applications. The whole architecture is event-driven and a kind of adapted ECA rules model lies at the core of the architecture. We discuss the structure of this kind of adapted ECA rules and how to implement the ECA rules in the architecture. The programming model that centers on constructing ECA rules is also discussed.
