With the onset of the Internet the perception of computing systems in general has revolutionised. Areas of research have migrated from developing nodes to building networks - thus requiring the need for a variety of information processing techniques, such as clustering, classification, dependency modelling and others. However, the applications of sensor networks are yet to evolve in such proportions. Some of the primary constraints being the resources available in an embedded environment, the need to dynamically configure services to carry out a variety of tasks, communication interfaces and sensing and monitoring techniques. This paper discusses a holonic analysis to aid in mitigating ill-structured and often problematic situations that are often characterized by uncertainty in reasoning and the varying nature of relationships with associated elements. The proposed methodology is a synergy between the classic model derived from soft systems methodology (SSM) and the model of systemic analysis through familiar entities (SAFE). Development of an intelligent security system (ISS) has been considered to be an ideal test-bed for this synergy to go through the phases of problem definition and exploration, development of conceptual models and generation of insight to stimulate acceptable and feasible changes. The technical aspect of this system encompasses the mode of query processing and surveillance through a structured sensor network set up with the aid of distributed services and network protocols.

In March 2004, recognizing the importance of sensor networks, the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology launched a joint effort to investigate both fundamental and practical research issues in sensor networks. The goal of this research is to build lightweight optimized sensor systems on a massive scale, namely the BLOSSOMS project. The objective of this research project is to identify research issues at all levels from practical applications down to the design of sensor nodes. This paper reports the status of the project as of April 2005. first, other than making MOTE-compatible sensor nodes, this project has studied the hardware and software co-design and the associated "sensor node on a chip" technology with the aim to make sensor nodes small in size, light in weight, cheap in cost, and low in power consumption. Second, additional toolkits for simulation/emulation and evaluation of sensor networks have been developed to support research at different levels. Third, a number of applications have been investigated and implemented since the launch of this project, and this paper will address two of them. One is an embedded remote health care system based on wireless sensor network technologies to introduce a scalable wireless personal medical network around human's body. The other is a moving object counting system based on an ultrasonic sensor network, which can be used but not limited to crowd estimation and traffic monitoring and coordination.

This paper illustrates how networking protocols can inadvertently exacerbate obstacles to providing real-time guarantees for distributed problem solving in wireless mobile and sensor networks. We analyze the effects of control packet timing on providing quality of service guarantees. Inappropriate timing of control packets gives rise to synchronizations that result in sharp increases and decreases in throughput with small changes in node speed. Such synchronizations can seriously jeopardize network performance with direct effect on real-time guarantees. This paper introduces these synchronizations, analyzes them and suggests ways to modify the control packet timing to overcome them. These analyses include investigating the role of buffering at the network layer and its impact on network throughput. We analyze these effects and evaluate our protocol enhancements through simulation studies.

distributed or networked systems become rapidly intractable as their size augments. This is due to the combi- natorial explosion taking place in the state space, but also in the trajectory space. The latter is reinforced by the amount of concurrency in the system (the fact that several non related events can occur simultaneously). We describe a triple strategy to extend standard monitoring approaches to such systems. We first use a true concurrency semantics to represent trajectories of the system. We then describe a very compact data structure to handle sets of trajectories, that we call the trellis of the system. This notion generalizes to distributed systems the standard notion of trellis of an automaton, where one dimension is time, and the other dimension encodes possible states at each time. Finally, we show that trellises have nice factorization properties, that allow the design of distributed monitoring approaches. In other words, a problem like state estimation for example, can be solved by parts, component per component, provided interactions between components are properly handled. We illustrate the approach on a distributed diagnosis problem.

Group key management in mobile wireless networks faces new challenges due to the mobility of group members. Current proposed mobile GKM algorithms assume parts of fixed backbone and are completely centralized. This does not fit pure MANET requirements, that are decentralized and infrastructureless networks. To overcome this weakness, we present a protocol designed to provide a virtual backbone in order to use current mobile GKM protocols in MANET. Simulation results are presented, and the performance evaluation shows that the presented protocol quickly adapts to dynamic topologies.

In this paper, we propose a new approach for efficient and real-time tracking of the moving objects in sensor networks by mining the movement log. In our approach, we first conduct the hierarchical clustering to form a hierarchical model for the sensor nodes. Secondly, the movement logs of the moving objects are analyzed by a data mining algorithm to obtain the movement rules, which are then used to predict the next position of a moving object. Besides, we use the multi-level structure to represent the hierarchical relations among sensors so as to achieve the goal of keeping tracking of moving objects in real-time. Through experimental evaluation on various simulation conditions, the proposed method is shown to deliver excellent performance in terms of both energy efficiency and timeliness.

In peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing systems, the participating peers share the files with others. Two steps are needed for file sharing: first, a routing request is generated and sent to other peers by using a routing algorithm. The feedback received by the client contains the location information of the requested files; second, the client retrieves the file from one or more peers which have a copy of that file. Routing algorithms have great impact on the overall system performance, distributed hash table (DHT) based routing algorithms provide an elegant and efficient mechanism and become popular in recent years. However, two problems exist in DHT algorithms. first, to find out the location information, in some cases, the routing request may traverse distant peers around the world; second, in case of multiple copies of the requested file stored on different peers, there's no way to figure out which peer is the topologically closest to the client. Thus, the client may have to download the file from a remote peer and suffer from long retrieve latency. In this paper, we propose a hierarchical routing and retrieving algorithm to relieve these problems. The peers' topological information is utilized. Our algorithm is able to find out the closest copy for any routing requests. The simulation results show our strategy can significantly improve the system routing and retrieval performance.

Current tracking applications in sensor networks lack bi-directional communications with mobile objects. They have a passive communication relationship with unidirectional location data messages routed from mobile objects to the central processing node. In order for an object tracking system to be an "active" tracking system, where the user of the system is able to control the mobile objects in various ways, the system first needs an efficient way to deliver control messages to a mobile object, other than a simple flooding of the control messages. This paper presents an efficient detection method for multiple mobile nodes, which yields a reduction in the number of flooding messages by adopting the hybrid solution of combining a fill-scale flooding and a constrained flooding for the delivery of control messages. Simulation shows that our solution provides about 90% to 10% of reduction on both energy consumption and network traffic comparing to full-scale flooding when the number of mobile nodes increases by 1 to 9.

Most of bioinformatics data distributed on the Internet is organized in an unstructured manner, which makes it hard to construct applications that need to integrate them. In this paper, we proposed an XML schema based data indexing mechanism to integrate sequence databases stored in a DHT overlay network. The construction of large-scale distributed applications therefore can be greatly simplified with the support of structured distributed data. We present a system that can seamlessly integrate sequence databases and computing resources together to provide BLAST query services based on the data indexing mechanism. Our experiments show that, with a data centric scheduling algorithm to improve the processor utilization, the BLAST service can achieve scalable high throughput
