We have demonstrated a high degree of automation in the engineering of complex machine vision systems, by building ten printed-text page readers, each specialized to a European language, at the pace of one language per week. The page readers provide these functions: page layout analysis, polyfont symbol recognition, typographical morphology, lexicon-driven contextual analysis, and Unicode output encoding. The accuracy and speed of the resulting readers are usably high, and can be easily improved if required by comparatively routine enhancements of subsystems. This exercise illustrates the advantages of a research strategy that emphasizes versatility before, but not at the expense of, accuracy and speed.

We propose a new and efficient scheme for broadcast encryption. A broadcast encryption system allows a broadcaster to send an encrypted message to a dynamically chosen subset RS, |RS|=n, of a given set of users, such that only users in this subset can decrypt the message. An important component of broadcast encryption schemes is revocation of users by the broadcaster, thereby updating the subset RS. Revocation may be either temporary, for a specific cipher text, or permanent. In the existing public key schemes which support temporary revocation of the users, the broadcaster is required to keep track of the revoked users. We present the first public key broadcast encryption scheme that supports permanent revocation of users. Unlike previous schemes, the broadcaster in our scheme should not keep track of the revoked users (saving memory and computation power). Our scheme is fully collusion-resistant. In other words, even if all the revoked users collude, the revoked user cannot encrypt messages without receiving new keys from the broadcaster. The procedure is based on Cipher-text Policy Attribute-Based Encryption (CP-ABE). The overhead of revocation in our system is constant in all major performance measures including length of private and public keys, computational complexity, user's storage space, and computational complexity of encryption and decryption. The scheme we construct improves on our original scheme in a poster presentation [7] by a factor of O(log n) in all major performance measures.

Babies aged 0-24 months are in a period of very rapid growth and development so they are often referred to as the golden age and critical period so that food and drink are the key to the growth and development process. Fulfilling the right nutritional needs in babies can prevent stunting where Indonesia is ranked fourth in Asia with the most cases. Stunting is a disease caused by a lack of protein and is characterized by a child's height that is below standard. One way to prevent stunting is by providing complementary foods (MP-ASI). Parental knowledge of the right MP-ASI nutritional needs can reduce the risk of stunting in babies. A website-based service system that accommodates MP-ASI information is designed so that it can be easily accessed by parents. The MP-ASI recommendation method is built using the Rule-Based Reasoning method, namely by calculating the number of daily calorie needs from the amount or frequency of MP-ASI given in a day. Through this website-based application, parents can easily obtain information about the right MP-ASI for babies.

New customers often require custom features of a successfully marketed product. As the number of variants grow, new challenges arise in the maintenance and evolution activities. software product line (SPL) architecture is a timely answer to these challenges. The SPL adoption however is a large one time investment that affects both technical and organizational issues. From the program code point of view, the extractive approach is appropriate when there are already several product variants. Analyzing the feature structure, the differences and commonalities of the variants lead to the new common architecture. In this work in progress paper we report initial experiments of feature extraction from a set of product variants written in the Magic fourth generation language (4GL). Since existing approaches are mostly designed for mainstream languages, we adapted and reused reverse engineering approaches to the 4GL environment. We followed a semi-automatic feature extraction method, where the higher level features are provided by domain experts. These features are then linked to the internal structure of Magic applications using a textual similarity (IR-based) method. We demonstrate the feasibility of 4GL feature extraction method and validate it on two variants of a real life logistical system each consisting of more than 2000 Magic programs.

The widespread deployment of ‘Smart’ Infrastructure, which uses networked computing systems to manage physical processes, has brought the onset of the fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR). The 4IR relies on network interconnectivity, sensing, automation, robotics, and artificial intelligence to improve the productivity of modern manufacturing environments while reducing their workforce needs. Although beneficial, this growing adoption of 4IR has increased the complexity of Industrial Control systems (ICS), creating a huge workforce skills gap and causing 2.1 million manufacturing jobs to go unfulfilled by 2030. In the context of these challenges, this paper presents Cyber-Physical systems Training Range (CPS-TR), a cloud-based scalable student training platform to address 4IR needs, especially cybersecurity. The CPS-TR, built on Amazon Web Services (AWS), allows instructors to create experimental scenarios using virtual machines in AWS’ Elastic Cloud (EC2), connected via AWS Virtual Private Cloud (VPC) based subnet providing an isolated communication environment. The CPSTR front-end provides a web application-based interface for students and instructors to design new material and perform experiments. This paper evaluates the performance and efficiency of the CPS-TR environment while showcasing an experiment teaching trainees about the safe use of the MQTT protocol from 4IR infrastructure software updates. The experimental evaluation shows that a trainee’s network traffic volume while using the CPS-TR peaks at 2000 packets in a second; the network bandwidth requirements of a basic network connection suited for usage with mobile and tablet devices. The experimental evaluation also shows the VPC subnet communication peaks at eight packets in a second, with a cumulative packet count of fewer than 70 packets. This low VPC subnet utilization is in combination with EC2 *** VMs allows the CPS-TR operation costs to stay low.

