Messages are considered to be a primary means of communication between agents in multi-agent systems. Since multi-agent systems are used for a wide variety of applications, it also includes applications like simulation and calculation of computer generated graphics which need to employ a large number of messages or very large messages. In addition, another set of applications target hardware which is resource constrained in either bandwidth or processing capacity. As a result, these applications have different requirements regarding their messages than other agent message formats. This paper proposes useful properties of agent messages and evaluates them with regard to different types of applications. Based on this evaluation a message format for Jadex called Jadex Binary is proposed which emphasizes properties which are not traditionally the focus of agent message formats and compare it to well-known formats based on those properties. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

In order to increase the number of agent applications in practical use, it is a given that we need to incease the rate at which problems are conceptualized and specified using MAS-based approaches. However, we must also address two other problems: moving from specification to actual implemented systems without programming from scratch, and the training of people to carry out such work. In this paper we examine four desiderata for practical development tools - a focus on programming as opposed to architecture;programming at the multi-agent level;"value-added" architectures;support for persistent, flexible, robust action. We also examine observed training shortfalls of graduate students attempting to implement technically complex multi-agent applications. These desiderata and observations are made in the context of DECAF, an MAS development toolkit developed at the University of Delaware and based on early versions of RETSINA.

This paper begins with the comparison of the message-sending mechanism, for communication among agents, and the method-invocation mechanism, for communication among objects. Then, we describe an extension of the method-invocation mechanism by introducing the notion of "sender" of a message, "state" of the interaction and "protocol" using the notion of "role", as it has been introduced in the powerJava extension of Java. The use of roles in communication is shown by means of an example of protocol. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2007.

Engineering component interactions is a major challenge in the development of large-scale, open systems. In the realm of multiagent system research, organizational abstractions have been proposed to overcome the complexity of this task. However, the gap between these modeling abstractions, and the constructs provided by todays agent-oriented software frameworks is still rather big. This paper reports on the RICA-J multiagent programming framework, which provides executable constructs for each of the organizational, ACL-based modeling abstractions of the RICA theory. Setting out from a components and connectors perspective on the elements of the RICA metamodel, their executions semantics is defined and instrumented on top of the JADE platform. Moreover, a systematic reuse approach to the engineering of interactions is put forward. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2006.

This paper proposes a dialogue game in which coherent conversational sequences at the speech act level are described of agents that become aware they have an irresolvable disagreement and settle the dispute by agreeing to disagree. A disagreement is irresolvable from an agent's perspective if the agent is aware that both parties have ran out of options to resolve the dispute, and that both parties are aware of this. A dialogue game is formulated in which agents can offer information that may unintentionally result in irreconcilable, mutually inconsistent belief states. Based on the agents' cognitive states, dialogue rules and cognitive rules are defined that allow agents to come to an agreement to disagree. These rules are implemented in the programming language Prolog, resulting in an intuitive design for multi-agent systems. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2005.

multi-agent systems are attractive means for developing complex software systems. However, multi-agent systems themselves tend to be complex, and certain difficulties exist in developing them. One of the difficulties is the gap between design and implementation especially for interaction protocols. In this paper, we propose a new interaction protocol description language called IOM/T. Inter-action protocols described using IOM/T have clear correspondence with AUML sequence diagrams and the description can be consolidated into a single unit of IOM/T code. Then, we show how the process of implementing Java-based agent-platform code from AUML design can be carried out, and how IOM/T effectively bridges the gap between design and implementation. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2005.

As agent systems become more sophisticated, there is a growing need for agent-oriented debugging, maintenance, and testing methods and tools. This paper presents the Tracing Method and accompanying Tracer tool to help debug agents by explaining actual agent behavior in the implemented system. The Tracing Method captures dynamic run-time data by logging actual agent behavior, creates modeled interpretations in terms of agent concepts (e.g. beliefs, goals, and intentions), and analyzes those models to gain insight into both the design and the implemented agent behavior. An implementation of the Tracing Method is the Tracer tool, which is demonstrated in a target-monitoring domain. The Tracer tool can help (1) determine if agent design specifications are correctly implemented and guide debugging efforts and (2) discover and examine motivations for agent behaviors such as beliefs, communications, and intentions. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2005.

This work analyses the problematic of debugging a multiagent system. It starts from the fact that MAS are a particular type of distributed systems in which the active entities are autonomous in the sense that behavior and knowledge of the whole system is distributed among agents. It situates the problem by firstly studying the classical approaches for conventional code debugging and also the techniques used in distributed systems in general. From this initial perspective, it tries to situate agent and multi-agent systems debugging. It finally proposes the use of conventional data mining tasks like clustering to, by summarising, help in debugging huge MAS. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2007.

The agent Conversation Reasoning Engine (ACRE) is intended to aid agent developers to improve the management and reliability of agent communication. To evaluate its effectiveness, a problem scenario was created that could be used to compare code written with and without the use of ACRE by groups of test subjects. This paper describes the requirements that the evaluation scenario was intended to meet and how these motivated the design of the problem. Two experiments were conducted with two separate sets of students and their solutions were analysed using a combination of simple objective metrics and subjective analysis. The analysis suggested that ACRE by default prevents some common problems arising that would limit the reliability and extensibility of conversation-handling code. As ACRE has to date been integrated only with the agent Factory multi agent framework, it was necessary to verify that the problems identified are not unique to that platform. Thus a comparison was made with best practice communication code written for the Jason platform, in order to demonstrate the wider applicability of a system such as ACRE. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

multiagent systems form a promising paradigm for software development in complex application domains, but unfortunately tend to be complex systems themselves. The existing gap between analysis and design of multiagent systems and their implementation leads to an increased programming effort. In this paper, we present a graphical tool which tries to bridge this gap by integrating the design and implementation of agent conversations. The tool is implemented, as a plugin, for the integrated development environment Eclipse. Its use follows a conversation programming workflow which supports agent UML and finite state machines as graphical notations. It is shown how the in-memory representation based on the description language cpXML, is automatically translated into source code for the multiagent framework JADE.
