In the past years, efforts in surveillance and open space analysis have focused on traditional computer vision problems like scene modeling or object detection and tracking. Research on human behavior recognition have tended to work on predefined simple activities such as running, jumping or left luggage, and single-person trajectory analysis. The goal of the workshop is to bring together experts and researchers from different fields to share their experience and expertise about the opportunities on the development of tools for automated social analysis in open and public spaces. humans exhibit a rich range of behaviors, from their interaction with the environment such as how groups of people occupy the space or how they manipulate or use objects within it, to the way they communicate with each other. Such behaviors can be captured from multiple sensors. Automatically interpreting interactive behavior provides a richer foundation for ambient intelligent environments.

Tracking the articulated human body has been a difficult research because body poses change so dynamic and vary in visual appearance. Pictorial Structures (PS) with dynamic programming (particle filtering) has been widely used for tracking human body, which is highly articulated and moves dynamically. In this paper, we use PS and a particle filter for upper body tracking. However, a Markov-process-based dynamic motion model for particle filtering cannot adequately predict the particles. We propose a key-pose-based proposal distribution that uses similarities between the input silhouette image and the key poses to effectively predict the particles. We select relatively few example poses from the pose space as key poses, train for embedded features, and formulate the proposal distribution with key pose similarities and a Markov-process-based dynamic model. We experimentally evaluate our proposal method and an observation model and test gesture recognition for human-robot interaction. © 2011 IEEE.

Natural user interfaces by means of gesture and speech interaction have become a hot topic in research as well as already for real products. Most use cases currently center around consumer electronics devices like smart phones, TV sets, gaming, or other large screens like tabletops. Motivated by the latest results in those areas, our vision is to apply natural user interfaces like gesture and speech interaction to the automotive domain as well. This integration might on one hand reduce driver distraction in certain cases and on the other hand allow to design new experiences for operating infotainment and entertainment systems. The goal of this workshop is to explore the design space of natural multi-modal automotive user interfaces. We would like to analyze where and how new interaction techniques can be integrated into the car. Copyright © 2011 ACM.

This paper implements a real-time hand gesture recognition algorithm based on the inexpensive Kinect sensor. The use of a depth sensor allows for complex 3D gestures where the system is robust to disturbing objects or persons in the background. A Haarlet-based hand gesture recognition system is implemented to detect hand gestures in any orientation, and more in particular pointing gestures while extracting the 3D pointing direction. The system is integrated on an interactive robot (based on ROS), allowing for real-time hand gesture interaction with the robot. Pointing gestures are translated into goals for the robot, telling him where to go. A demo scenario is presented where the robot looks for persons to interact with, asks for directions, and then detects a 3D pointing direction. The robot then explores his vicinity in the given direction and looks for a new person to interact with. © 2011 IEEE.

We present AirTouch, a new vision-based interaction system. AirTouch uses computer vision techniques to extend commonly used interaction metaphors, such as multitouch screens, yet removes any need to physically touch the display. The user interacts with a virtual plane that rests in between the user and the display. On this plane, hands and fingers are tracked and gestures are recognized in a manner similar to a multitouch surface. Many of the other vision and gesture-based human-computer interaction systems presented in the literature have been limited by requirements that users do not leave the frame or do not perform gestures accidentally, as well as by cost or specialized equipment. AirTouch does not suffer from these drawbacks. Instead, it is robust, easy to use, builds on a familiar interaction paradigm, and can be implemented using a single camera with off-the-shelf equipment such as a webcam-enabled laptop. In order to maintain usability and accessibility while minimizing cost, we present a set of basic AirTouch guidelines. We have developed two interfaces using these guidelines-one for general computer interaction, and one for searching an image database. We present the workings of these systems along with observational results regarding their usability.

Three underwater remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) were used over a five day period to inspect critical infrastructure and to assist with victim search and recovery at six sites in the Iwate Prefecture following the Tohoku Earthquake and Tsunami. Unmanned marine vehicles have been used since 2004 for disaster recovery operations but in limited applications, in single areas, and in short deployment durations. The joint IRS-CRASAR deployment matched robots for missions specified by civilian municipalities and the Japanese Coast Guard. The ROVs successfully allowed a fishing port to be re-opened and searched for victims trapped underwater in five different locations in varying areas (marinas, bridge debris, and waterfront residential areas) that could not be searched by manual divers. From a scientific perspective, the deployment provides a corpus of 15 hours of data of how rescue robots can be used. It illustrates that rescue robots are i) valuable for both economic and victim recovery, not just response, ii) that disaster robots need to be optimized for the unique missions and stakeholder needs, and iii) that human-robot interaction remains a challenge. This paper also identifies new areas for research: computer vision and cognitive engineering, cyber-physical systems, heterogeneous multi-robot coordination, human-robot interaction, simulation and geographical information systems.

We describe a group of concepts that facilitate reading of multi-modality breast imaging data in a single workplace and discuss their use and limitations. Our concepts comprise intelligent preprocessing, spatial referencing and dedicated workflow tools and aim at homogenizing and simplifying the multi-modality workplace, at improving the standardization across modalities and vendors, at supporting cross-modality information linkage, and at reducing required user interaction and waiting times, all at a high level of flexibility for the user to access the available imaging information at any time required. As a result, many situations where information from multiple modalities and time points must be assessed, both qualitatively and quantitatively, are expected to be handled more efficiently and reliably.

Using free software tools for design and art practice is increasingly common in our time. The approach to creative activities has changed significantly because of the increasing affordability of technologies for processing contents in digital format and the free distribution and development of such tools. Added to this, the massive use of mobile phones and its potential for generation and distribution of content, let any person to share digital information through mass media or in more private *** proposal presented in this article is an interactive installation entitled entre-abierto (half-open), which aims to create an audiovisual composition with the participation of the spectators. The visual content comes from the people who get close to the installation and choose to share pictures they have in their cell phone. These contents are manipulated by rules or algorithms of the digital medium. Besides the possibility to send pictures from the cell phone via Bluetooth, the viewer has some control over what they see and hear, with his presence and movement transforms the visual *** this article it will be a description of the installation and how various technologies have been applied in the creative process, and some of its possibilities in other applications.
