PSE has become increasingly important as the computer environment has become ever more complex. In addition, the development of multi-physics calculations has complicated software systems, and an environment in which multi-simulation codes can be integrated has also become important in the software business. Because of this, we here propose a visualization PSE for multi-physics simulation. We are not proposing a new visualization tool for it, but an integration environment to merge the outputs of two or more existing visualization software visually. We developed a prototype which merges multi-outputs from any OpenGL programs without recompiling or re-linking by using the GLR (GL-DLL replacement) technique. And the performance characteristics of the system were examined

In this paper, a novel hybrid system with a local feedback control architecture for a wheeled mobile manipulator (WMM) is proposed to seek a target and grasp it within an unknown indoor environment. The active behaviors of a WMM are able to explore environment, lock target, self-localization and avoid obstacles. Initially, an ingenious hybrid model which captures the continuous dynamics of the WMM and the event-driven collision-avoiding goal seeking process is established. Next, a two-level control architecture is devised for the WMM system, where the first level mainly handles sensor feedback subject to sensor fusion, whereas the second level is responsible for providing a well performed supervisory control that can manipulate all available surrounding resources to successfully accomplish the aforementioned mission. In the Advanced Control Lab of Dept. of Electrical Engineering at the National Taiwan University, an actual WMM is developed, named The Treasure Hunter (TTH), which is able to hunt treasures in an unknown environment whereby the effectiveness of the proposed approach is satisfactorily demonstrated.

This research proposes to modernize a legacy software system by using Web services as the main building blocks of the software reengineering. For this purpose, a legacy theorem proof checking and derivation tool called Bertie3 is reengineered in terms of service-oriented architecture, service-oriented componentization, and external data representation and serialization. With the Web services of derivation checking engines and first-order markup languages, a minimal amount of development time can be spent working on well-known and well-developed components. More time can be spent updating the features that make the tool unique. This case study shows that modernizing a software system with Web services will allow the business components of the system to be easily expanded and integrated with other application components for future demands.

Peer-to-peer (P2P) file-sharing has become the killer application in the Internet with respect to traffic volume which is even surpassing Web usage. This characteristic makes P2P commercially attractive to network operators interested in increased traffic. In parallel, the demand for wireless services has caused wireless networks to grow enormously. We assume that P2P file-sharing will be mapped onto mobile environments by its users. This results in a mobile P2P file-sharing service. In this paper, we examine the feasibility of the eDonkey file-sharing service in GPRS and UMTS mobile networks, detect problems of the interaction between P2P and the mobile network, and outline first solutions to overcome them. The goal is the analysis of feasibility for an Internet-based file-sharing application in mobile networks and to provide real-world measurements. The measurements have been carried out in networks of two German GPRS network operators and, for the first time, for a UMTS network.

By combining automatic environment sensing and experimental data collection with broker based messaging middleware, a system has been produced far the real-time monitoring of experiments whilst away from the lab. Changes in the laboratory environment are encapsulated as simple messages, which are published using an MQTT compliant broker. Clients subscribe to the MQTT stream, and perform a data transform on the messages; this may be to produce a user display or to change the format of the message for republishing. For example, an MQTT client written for the Java MIDP platform can be run on a smart-phone with a GPRS Internet connection, freeing us from the constraints of the network. We present an overview of the technologies used, and how these are helping chemists make the best use of their time

Context-awareness and personalisation are important concepts that are essential cornerstones in future systems providing pervasive services. These two concepts are closely interrelated and dependent on each other for fully functional context-aware personalised services. Daidalos is a European research project in the area of 3G and beyond, which aims to combine heterogeneous networks in a transparent and seamless way, and develop a pervasive environment for applications and end-users on top of this. The first phase of implementation has produced a basic system that is currently being developed further. This paper outlines the basic pervasive service platform architecture and describes the context-awareness and personalisation features that are being implemented in Daidalos.

