This paper surveys the state-of-the-art in computer assisted real-time operation of water distribution systems. It first examines the reasons and justification for installing computer based control systems, then describes their components and operation. With any job, the correct tool can increase efficiency and speed of implementation and keep costs down. Personal computers are being used for process control applications because of their availability and low costs. Unfortunately, the number of man hours involved in implementation of a control system can easily exceed the cost of a prepackaged control system. The way to keep the costs down is to use the proper tools. This paper discusses the software tools available for process control on a personal computer. Array processors are being utilized in combination with microcomputers to provide high performance sophisticated processing for vision systems. Many manufacturers of vision systems have endeavored to build proprietary array processors because an off-the-shelf solution has not been available at a reasonable cost. The ZIP 3216 array processor has overcome the obstacles that have inhibited the widespread use in vision systems through hardware and software innovations. The architecture allows for easy integration of the array processor into almost any configuration and the software environment allows for easy customization of algorithms and efficient programming. Details of the programming environment will be discussed with emphasis on programming examples that eliminate the need for microprogramming the array processor. The features of the hardware design that allow for optimal speed and flexible integrating and upgrading capabilities will also be discussed.

On March 22, 1983 at a press conference in Los Angeles, Odetics, Inc. introduced ODEX I, a tetherless, six-legged walking machine built to demonstrate the company's base technology for intelligent machine systems. This engineering tool contains a number of state-of-the-art advances in robotic technologies, including patent-awarded mechanical designs and advanced physical design embodiments as well as unique on-board computer architecture and systemssoftware. Of equal significance is ODEX I's algorithm control for simultaneous, continuous path, closed loop trajectory management of six articulators (i. e. , legs) with a total of 18 degrees of freedom. This article discusses these new robotic capabilities and the emerging market demand for intelligent machine systems. The development and the architecture of ODEX I are also discussed.

A data acquisition system network is described which brings real-time data pertinent to the drilling operation from multiple offshore rigs into an oil company's main computer office in Anchorage Alaska. The system consists of remote computers on the drilling rigs connected to a main computer in Anchorage through a satellite communications system. The computers use standard network and data base software to move the data from the rigs to a data base in Anchorage for common access of various users in the main office. The computers output information to multiple terminals so that the data collected and stored by the system is accessible to multiple users. Graphic terminals are used so that data can be plotted in standard drilling formats for users. Other potential features as well as practical considerations of the system are described in the paper.

Many organizations designing printed wiring boards (PWBs) for military or commercial applications use interactive computer-aided design (CAD) systems. These systems primarily perform conductor routing and component placement routines. Various modifications of the basic programs enhance the efficient use of panel real estate, provide drill and router tapes, and perform analyses. However, none of these programs incorporate manufacturing/producibility (M/P) data for use by the engineer during the design cycle. Use of new software provides a good functional engineering design and higher fabrication yield. It has been demonstrated as a cost saving device and an excellent training tool for engineers inexperienced in PWB design and fabrication. The ideal blend of computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) has apparently been made by this software development.

Committee goals for 1984 were to complete a nationwide network analysis survey, begin a manual, and begin to focus on specific needs. The Survey Report is complete and available for distribution. Efforts are currently under way to develop a manual and to identify specific needs.
