Recently, context-aware computing with information appliances is the topic of many research efforts. In order to realize context-aware systems, it is necessary to describe rules, each of which consists of (1) transition condition for identifying a specific context, and (2) actions to be executed when the condition holds. However, in an ordinary home without IT specialists, it would be too complicated for each user to specify feasible rules by choosing an appropriate combination of sensors and actions, since possible combinations are so many and he/she may have even no idea on functionalities of sensors or devices. Also, multiple users may want to control the same device at the same time in different ways. In this paper, we propose a framework and a rule-based language for simply and intuitively specifying feasible rules for context-aware control of information appliances. Our framework includes mechanisms for retrieving sensors/devices to specify a condition of a rule and for detecting a conflict over multiple rules. Our prototype implementation on a PC achieves practically sufficient performance for these operations.

Meta data - data about data - improves the value of the operational data by giving applications and users additional information on the data's origin, its precision or staleness. We outline the benefits of modeling meta data in context models: it can be used for resource finding, enhanced data selection, trust and data quality issues and sensor fusion. We show how meta data included into an object-based context model influences the data modeling and the selection process in the query language. Finally, we describe our implementation of the presented functionality in the Nexus platform

In this paper we address the problem of synthesizing controllers that have to be implemented distributively and have structure. The effect of sub-controller to sub-controller communication noise on stability and performance is considered. Using an observer based controller parameterization, we provide suitable stabilizing sub-controller architectures that directly take into account the effect of communication noise on performance. In particular, the overall performance optimization can be cast as a convex problem in the Youla-Kucera parameter Q. Similar results hold for banded controller structures, i.e., when there is also a delay in the subsystem to subsystem communication

Mobile agent technology supports object migration from one site to another autonomously and proactively, performing its designated location-dependent tasks. Although the concept of proactive mobility has recently been demonstrated in several research prototypes, there is a lack of formal treatment of such mobility from the perspective of a distributed programming language. How to specify, model and reason about travel itineraries of mobile agents is fundamentally important for the development of secure and reliable mobile agent systems. In this paper, first, we introduce an itinerary language, MAIL, to model the mobile behavior of proactive agents. The language is structured and compositional so that an itinerary can be constructed recursively from primitive itineraries. We then define the operational semantics of the language in terms of a set of inference rules and prove that MAIL is expressive enough for most migration patterns. Finally, we show that MAIL is amenable to formal methods to reason about mobility and verify correctness and safety properties.

There are many trials to provide an optimal route for minimum energy consumption in a wireless sensor network. Currently, however, the mechanisms to find minimum energy property graph (MEPG) do not properly take into account the efficiency in time and storage, the optimality in results, and the feasibility in real systems. In this paper, we propose an efficient and first optimal algorithm to find the MEPG, in which all minimum energy paths are included, not only significantly reducing its total number of edges, but also obtaining an optimal result in O(VlogV+E). We also develop power aware data-centric routing protocol characterized by minimum energy consumption and longer lifetime.

Embedded systems have become integral parts of a diverse range of systems. Unfortunately, research on embedded system security, in general, and intrusion detection, in particular, has not kept pace. Embedded systems are, by nature, application specific and therefore frameworks for developing application-specific intrusion detection systems for distributed embedded systems must be researched, designed, and implemented. In this paper, we present a configurable middleware-based intrusion detection framework. first, we present a system model and a concrete implementation of a highly configurable intrusion detection framework that is integrated into MicroQoSCORBA, a highly configurable middleware framework developed for embedded systems. Our framework autogenerates application-specific intrusion detection systems by exploiting application-specific information accessible to the middleware framework (e.g., object interfaces and method signatures). Next, a set of configurable intrusion detection mechanisms suitable for embedded systems is presented. A performance evaluation of these mechanisms is presented at the end of the paper.

A middleware named EnGrid for distributed computing has been developed. The EnGrid employs the notion of pure peer-to-peer (P2P) for ease of use, not for sharing computer resources across the world as in conventional P2P. We have also developed three PSE systems on EnGrid for civil engineering applications: parameter sweep system for finite element method (FEM), parameter optimization system for FEM, and the visualization system for geological sections of 3 dimensional models. We show that the calculation time of these systems can be shortened by distributed computing on EnGrid. Due to its general nature, EnGrid will be useful not only for civil engineering but also in other fields as well

This paper presents a bus level SystemC model of an avionics mission system data bus. The mission system is a very complex distributed computer network consisting of mission control computer, radars, an array of subsystems and sensors. The data bus plays a central role in the system as it carries all the information between the system components. Therefore modeling the bus at an appropriate level of abstraction using appropriate technology is very important for evaluation of the performance of both the bus and the entire system. We explore the benefits of using SystemC in modeling such a critical data bus. The developed model has been validated for various payloads and system size. The enhanced features of SystemC makes the model more efficient in some respect compared to models developed using conventional hardware description languages.

This paper considers a scenario where multiple antenna base stations use transmit beamforming to communicate with single antenna mobiles with minimum receive signal-to-interference ratio (SIR) constraints. In this system, minimizing the total power expenditure requires solving a non-convex optimization problem. A semi-definite program (SDP) relaxation can be used to convert the non-convex problem to a centralized SDP that can be solved efficiently and optimally with convex optimization techniques. Using the properties of the dual of this SDP relaxation, a two-stage iterative algorithm is proposed to solve the decentralized version of the problem. In the first stage, limited amount of centralized feedback is used to find the optimum beamforming directions through distributed eigenvalue computations. The second stage uses the distributed autonomous power control technique proposed by Foschini and Miljanic for single antenna systems.

Advances in distributed service-oriented computing and global communications have formed a strong technology push for large-scale data integration among organizations and enterprises. However, concerns about data privacy become increasingly important for large-scale mission-critical data integration applications. Ideally, given a database query spanning multiple private databases, the authors wished to compute the answer to the query without revealing any additional information of each individual database apart from the query result. In practice, this constraint can be relaxed to allow efficient information integration while minimizing the information disclosure. In this paper, the authors proposed an efficient decentralized peer-to-peer protocol for supporting aggregate queries over multiple private databases while respecting the privacy constraints of participants. The paper has three main contributions. first, it formalizes the notion of loss of privacy in terms of information revealed at individual participating databases. Second, it presents a novel probabilistic decentralized protocol for topk selection across multiple private databases that minimizes the loss of privacy. Third, it experimentally evaluates the protocol in terms of its correctness, efficiency and privacy characteristics