Given a wireless mobile ad hoc network (MANET), we present a self-stabilizing optimal local routing (SOLR) algorithm. Our claim of optimality is based on the minimum distance. The optimal routing is done with respect to the t closest nodes (called t-set). The locality is maintained with respect to the t-set, not with the direct neighbors. The algorithm is transparent to what the distance means: can be either the real distance, or the number of hops. The value of t is application dependent, and is decided in advance. t is n (where n is the upper bound on the maximum number of nodes in the network) when each node needs to know the shortest paths to all other nodes. t is less than n when nodes need to know the network only partially. A self-stabilizing system has the ability to automatically recover to normal behavior in case of transient faults, without a centralized control. Each node can start in some arbitrary state and with no knowledge of the network architecture, but still eventually computes a correct routing table for the t-closest nodes (t-set). The space complexity per node of SOLR, is O((t+/spl delta/)log(n)) bits (where /spl delta/ is the node degree) with a total of O(n(t+/spl Delta/)log(n)) bits (where /spl Delta/ is the maximum node degree) for the whole network. The stabilization time of the SOLR, algorithm is O(d+c) time units (where d is the network diameter and c is a large constant depending on some local computation). SOLR, can easily work for optimal on-demand routing by considering the set of nodes for which the shortest paths are desired instead of the t closest nodes. Also, it can be extended to a global routing protocol by using features specific to other protocols (e.g., hierarchical routing, cluster routing, interval routing, etc.).

The goal of the presented project Junction Flow is the development of an innovative pilot system for automated passenger flow analysis. Most critical transportation junctions are monitored using image understanding from visual surveillance and AI based trajectory analysis. With this mobile and continuously employable transport telematics system, the transfer and change behaviour of passengers at transportation nodes within the public transport system is automatically gathered and analyzed. This allows to continuously determine current and accurate passenger flow data with little effort, either regularly, on short term notice or over long periods of time. While the corresponding project Junction Flow is in its early stages we provide a thorough overview on the conceptual framework of the system, describe the functional system architecture and both already implemented and targeted interpretation capabilities within a cognitive vision system controlling a distributed sensor network of surveillance cameras. The preliminary outline of the computer vision system demonstrates first experimental results with promising performance by applying an innovative methodology for passenger tracking for the analysis of passenger junction flows.

Peer-to-peer grids that seek to harvest idle cycles available throughout the Internet are vulnerable to hosts that fraudulently accept computational tasks and then maliciously return arbitrary results. Current strategies employed by popular cooperative computing grids, such as SETI@Home, rely heavily on task replication to check results. However, result verification through replication suffers from two potential shortcomings: (1) susceptibility to collusion in which a group of malicious hosts conspire to return the same bad results and (2) high fixed overhead incurred by running redundant copies of the task. In this paper, we first propose a scheme called Quiz to combat collusion. The basic idea of Quiz is to insert indistinguishable quiz tasks with verifiable results known to the client within a package containing several normal tasks. The client can then accept or reject the normal task results based on the correctness of quiz results. Our second contribution is the promotion of trust-based task scheduling in peer-to-peer grids. By coupling a reputation system with the basic verification schemes - Replication and Quiz - a client can potentially avoid malicious hosts and also reduce the overhead of verification for trusted hosts.

Clusters of workstations are one of the most suitable resources to assist e-scientists in the execution of large-scale experiments that demand processing power. The utilization rate of these machines is usually far from 100%, and hence this should motivate administrators to share their clusters to grid communities. However, exploiting these resources in computational grids is challenging and brings several problems. This paper presents a transparent resource allocation strategy to harness idle cluster resources aimed at executing grid applications. This novel approach does not make use of a formal allocation request to cluster resource managers. Moreover, it does not interfere with local cluster users, being non-intrusive, and hence motivating cluster administrators to publish their resources to grid communities. We present experimental results regarding the effects of the proposed strategy on the attendance time of both cluster and grid requests and we also analyze its effectiveness in clusters with different utilization rates
