Smart transducers and network infrastructures are pillars of the IoT. Transducers play a fundamental role in providing measurements to monitoring and control chains in industry. Industry 4.0 specifications require that measurement information be always available for the application layer whatever be the source and the physical channel. ieee 1451 is a family of standards edited with the aim of introducing the plug and play approach in the field of distributed measurement systems and wireless sensor networks. At first, a brief summary of the ieee 1451 introduces fundamental concepts like Transducer Interface Data Sheet (TEDS), Network Capable Application Processor (NCAP) and Transducer Interface Module (TIM). Then, a sight to the ieee 21451.001 allows a novel approach to edge computing to be described. Finally, some examples of application of this new approach to typical digital signal processing problems are reported in the paper.

The opportunistic spectrum access (OSA) algorithms allow secondary users (SUs) to exploit vacant channels with an aim to maximize overall spectrum utilization/throughput. The design of OSA algorithm is challenging for ad hoc networks due to lack of coordination among SUs and unknown channel statistics. It becomes even more challenging for the dynamic networks where the SUs can enter or leave the network any time without prior agreement. Most of the existing algorithms assume either prior knowledge of the number of SUs or need wideband sensing to sense all channels simultaneously to guarantee optimal channel allocation among SUs. Our goal in this paper is to develop distributed OSA algorithm for dynamic ad hoc networks that offers higher throughput without compromising on the number of SUs collisions. The proposed distributed algorithm is based on multi-player multi-arm bandit framework and they allow SUs to independently estimate the number of other SUs and channel statistics. We derive the upper bounds on the throughput loss (regret) and number of collisions. Exhaustive synthetic results and experimental results on universal software radio peripherals (USRP) based testbed validate our claims and superiority of the proposed algorithm.

As the number and hours of videos available within an organisation increases, as well as it's demand, the need for fast video streaming applications arises. Cloud based services are not cost effective and are not an ideal choice for storing the ever-increasing video data that is usually stored and used only within a particular organisation, like a University. Hence, this paper proposes a web based system design to store and stream videos at a small-scale within an organisation. To improve the video viewing experience for the user, the system is flexible to handle sudden changes, like increase in number of requests. The system requires the use of a cluster of servers to deliver the content as a single server cannot handle the load as number of requests increases. This requires effective load distribution among the servers. This paper proposes a way to design this system for adaptive video streaming. This system is highly scalable and can handle high loads, i.e. a higher number of users connecting to the application simultaneously. This paper proposes an algorithm called inter-server load balancing algorithm with Adaptive Agent-based load balancing to solve this problem. The algorithms also incorporates dynamic video resolution delivery techniques to ensure smooth viewing experience in the whole user experience irrespective of the network speed and bandwidth.

Hand hygiene is crucial in preventing the spread of infections and diseases. Lack of hand hygiene is one of the major reasons for healthcare associated infections (HAIs) in hospitals. Adherence to hand hygiene compliance by the workers in the food business is very important for preventing food-borne illness. In addition to healthcare settings and food businesses, hand washing is also vital for personal well-being. Despite the importance of hand hygiene, people often do not wash hands when necessary. Automatic detection of hand washing activity can facilitate just-in-time alerts when a person forgets to wash hands. Monitoring hand washing practices is also essential in ensuring accountability and providing personalized feedback, particularly in hospitals and food businesses. Inertial sensors available in smart wrist devices can capture hand movements, and so it is feasible to detect hand washing using these devices. However, it is challenging to detect hand washing using wrist wearable sensors since hand movements are associated with a wide range of activities. In this paper, we present HAWAD, a robust solution for hand washing detection using wrist wearable inertial sensors. We leverage the distribution of penultimate layer output of a neural network to detect hand washing from a wide range of activities. Our method reduces false positives by 77% and improves F1-score by 30% compared to the baseline method.

The growth in the number of traffic accidents has become a cause for concern in urban centers. As a result of the increase in population in large cities and the number of vehicles, the consequences of accidents and congestion can be even more significant, considering the impacts on the economy, environment and people's quality of life. Therefore, aiming to minimize these impacts, we present ALIVE, a distributed and Vanet-based solution that reduces congestion caused by different sources and, especially, from accident sources, contributing to efficient urban mobility in smart cities. The solution performs the detection of accidents and the dissemination of warning messages in multiple hops. Besides, the system can share the road traffic information with the nearby streets to improve traffic efficiency. We evaluated the proposed solution with PANDORA and NRR Traffic Management solutions. Simulation results indicate that the proposed solution reduces the average travel time, time lost, and the number of transmitted messages.

