Software defined radio (SDR) allows unprecedented levels of flexibility by transitioning the radio communication system from a rigid hardware platform to a more user-controlled software paradigm. However, it can still be time consuming to design and implement such SDRs as they typically require thorough knowledge of the operating environment and a careful tuning of the program. In this work, we describe a systems contribution and outline strategies on how to create a state-action based design in implementing the CSMA/CA/ACK MAC layer in MATLAB (R) that runs on the USRP (R) platform, a commonly used SDR. Our design allows optimal selection of the parameters so that all operations remain functionally compliant with the ieee 802.11b standard (1Mbps specification). The code base of the system is enabled through the Communications System Toolbox (TM) and incorporates channel sensing and exponential random back-off for contention resolution. The current work provides a testbed to experiment with and enables creation of new MAC protocols starting from the fundamental ieee 802.11b compliant standard. Our system design approach guarantees the consistent performance of the bi-directional link and we include the experimental results for the three node system to demonstrate the robustness of the MAC layer in mitigating packet collisions and enforcing fairness among nodes.

Ambient Noise Seismic Imaging (ANSI) is a recently developed geophysical methodology to image the shallow subsurface structures of earth using ambient/environment noise as the source. Integrating ANSI computing within distributed sensor networks will enable real-time continuous monitoring of subsurface dynamics for sustainability studies. However, the research challenges associated with this innovative approach are significant. Traditional data collection using sensor networks imposes practical difficulty for real-time applications, because of the sheer amount of data and large-dense sensor arrays versus limited network bandwidth. This paper is the first to investigate how to utilize the computing capabilities of sensor nodes to perform the computation of ANSI under resource constraints. We explored two distributed approaches (aggregation and consensus) for computing ambient noise eikonal tomography and obtaining phase velocity maps. We performed experiments using CORE emulator to obtain phase velocity maps on real data from USArray Transportable Array. Results demonstrate that our approaches can illuminate phase velocities under network constraints. We also show that the proposed aggregation and consensus algorithms not only balance the computation load but also achieve low communication cost and high data loss tolerance.

Recently, there is an increasing trend of research in leveraging Wi-Fi signatures for various applications. This paper investigates the feasibility of effective Wi-Fi signals coverage in the case of collapsed structures. The objectives of this paper are to first identify the possible collapsed structure environments and then to compute the effective distance coverage for license free ISM bands signals to have maximum coverage. This scheme discusses Wi-Fi signals behavior at three different frequencies i.e., 5GHz, 2.4GHz and 900MHz which is also termed as Wi-Fi Halow. We have employed modified path loss model termed as PLCollapsed for proper reception of echo that estimates the coverage range based on path losses encountered to Wi-Fi signal in these collapsed environments. The objectives have been achieved through proper simulations with different attenuation factors based on complexity of collapsed structure and are compared for aforementioned frequencies. Comparison of simulation results shows that Wi-Fi halow outperforms other frequencies and can be very effective for post-disaster rescue while replacing the traditional Doppler radar techniques hence paving way for more ubiquitous systems.

Virtualization plays a pivotal role in the success of cloud computing service models and is applied extensively in modern public and private data centers. However, its adoption on end user devices such as laptop/desktop computers and cell phones is relatively scarce, mainly because convincing use cases for client device virtualization have proven elusive so far. As smartphones emerge as the linchpin of everyday computing and communication for regular people and application download becomes a fact of life, the Bring Your Own Cloud (BYOD) problem, in which corporate employees connect their own smartphones to the corporate networks for office work, has put most enterprises in an unenvious position of making a difficult choice between corporate security and employee productivity. One effective solution to the BYOD problem is smartphone virtualization, which provides multiple virtual smartphones on a physical smartphone, and enables a user to use a highly secure but not so flexible virtual smartphone in the work environment and a less secure but more flexible virtual smartphone when outside the work environment. This paper describes the design and implementation of a comprehensive smartphone virtualization system called Brahma, which consists of a virtualized smartphone element and a virtual mobility infrastructure element, and presents the detailed evaluation results of the first Brahma prototype on a commercial smartphone.

We present a technique to identify transmission timing for ieee 802.15.4 based Wireless sensor Networks (WSNs) in the presence of WiFi interference. Our technique is based on modeling WiFi traffic with a Modulated Markov Poisson Process (MMPP) model in order to enable us to predict when WiFi transmissions take place and avoid them. We have evaluated the accuracy of our model in a small test-bed. Results are promising and suggest that our approach can increase the reliability of ieee802.15.4 transmissions.

Prior research has shown the potential of device-free WiFi sensing for human activity recognition. In this paper, we show for the first time WiFi signals can also be used to uniquely identify people. There is strong evidence that suggests that all humans have a unique gait. An individual's gait will thus create unique perturbations in the WiFi spectrum. We propose a system called WiFi-ID that analyses the channel state information to extract unique features that are representative of the walking style of that individual and thus allow us to uniquely identify that person. We implement WiFi-ID on commercial off-the-shelf devices. We conduct extensive experiments to demonstrate that our system can uniquely identify people with average accuracy of 93% to 77% from a group of 2 to 6 people, respectively. We envisage that this technology can find many applications in small office or smart home settings.

Human flow counting is a fundamental task in public space management. Counting flow correctly may help prevent overcrowding hazards and improve public safety. This study proposes an automated device-free flow counting system by exploiting radio frequency irregularity in a wireless sensor network. As people pass through the line-of-sight between transmitters and receivers, radio frequency transmission is disturbed and received signal strength indicator (RSSI) fluctuates at the receiving ends. Using RSSI fluctuation series, the system infers flow size without patrons' carrying any special devices. A wireless sensor network with HBE-Zigbex motes (ieee 802.15.4) is set up to conduct experiments. Besides the mean and standard deviation of RSSI fluctuation series, Fourier spectral features are also employed as predictors of a machine learning algorithm. Experimental results show that spectral features improve the prediction accuracy significantly. The proposed method thus provides an alternative solution for the flow counting problem in addition to other video based solutions.

Traditionally, achieving constructive interference (CI) required specialized timekeeping hardware. Recently, the ability and interest to employ CI distributedly at any time using groups of ordinary single antenna wireless sensor nodes have grown. In this paper, we investigate achieving CI on sensor nodes. We consider the commonly employed ieee 802.15.4 wireless standard, which uses a chip frequency of 1 MHz. This means signals need to be synchronized with an error below 0.5 microseconds to allow for CI. Hence, excellent clock synchronization between nodes as well as precise transmission timing are required. We implemented and tested a prototype addressing the implementation challenges of synchronizing the nodes' clocks up to a precision of a few hundred nanoseconds and of timing transmissions as accurately as possible. Our results show that, even after multiple minutes of sleep, our approach is able to achieve CI in over 30% of cases, in scenarios in which any influence from the capture effect can be ruled out. This leads to an increase in a packet's chance of arrival to 30-65%, compared to 0-30% when transmitting with either less synchrony or different data payload. Further, we find that 2 senders generally increase the signal power by 2-3 dB and can double the packet reception ratio of weak links.
