In this article, MEMS-based logic gates such as OR, AND, NOT, NOR, and NAND gates with functionalities similar to the electronic digital devices are designed and simulated. The key feature of these logic devices is that the mechanical cantilever structure of the basic piezo-actuator is adapted to operate like a particular digital logic gate based on the digital inputs. Complete analytical modelling for a single piezo-actuator with a correlation between its out-of-plane tip deflection with applied voltage is obtained. The proposed digital logic devices are further validated through simulation using the MEMS CAD tool CoventorWare.

The paper deals with modelling of UAS flight paths in the real operating environment of UNFICYP peacekeeping mission. The aim of the model is to optimize the flight paths of both one UAS and group of UAS in order to increase the effectiveness of monitoring and surveillance of defined area of responsibility while respecting the mandate, real spatial conditions, operational requirements and restrictions of UNFICYP. In the paper applied model transforms stabilization tactical activity monitoring and surveillance into the problem of planning UAS flight paths in a graph created from path points distributed in a defined AOR. The article consists of four chapters. The first two chapters formulate a research problem, illustrate the applied research methodology, identify and evaluate current negative areas of the subject of research and point out the causes and consequences of this status. The next two chapters represent the main scientific and experimental part of the paper. Attention is paid to defining criteria and operational requirements for UAS, and the final chapter presents modelling.

Autonomous systems are increasingly used for military tasks. Military autonomous systems, and specifically land-based systems, require a good understanding of the terrain to be able to navigate a complex and fast-changing environment. It is therefore essential to understand the state of the art in modelling and reasoning on terrain elements for autonomous systems in a defence context. In this article we present a first review of research that addresses this topic. The collected literature can be divided into three process stages: Sensing, World modelling and Reasoning. The state of the art is described in a compilation of 37 sources of literature divided into the mentioned process stages. In total we identified 7 articles on Sensing, 20 on World modelling, 16 on Reasoning. We observed that many military applications focus on the aerial domain, including the manoeuvring and optimisation of UAVs for military tasks. Heuristic methods such as Monte Carlo methods and evolutionary computing are often employed and applied to the vehicle routing problem. These approaches have also been extensively applied to land warfare research, but have only been applied sparsely to sea warfare. The analysis of the 37 articles reveals a clear preference for heuristic methods, followed by Vehicle Routing Problem (VRP) techniques and machine learning approaches. Less frequently employed methods are graph algorithms, imitation learning, and reinforcement learning.

The present paper introduces a new concept in the field of vehicle electrification, referring not to a cargo or passenger one but to a funicular. The latter's operation is normally based on an internal combustion diesel engine. In order to align such an application with the current trends in field of electrification, a project was developed to develop a hybrid solution. The requirements were based on the philosophy that during its operation, the funicular can recover a large quantity of energy during log's downhill, as the system actually must operate as brake. Studies were engaged when decisioning on the chemistry, Li ion or Lead Acid. The latter one handshake well with operating cycles of a funicular as well as low temperature exposure in forest has less impact on the battery performances. Even more, safety-wise, the Lead Acid cells are not susceptible for fire in case of faults, that is mandatory regulation in forest exploitations. To design and study this system, a complex simulation environment had to be developed, mixing Simcenter Amesim software (for the mechanics) with MATLAB Simulink (for the batteries). Nevertheless, precise battery parameters identification and modelling required processes that are detailed in the paper.

Modern Space Launch Vehicles (SLVs), being slender in shape and due to the use of lightweight materials, are generally flexible in nature. This structural flexibility, when coupled with sensor and actuator dynamics, can adversely affect the control of SLV, which may lead to vehicle instability and, in the worst-case scenario, to structural failure. This work focuses on modelling and simulation of rigid and flexible dynamics of an SLV and its interactions with the control system. SpaceX's Falcon 9 has been selected for this study. The flexible modes are calculated using modal analysis in Ansys. High-fidelity nonlinear simulation is developed which incorporates the flexible modes and their interactions with rigid degrees of freedom. Moreover, linearized models are developed for flexible body dynamics, over the complete trajectory until the first stage's separation. Using classical control methods, attitude controllers, that keep the SLV on its desired trajectory, are developed, and multiple filters are designed to suppress the interactions of flexible dynamics. The designed controllers along with filters are implemented in the nonlinear simulation. Furthermore, to demonstrate the robustness of designed controllers, Monte-Carlo simulations are carried out and results are presented.