This paper proposes a scalable and efficient firmware-over-the-air (FOTA) updating architecture that reliably enables the simultaneous remote mass deployment of new firmware versions on Industry 4.0 machines. The architecture comprises remotely interconnected software and hardware sys-tems for providing firmware mass deployment employing Wi-Fi and LoRa technologies. A custom bootloader for Microchip 8-bit and 32-bit PIC microcontrollers has been developed to support remote FOTA operations. Cloud Web, Flutter mobile, and desktop applications are developed with a cloud server to provide remote FOTA operations. A simulation using cloud Web and Flutter mobile applications proves identical results according to the proposed architecture. Experimental work was performed on a Microchip PIC PIC18F4431 development board, and the results showed a significant match to the conducted simulation.

Over the past years a large amount of digital science education resources became available for open access through web-based repositories. These resources have the potential to support technology-enhanced science education by enabling science teachers to improve their day-to-day science teaching. Nevertheless, it has been identified that science teachers could benefit from their participation in communities of best science teaching practices by sharing, not only digital educational resources, but also learning designs that represent their pedagogical practice. This hasled to efforts on moving beyond web-based repositories of digital educational resources towards the development of web-based repositories of learning designs. Within this framework, the aim of this paper is to provide an overview of three (3) European initiatives, which aim to support and facilitate open access to Educational Resources and Learning Designs in the field of Science Education, namely, the Open Science Resources Repository, the COSMOS Repository and the PATHWAY Coordination and Support Action.

We introduce CyberProf, a robust software package which utilizes the full capabilities of a World Wide Web server as an intelligent human-computer interface for grading, creating, and presenting educational course materials. Students can solve course problems presented with text, graphics, animations, and sound on the Web and can receive instant feedback from a sophisticated grading package which makes use of the latest complex systems data analysis tools to handle ambiguous input in an intelligent manner. Fully integrated lecture notes and help files are hyperlinked to assist the student in solving an exercise. Instructors can make use of built-in problem set and lecture notes editors to create an entire online course customized for their needs. Early results of the system are promising. In the first university course in which CyberProf was used, class attendance rates were significantly higher, dropout rates were lower, and grade distributions were higher when compared to figures from the same course in previous semesters.

Design and analysis of physical protection systems requires (1) identification of mission critical assets, (2) identification of potential threats that might undermine mission capability; (3) identification of the consequences of loss of mission-critical assets (e.g., time and cost to recover required capability and impact on operational readiness), and (4) analysis of the effectiveness of physical protection elements. CPA (cost and performance analysis) addresses the fourth of these four issues. CPA is a methodology that joins activity based cost estimation with performance-based analysis of physical protection systems. CPA offers system managers an approach that supports both tactical decision making and strategic planning. Current exploratory applications of the CPA methodology address analysis of alternative conceptual designs. Hypothetical data is used to illustrate this process.

Resonant converters and related systems, such as piezoelectric transformers, may require a high-resolution frequency drive when the quality factor of the network is high or to avoid limit cycle oscillations. This high frequency resolution requirement could be beyond the capabilities of low cost microcontrollers. To remedy this problem, a frequency resolution enhancement algorithm was developed, tested by simulations and verified experimentally. The proposed approach is based on a modification of the fractional-N dithering concept and includes an adaptive dithering period and smooth DPWM frequency transitions. The implementation of the approach on the digital hardware is simple and requires modest additional workload from the CPU. Theoretical analysis was carried out to model the proposed dithering method when applied to drive resonant network in order to identify the causes and to quantify the expected output signal distortion when the signal is used to drive resonant networks. The proposed approach was tested experimentally on two types of resonant converters: a series-resonant parallel-loaded converter and a piezoelectric transformer. It was found that the output signal distortion is less than 1% of the peak amplitude of the output drive which would be acceptable in many applications. The experimental results were found to be in excellent agreement with the theoretical predictions, validating the usefulness of the dithering method as a frequency resolution enhancer for resonant network drive.
