In the current protocol stack for Internet of Things in general and wireless sensor network in particular, many devices rely on the ContikiMAC protocol at their MAC layer. This protocol is widely used and enabled by default for several industrial environments and time sensitive monitoring and control applications. However, few work exists regarding the performance of this protocol because it lacks of an underlying theoretical model for analysing its performance. In this paper, we propose a novel approach relying on process mining technique that aims to obtain a Markov chain model for networks running the ContikiMAC protocol. In particular, we present a comprehensive specification of the protocol and a Markov chain model obtained through the analysis and instrumentation of its reference implementation. We used the obtained Markov chain to analyze and estimate the end to end delay distribution for a multi-hops transmission with static routing. The approach can also be extended to a wide range of protocols.

In this article, we rigorously compare compressive sampling (CS) to four state of the art, on-mote, lossy compression algorithms (K-run-length encoding (KRLE), lightweight temporal compression (LTC), wavelet quantization thresholding and run-length encoding (WQTR), and a low-pass filtered fast Fourier transform (FFT)). Specifically, we first simulate lossy compression on two real-world seismic data sets, and we then evaluate algorithm performance using implementations on real hardware. In terms of compression rates, recovered signal error, power consumption, and classification accuracy of a seismic event detection task (on decompressed signals), results show that CS performs comparable to (and in many cases better than) the other algorithms evaluated. The main benefit to users is that CS, a lightweight and non-adaptive compression technique, can guarantee a desired level of compression performance (and thus, radio usage and power consumption) without subjugating recovered signal quality. Our contribution is a novel and rigorous comparison of five state of the art, on-mote, lossy compression algorithms in simulation on real-world data sets and implemented on hardware.

Collection of the sensed data in a wireless sensor network at one or more sink(s) is a well studied problem and there are a lot of efficient solutions for a variety of wireless sensor network configurations and application requirements. These methods are often optimized towards collection of the sensed data at a predetermined base station or sink. This inherently reduces the agility of the wireless sensor network as the flow of information is not easily changeable after the establishment of the routing and data collection algorithms. This paper presents an efficient data dissemination method based on the compressed sensing theory that allows each sensor node to take the role of a sink. Agile sink selection is especially advantageous in scenarios where the sink or the end user of the wireless sensor network is mobile. The proposed method allows availing the global state of the environment by fetching a small set of data from any arbitrary node. Our evaluations prove the better performance of our technique over existing methods. Also a comparison with an oracle-based approach gives sufficient experimental evidences of a nearly optimal performance of our method.

The first wave of sensor network deployments from the early 2000s relied on aggregation-a strategy in which readings are combined locally using low-power radio links before they are communicated to the gateway. Aggregation reduced dependence on battery-draining, long-distance radio links, and reduced redundancy among reported data. We are now experiencing a second wave of sensor network research driven by ubiquitous smartphone usage. In this paper, we study the application of aggregation to the new smartphone sensor network setting, arguing that it can help reduce costs in contexts where existing cost-reduction strategies, such as opportunistic use of Wi-Fi and data piggybacking, do not apply. In more detail, we propose two new aggregation protocols, designed for the challenges of high mobility, that offer trade-offs in terms of bandwidth and energy savings. We then evaluate these protocols using both testbed experimentation (using a collection of 11 Samsung Galaxy Nexus smartphones running a NoiseTube-like application) and trace-based simulation (using a large collection of mobility traces from taxi cabs in Singapore). Our experiments demonstrate that our aggregation protocols reduce cellular bandwidth usage by up to 95% while losing less than 5% of the data. Moreover, in many common cases, our protocols also yield significant energy savings.

This article describes a method for indoor positioning of human-carried active Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tags based on the Sampling Importance Resampling (SIR) particle filtering algorithm. To use particle filtering methods, it is necessary to furnish statistical state transition and observation distributions. The state transition distribution is obstacle-aware and sampled from a precomputed accessibility map. The observation distribution is empirically determined by ground truth RSS measurements while moving the RFID tags along a known trajectory. From this data, we generate estimates of the sensor measurement distributions, grouped by distance, between the tag and sensor. A grid of 24 sensors is deployed in an office environment, measuring Received Signal Strength (RSS) from the tags, and a multithreaded program is written to implement the method. We discuss the accuracy of the method using a verification data set collected during a field-operational test.

