A new approach for the computation of probability distributions for coupled first order chemical reactions is introduced. The approach is based on system theory, where the system states are chemical species and the signals are probabilities. We derive the transfer functions of the so defined systems and show that they can be applied to various reaction environments. The use of block diagrams offers a clear, visual, and convenient way to decompose a complicated reaction system into simpler sub-systems and vice versa. Since the state of the system is defined as a molecule species instead of molecule population, with this method, one can study chemical reactions involving any number of molecules.

This paper presents an efficient technique for placement and routing of sensors/actuators and processing units in a grid network. The driver application that we present is a medical jacket which requires an extremely high level of robustness and fault tolerance. The power consumption of such jacket is another key technological constraint. Our proposed interconnection network is a mesh of wires. A jacket made of fabric and wires would be susceptible to accidental damage via tears. By modeling the tears, we evaluate the probability of having failures on every segment of wires in our mesh interconnection network. Then we study two problems of placement and routing in the sensor networks such that the fault tolerance is maximized while the power consumption is minimized. We develop efficient integer linear programming (ILP) formulations to address these problems and perform both placement and routing simultaneously. This ensures that the solution is a lower bound for both problems. We evaluate the effectiveness of our proposed techniques on a variety of benchmarks.

A distributed problem solving environment (PSE) is proposed to help users solve partial differential equation (PDE) based problems in scientific computing. The system inputs a problem description and outputs a program flow, a C-language source code for the problem and also a document for the program. Each module is distributed on distributed computers. The PSE contains all the information of the problem, PDEs, discretization scheme, mesh information, equation manipulation results, designed program structure, variable and constant definitions and program itself. Therefore the documentation support module generates a document for the generated program and the problem itself in the PSE. The module liaison module generates an adapter module among the distributed PSE modules. The job execution service module deploys programs generated or prepared on distributed computer resources and helps users run the programs on the distributed computers. The concept of the distributed PSE extends the potential of conventional PSE systems

Mobile health systems can extend the enterprise computing system of the healthcare provider by bringing services to the patient any time and anywhere. We propose a model-driven design and development methodology for the development of the m-health components in such extended enterprise computing systems. The methodology applies a model-driven design and development approach augmented with formal validation and verification to address quality and correctness and to support model transformation. Work on modelling applications from the healthcare domain is reported. One objective of this work is to explore and elaborate the proposed methodology. At the University of Twente we are developing m-health systems based on body area networks (BANs). One specialization of the generic BAN is the health BAN, which incorporates a set of devices and associated software components to provide some set of health-related services. A patient has a personalized instance of the health BAN customized to their current set of needs. A health professional interacts with their patients' BANs via a BAN professional system. The set of deployed BANs are supported by a server. We refer to this distributed system as the BAN System. The BAN system extends the enterprise computing system of the healthcare provider. Development of such systems requires a sound software engineering approach and this is what we explore with the new methodology. The methodology is illustrated with reference to modelling activities targeted at real implementations. In the context of the awareness project BAN implementations are tested in a number of clinical settings including epilepsy management and management of chronic pain.

Intelligent space (iSpace) is a relatively new concept to effectively use distributed sensors, actuators, robots, computing processors and information technology over communication networks. iSpace is a large scale mechatronics system by integrating sensors, actuators, and control algorithms in a communication system using knowledge from various engineering disciplines such as automation and control, hardware and software design, image processing, communication and networking. This paper describes a project "Johnny6 plays fetch in iSpace" to prototype an iSpace at North Carolina State University. The description includes hardware, software and networking algorithms used for this project. Different challenges such as time delay issues in the time sensitive application of iSpace is also discussed

In this paper, we study the important issues for execution of real-time queries in a wireless sensor system in which sensor nodes are distributed to monitor the events that have occurred in the environment. Three important objectives in processing the real-time queries are: (1) to minimize the number of missed deadlines, (2) to minimize the processing costs, especially in data communication;and (3) to provide temporally consistent sensor data values for query execution. To reduce the data transmission cost and delay time in gathering the right versions of data items for a query, we propose the Parallel Data Shipping with Priority Transmission (PAST) scheme to determine where and how to execute a real-time query. To meet the deadlines of the queries, a deadline-driven priority policy is adopted to schedule the transmission of sensor data versions to the coordinator node. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004.

The National Institute of Information and Communications Technology of Japan completed a real-life testbed, called the "ubiquitous home", for home context-aware service experiments in 2004. From the viewpoint of sensor ubiquity, the Ubiquitous Home is superior to other similar testbeds. At the Ubiquitous Home, experimenters can collect real-life data as if living in their own house, not in a laboratory. This paper introduces an overview and detailed sensor arrangement of the Ubiquitous Home. Two cases from several progressing experiments are also presented. The first case is on connecting networked appliances; the second concerns the combination of wearable devices and the Ubiquitous Home sensors to record user behavior.

The UNICORE grid technology provides a seamless, secure and intuitive access to distributed grid resources such as computational or storage related resources. In addition, its extensible character through application-specific plug-ins and its enhancements developed in various European-funded projects leads to the UNICORE technology that is used in daily production at many supercomputer centers and research facilities world-wide today. In this paper we present an enhancement that provides the dynamic capabilities of a secure shell terminal within the UNICORE grid technology while single sign-on remains. This enhancement allows the integration of the dynamic work-behavior of scientists, or existing scientific applications, to be more integrated into the usual workflow with UNICORE and therefore in collaborative grid environments. As a well-known tool in the scientific community, a secure shell terminal provides the most flexible way of working on remote systems that no graphical user interface or advanced tooling in grid computing can ever provide

Scheduling divisible workloads in distributed systems has been one of the interesting research problems over the last few years. Most of the scheduling algorithms previously introduced are based on the master-worker model. However, the majority of these algorithms assume that workers are dedicated machines, which is a wrong assumption in distributed environments such as Grids. In this work, we propose a dynamic scheduling methodology that takes into account the three prominent aspects of Grids: heterogeneity, dynamicity, and uncertainty. Our contribution is threefold. first, we present an analytical model for processing local and Grid tasks at each non-dedicated worker. Second, we present a simple prediction method to forecast the available CPU capacity and bandwidth at each worker. Third, we introduce a dynamic, multi-round scheduling algorithm.
