Internet applications let people around the globe work together, entering and leaving collaborations on their own schedules;even multitasking between several projects at once. However, this flexibility and the lack of real-world awareness cues make it more difficult for users to keep track of what they and others are doing and have done during each collaborative session. This paper describes our application of session history and multi-user awareness tools to reduce the cognitive load. We introduce a session history model for collaborative systems and a history management framework implemented in a web-based collaborative multi-user visualization system. Collaborating users see color-coded and annotated histories of their own and others' actions, which are recorded in a history database and visualized with a variety of tools. For privacy, and to reduce information overload, users choose when to make their actions public or explore privately, sharing only edited "storyboards" that bring other users through selected states of their exploration.

We develop a general approach that uses holomorphic 1-forms to parameterize anatomical surfaces with complex (possibly branching) topology. Rather than evolve the surface geometry to a plane or sphere, we instead use the fact that all orientable surfaces are Riemann surfaces and admit conformal structures, which induce special curvilinear coordinate systems on the surfaces. We can then automatically partition the surface using a critical graph that connects zero points in the conformal structure on the surface. The trajectories of iso-parametric curves canonically partition a surface into patches. Each of these patches is either a topological disk or a cylinder and can be conformally mapped to a parallelogram by integrating a holomorphic 1-form defined on the surface. The resulting surface subdivision and the parameterizations of the components are intrinsic and stable. To illustrate the technique, we computed conformai structures for several types of anatomical surfaces in MRI scans of the brain, including the cortex, hippocampus, and lateral ventricles. We found that the resulting parameterizations were consistent across subjects, even for branching structures such as the ventricles, which are otherwise difficult to parameterize. Compared with other variational approaches based on surface inflation, our technique works on surfaces with arbitrary complexity while guaranteeing minimal distortion in the parameterization. It also generates grids on surfaces for PDE-based signal processing.

In this paper, we propose an algorithm for automatic facial synthesis of a 3D face from a single frontal image. A 3D wire frame face model has been developed by using 2758 triangular surfaces. Complex Wavelet Transform (CWT) based facial feature detection procedure has been employed to automatically locate 20 facial feature points. The automatically detected features are used to map the face image onto the 3D face model. During the mapping process the 3D face model adapts itself to the facial feature locations of the individual. The quality of the generated 3D faces has been evaluated by using qualitative and quantitative measures. Peak Signal to Noise Ratio (PSNR) and Mean Observer Score (MOS) metrics are used to indicate the quality of the synthesized 3D faces.

The paper deals with visualization of multiple datasets by exploiting data coherency among the datasets under consideration to address the issues related to storage and computation. The proposed data coherency approach utilizes the similarities among datasets by using the already generated polygon data for one or more reference datasets to approximate the isosurfaces of similar regions in other datasets. For finding the similarity among the multiple datasets, we use the octree data structure and compare datasets block by block. Blocks of a nonreference dataset, whose difference from the corresponding blocks of the reference dataset is within the user defined tolerance level, we use the already extracted polygon data for the reference data blocks to approximate the isosurfaces. Thus, only those non-reference data blocks, which differ from the reference blocks, are processed. Thereby, we reduce the number of polygons to represent the isosurfaces. To overcome the problem of cracks in thus extracted isosurfaces, we use a simple approach of overlapping at the interface between the directly processed and approximated portions of the isosurfaces. We have explored the effects of various factors including the data coherency condition, tolerance level and block size on the performance. Our results show that the proposed data coherency technique considerably improves the overall performance.

Significant amount of research has already being carried out towards providing practical solutions to automatic road sign detection. Due to the prominence played by colour, an obvious first step of an automatic road sign detection algorithm is colour based segmentation of regions of interest suspected to be road signs. A number of colour spaces have been utilized for this purpose. However due to the variations of colour as a result of illumination changes, bad weather conditions and fading due to exposure to sun-light, makes the threshold selection problem in any colour space a significant challenge. Our literature review revealed that no previous work has been carried out to extensively investigate the robustness of threshold selection, when using different colour spaces in road sign detection. Rather the threshold values have been merely stated and used. In this paper we investigate the use of six colour spaces, specifically recommending the threshold ranges that can be used to robustly segment road signs under different lighting and weather conditions. This work is expected to provide valuable data for further research into robust, automatic road sign detection.

This article describes all the steps, methodologies and algorithms used for the development of a biometric system based on a hybrid facial identification technique. The technique used is based on two different algorithms of face identification, working in parallel. One uses facial features localization, in order to compute a vector with 20 characteristics, extracted from an initial image. The other uses a much known holistic process usually called principal components analysis (PCA), in order to represent an image on a reduced dimension space. Due to this dichotomy we consider this a hybrid system. We use these two techniques on an independent way until the final decision. This biometric system starts when it receives a facial image of an individual, and the purpose is to identify it from an image database. Resuming, this article explains all the steps followed to build this system, as well as the theoretical principals that support them.

For tracking head motions from a sequence of video images, segmentation of faces usually takes place first to locate head positions. Although a plethora of methods have been developed to segment faces, each approach has its own advantages and disadvantages depending on the properties of collected video clips, especially under low luminance level (i.e. lower than 10 cd/m 2). This study extends a traditional approach based on skin colour to segment faces, and has arrived at a mixed-colour-space algorithm, which takes viewing illumination and post position into consideration and shows very promising segmentation results with fewer false regions. The procedure includes obtaining colour attributes that are selected from varying colour spaces/models in order to detect the regions of interest (ROIs), which maximises the characteristics of faces. Colour edges are then applied to classify ROI into faces.

The outdoor service robot which we call OSR-01 is presently under development intending for cleaning up urban areas by means of collecting discarded trash such as PET bottles, cans, plastic bags and so on. We, in this paper, describe the architecture of OSR-01 consisting of hardwares such as sensors, a manipulator, driving wheels, etc. for searching for and picking up trash, and softwares such as fast pattern matching for identifying various trash and distance measurement for picking up via the manipulator. After describing the vision system in detail, which is one of the most critical parts of the trash collection task, we show the result of an open experiment in which OSR-01 collects plastic PET bottles on a real shopping street in the special zone for robot research and development in Kitakyushucity.

While we know quite a lot about emotional facial expressions, we know relatively little about the temporal development of dynamic expressions. In order to study expressions, most researchers have made use of acted, posed, or naturalistic expressions of emotion. However, objective manipulation of dynamic expressions for experimental study can prove difficult without disrupting perceptual quality or degrading natural movement. Another way to investigate the temporal configuration of dynamic expressions is to consider the subjective perspective of an animation practitioner. Few studies have considered the artistic representation of facial expressions, and how animators produce what they believe are authentic dynamic expressions. In this paper, the authors discuss a mixed performative-experimental approach to facial animation research, in which facial expression dynamics are manipulated artistically and the resulting animations are tested on observers.

The representation of a real scenario through a 3D virtual environment populated by autonomous agents has several applications, such as games or animation movies. Such representation can be a difficult and complex task, since natural scenarios are composed by forms with a lot of details that should be reproduced realistically in the virtual world. Moreover, virtual people should understand and consider the virtual world for navigation similarly to real people. In this paper we describe a model to provide motion of groups of characters based on terrain reasoning in 3D virtual worlds. The model starts with the terrain generation process using height maps in a pseudo-infinite world, followed by the simulation of characters movement generated through an space colonization algorithm. Finally, the visualization of characters motion in the 3D terrain can be produced.