Along with the widespread usage of mobile devices supporting multiple radio interfaces, users can connect to the mobile operator's network using different access technologies such as UMTS, WLAN and WiMAX/LTE. Depending on the network conditions and the QoS requirements of users, the usage of the right technology at the right time can provide more effective networking with higher data rate, lower cost, longer battery duration, and higher coverage area. To enable this networking effectiveness, a seamless handover mechanism to minimize service disruption is required. ieee 802.21, which defines a set of standards for media independent handover, is capable of realizing both horizontal and vertical handovers. In this paper, a new algorithm is proposed to provide energy efficient handovers among UMTS, WiMAX, and WLAN networks. The proposed algorithm is implemented within the ieee 802.21 framework and its performance analysis is performed using the ns-2.29 simulator. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm significantly increases the service duration and hence decreases packet losses by dynamically changing the video downloading rate according to handover decisions and the remaining battery power levels.

In this paper, we propose a "Neighbour Disjoint Multipath (NDM)" scheme that increases resilience against node or link failures in a wireless sensor network (WSN). Our algorithm chooses the shortest path between a sensor and the sink as the primary path, thus ensuring the algorithm is energy efficient under normal circumstances. In selecting the backup paths, we utilise the disjoint property to ensure that i) when there are k paths between source and sink, no set of k node failures can result in total communication break between them, and ii) by having (k - 1) spatially separated backup paths w.r.t. the primary path, the probability of simultaneous failure of the primary and backup paths is reduced in case of localised poor channel quality or node failures. Our algorithm not only ensures the node disjointedness characteristics of the constructed paths, but also tries to minimise the impact of localised node or link failures where a localised portion of the network may be unusable. We analyse the motivation behind our idea clearly, and discuss the algorithm in detail. We also compare the NDM scheme with other common multipath techniques such as node-disjoint and edge-disjoint approaches, and point out its effectiveness through simulation.

The routing stretch in a sensor network with a large hole can be controlled if the network nodes have certain information about the hole location and shape, possibly by using some mechanism for hole boundary approximation and information dissemination. Here, the nodes on the hole boundary cooperate to approximately compute the hole shape, and then a compact description info can be created and disseminated to the surrounding area. However, a finer approximation (for smaller stretch) leads to a higher cost of dissemination, which could unlikely be affordable for the sensors. We provide an insightful analysis to this fundamental trade-off of the hole approximation problem, using a geometric model. Based on this we discuss an efficient approximation-dissemination scheme using a natural, heuristic approximation technique. For reasonable conditions (network is dense enough apart from the hole), we assure that the routing stretch is under a predefined threshold. alpha > 1 while the dissemination cost is also under tight control. Our initial experiment results also confirm that our approach is significantly more efficient and economical, compared to existing proposals.

Emerging low-power radio triggering techniques for wireless motes are a promising approach to prolong the lifetime of Wireless sensor Networks (WSNs). By allowing nodes to activate their main transceiver only when data need to be transmitted or received, wake-up-enabled solutions virtually eliminate the need for idle listening, thus drastically reducing the energy toll of communication. In this paper we describe the design of a novel wake-up receiver architecture based on an innovative passband filter bank with high selectivity capability. The proposed concept, demonstrated by a prototype implementation, combines both frequency-domain and time-domain addressing space to allow selective addressing of nodes. To take advantage of the functionalities of the proposed receiver, as well as of energy-harvesting capabilities modern sensor nodes are equipped with, we present a novel wake-up-enabled harvesting-aware communication stack that supports both interest dissemination and convergecasting primitives. This stack builds on the ability of the proposed WuR to support dynamic address assignment, which is exploited to optimize system performance. Comparison against traditional WSN protocols shows that the proposed concept allows to optimize performance tradeoffs with respect to existing low-power communication stacks.