In this paper, we consider the problem of designing a novel ATTack scheme under charger cApture attaCK(ATTACK) in wireless rechargeable sensor networks. That is, there are a number of wireless chargers with directional antenna and rechargeable directional devices deployed in the 2D plane. An intelligent adversary selects a limited number of chargers to be captured and adjust the compromised chargers' power factor such that the overall attacking utility of devices is maximized. To solve our ATTACK problem, we investigate an attacking algorithm with a constant approximation ratio with lightweight timing complexity. We conduct simulation experiments to verify the performance of our proposed attacking algorithm. The results shows that our proposed attacking algorithm can outperform the comparison algorithm by 69.95%.

Underwater Optical Wireless sensor Networks (UOWSNs) are gaining an increasing demand in industrial and commercial applications as they can achieve high-speed communication. However, prior arts concentrate on promoting the performance of UOWSNs, while the reliability issue has not been fully addressed. In this paper, we propose a novel reliable data delivery scheme based on a cluster structure. first, we determine the orientation of each sensor for directional optical communication, which aims to establish reliable next-hop links among sensors. We formalize such an orientation problem into a submodular function maximization problem and propose a greedy method with an approximation ratio guarantee to solve it. Then, a cluster head designation scheme is developed to improve the data delivery success rate while minimizing the number of cluster heads. Finally, extensive simulations are conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme. The results reveal that compared with other algorithms, the proposed scheme can ensure a data delivery success rate of over 98.5 % while only keeping 45.3% fewer cluster heads. Furthermore, test-bed experiments are carried out to verify the applicability of the proposed scheme in practical applications.

This paper investigates the moving target localization problem in distributed multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar systems using bistatic range (BR) and bistatic range rate (BRR) measurements, which can be obtained via some local sensor signal processing methods. In the first stage, the cost function of the localization problem is re-formulated by augmenting the unknown vector, and then initial estimates of the target position and velocity are given. In the second stage, the estimation error terms of the first stage are estimated by the weighted least square (WLS) technique. To the end, the target position and velocity are refined by subtracting the estimation errors from the outputs of the first stage. Numerical simulation results corroborate the theoretical developments. © 2021 ieee.

In order to solve the limitations of limited sensing, communication, computing resources and energy supply in wireless sensor networks, a lot of basic research and development work have been carried out to study the optimal containment control problem of multi-agent systems with unknown disturbances. In this paper, through problem conversion, the robust containment control problem of the multi-agent system under unknown disturbances is first transformed into the optimal containment control problem of an auxiliary system, and a control method based on adaptive dynamic programming is proposed to solve the optimal containment control problem of multi-agent systems. Meanwhile, a VI algorithm for solving the optimal solution of the coupled DTHJB equation is proposed too. Then an actorcritic network is used to calculate the iterative solution by way of online learning with only data input and output. Finally, the simulation results verify the effectiveness of the proposed distributed control design. © 2021 ieee.

Due to its capacity to manage big datasets and enable real-time decision-making across a variety of areas, online real-time distributed machine learning has attracted considerable attention in recent years. This research article gives a thorough investigation into the difficulties and possibilities related to the fusion of distributed computing and online learning paradigms. To validate the proposed concepts, the paper presents a case study demonstrating the real-time sensor data prediction in the event that a sensor malfunctions. In a complex organization, a single faulty sensor might shut down the entire system, which could result in different levels of loss. Using the idea of “stacking,” where the predictions from various machine learning models on the same dataset were mixed, it was an attempt to address this problem. Because of this, it may be possible to make predictions in real time without using extremely powerful computers. For the purpose of this task, data from 52 IoT sensors were used and two tiers of machine learning models. 51 distinct Machine Learning models make up the first level, each of which has been trained to forecast the values of a single sensor. Using the predictions made by the models in the level before, a machine learning meta-model was trained at the second level. Overall, this research paper offers insights into the design considerations, algorithmic choices, and performance evaluation aspects required for successful implementation.
